Fire rips through pallet firm
Monday 25th February 2008, 11:44AM GMT.
Firefighters called to a burning tower of pallets had a shock when they chanced upon several dozen gas cylinders stored nearby which could have gone off “like a bomb.”
Thousands of gallons of water had to be used to cool the flames and around 30 canisters on Walsall Wood’s Maybrook Industrial Estate.
At least 10 fire engines and scores of firefighters from across Walsall, Wolverhampton and Sandwell were sent to tackle the blaze.
A 20ft pile of pallets, was well alight when the first crews arrived at around 5.30pm on Saturday.
Firefighters pumped water from the Rushall Canal to tackle the blaze. Bloxwich watch commander Dave Stringer said crews had to investigate the site to find out what hidden dangers there may be.
“It was a bit of a shock when we opened up a storage unit and found row after row of propane gas cylinders, probably about 30, in the middle of a blazing fire. They were sealed but had the potential to go off like a bomb,” he said.
Crews returned to the scene yesterday to ensure all burning embers were extinguished. The cause of the fire is believed to have been arson.

Dear Sir’s
With regard to the Pallet FIRE on Saturday.
I have got 5 pictures that are very good of the fire tacking hold and also after the fire had been extinuished. Plus a picture that was tacaken from afar where you can clearly see the flames and smoke above houses near by. From when the fire started shortly afterwards I went down having seen the flames above the houses and thick black smoke. I my self and A Friend felt the need to STOP all traffic entering the area where the Incedent was tacking place. On wich we diverted trafic out of the area for 50 minutes untill the Police were able to attend and for them to stop all trafic.Paul Saunders from Brownhills also would like to mention the other person who helped with diverting trafic Amanda Tappa {Mandy} thanks

In reply to the comment left by ‘Hannah’ on the 25/02/08, there is not really a Particular reason of the comment. only just being the Fact of the Fire being NEWS and some people who never came to the Scene of the fire may want to know what damge was caused by the mindles people who started the fire so near to a Children’s Play Centre. If the comment up set you then Hey ”I appologise!”

Paul, I’m sure that the newspaper articles would help with people being told the facts of the fire. Why your 50 minutes of diverting the traffic is going to help anyone know what damage was caused by the fire I’ll never know. But hey, I suppose you have your 15 mins of fame now. Also – for those people who “never came to the scene of the fire” I don’t blame you and am sure the emergency services appreciated you not being nosy and getting in the way.
