Only Villa matters to me: Gabby
Monday 25th February 2008, 9:54AM GMT.
Gabriel Agbonlahor insists only Villa – not speculation about next Saturday’s opponents Arsenal or England recognition – matters.
The lightning-quick striker made his comeback from injury yesterday at Reading, setting up Ashley Young for Villa’s first goal in their 2-1 win.
This weekend Villa take their European challenge to Arsenal, who were linked with a £15m swoop earlier this season.
But Agbonlahor is determined to focus purely on achieving success for Villa.
“It was brilliant to make the step up (to England). Everybody has been saying things about me all season, but I’ve just tried to concentrate on playing my game,” he said.
“I want to keep improving and I’ve worked hard to get to this point. The gaffer’s been great and never stopped encouraging me.
“I feel I’m a much better player this season and I’ve learned a lot and I’m delighted I made the England squad.
“I just hope I stay in it next time because the thought of joining up is a tremendous honour. But I won’t be taking that for granted.
“If the chance came, I’d take it. Who wouldn’t? But it’s not really on my mind.
“I just want to concentrate on playing for Villa. If I get the call again, great. If not, it’s nothing to worry about. I’ll leave it up to the manager.”
Of the Arsenal speculation, he said: “If I’m playing well week in, week out I’ll get other clubs looking at me. I think that’s a good thing for me.
“I’ve not heard anything about it, so I don’t think there’s anything in it. I’m staying here and concentrating on my football at Villa and keep scoring.
“I’ve heard about it but whatever’s said in the press, I’ll just concentrate on my game.”
Sixth-placed Villa are on the same points as Liverpool and Everton in fourth and fifth and Agbonlahor admits: “Our main aim has to be the top six. It would be a disappointment if we missed out again this season.
“What we’re building here will take time. But we’ve got every chance of getting into Europe this season.”
