Patients ‘left without a blanket’
Monday 25th February 2008, 4:16PM GMT.
Overnight patients at a Black Country hospital’s Emergency Assessment Unit were left without pillows and blankets, it is claimed.
Patients kept overnight in the EAU at Dudley’s Russells Hall Hospital one night last week say they were left stunned when basic supplies like pillows and blankets were like gold-dust on the busy wing.
But bosses at the hospital today hit back saying there was no shortage of bed linen.
One patient, who did not want to be named, said he was left having to use a jacket as a blanket and make do without a pillow, despite repeatedly asking for one.
Other patients were reportedly left trying to search out their own because staff on the unit were too stretched. The patient said: “Having spent time in the EAU overnight I am very concerned at the lack of basic supplies like pillows and blankets.
“Patients were asking throughout the afternoon and evening for pillows and blankets, some got them and others didn’t. When we asked why, we were told there was not enough because it was not a ward.
“I had a very uncomfortable night as I know others did as well. When a lady opposite me was taken away in the morning she handed me her pillow and told me to hold onto it otherwise I wouldn’t get one, which I thought was very sad.
“The staff seemed very, very stretched and were doing the best job they could. If these supplies are available then they need to be made more easily accesible to the staff and patients.”
Associate nursing director Yvonne O’Connor said: “If a patient has experienced that then I am very sorry, but we have not got any issue on the EAU with shortage of bed linen. We have unlimited access to bed linen and things that are needed for patients.
“As with all hospitals we have even got above the level needed to deal with any unprecedented requirement for linen.”

I spent the night in EAU just before christmas… i asked for a blanket 4 tmes. in the end i called my wife to bring me a blanket.
When it arrived the nurse said i wasnt allowed to bring my own blanket for “health and safety reasons”. It was only then that i was provided a blanket.
shame that things haven’t improved

This situation occurred when my husband ill a while ago. He was uncomfortable and I asked for a pillow and was told there was a shortage of pillows. Absolutely disgraceful!

I HOPE THAT AT LEAST THIS STORY IS EXAGGERATED AS WE HAD A MEMBER OF THE FAMILY IN THERE LAST WEEK.
AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED FROM WHAT WAS SAID TO BE THE CASE THE SERVICE WAS SLOW BUT FRIENDLY AND EFFICIENT.I DON’T LIKE SYTEMATICALLY KICKING RUSSELLS HALL BECAUSE THERE ARE HARDWORKING PEOPLE IN THERE DOING A GREAT JOB (SEE I CAN BE NICE TOO !).

My husband had to be admitted to EAU in an ambulance 4 years ago. It was just as bad then.
No water to drink and ages to wait. It is just a dumping ground until a bed becomes available and the staff had bad attitude problems also.

I was in Wordsley Hospital in 2004 (before it was merged with Russells Hall) and they had pillow shortages at that time!

I work at another busy hospital in the West Mids. The problem is not a shortage of linen but a logistical problem of getting clean linen where you need it. Most patients who attend A&E get a pillow and blanket which stays with them for a certain amount of time. These will go to wards and not get returned, so each ward has lots of linen but A&E / admission units do not because they have all been used!

No surprise to me to see Russels Hall EAU get a slating again , I went with a family member recently and was met with probably the worst experience of negativeness and abuse from staff members I have ever seen , the hospital has posters all around the building warning staff about how to properly deal with situations rather than antagonise to pacify etc. yet the staff I have witnessed over the last 2 years have purposely caused numerous altercations to blow up into full scale warfare , last year I actually witnessed security and the police get called to a chap who had the audacity to ask for directions to another ward 2 minutes before visiting time and was told they wouldn’t help him until vsisting time , the chap was silly enough to use a deragatory remark about the unhelpful nurse and she called security …. he only wanted directions ..
