Albion 1 Hull 2 – report

bednar2.jpgWest Bromwich Albion 1 Hull City 2

Albion squandered more vital ground in the race to the Premier League as they slumped to defeat at the hands of play-off-chasing Hull.

The Baggies were caught with a sucker punch seven minutes from the end as big striker Caleb Folan struck with a goal on the counterattack.

Roman Bednar headed his 15th goal of the season to cancel out a spectacular strike from Hull’s Fraizer Campbell.

But it was three more points dropped for Tony Mowbray’s side, increasing fears of another end-of-season slide.

Only a fine piece of goalline defending by Leon Barnett prevented an earlier winner as the Baggies largely failed to discover a normal sharpness on the ball.

Albion took more than half an hour to truly get going by which time they were already a goal behind courtesy of Campbell’s brilliance combined with sloppy defending from the home side.

The on-line Manchester United youngster picked up a pass by Jay Jay Okocha and found himself unchallenged by the Baggies back four.

He accepted the invitation to shoot and whipped a fine right footed shot over the helpless Dean Kiely and into the top corner.

The opening goal finally sparked Albion into life and they played some good stuff immediately before half-time with Bednar drawing them level two minutes before the break.

He timed his run perfectly to meet a cross by Kevin Phillips and plant a header past Boaz Myhill.  Albion were pushing for a winner when Hull broke for the winner.

They found Folan who kept his composure to fire past Dean Kiely.

Sorry Mowbray, but you mucked it up today. Phillips playing wide right, then wide left 2nd half! Miller, a left-footer came on to find himself on the right. The game was crying out for Brunt, what with Hull compact in defence, and with us struggling to break then down, the ability of Brunt to ping them across the box might have made a difference. But then again, you had the two strikers hugging the touchlines!

This season seems to be repeating last. Last season we we’re top in january, had a good cup run, didn’t strenghten the squad where it needed, which was a def/midfielder and only made play offs (just). We we’re top in jan this year, didn’t bring in what we so desperately needed (good defender) and now look at us.
BRING IN BIG DAVE ON LOAN BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not doing the Wolves any favours are you. We need you to crush those above us and you ain’t doing it. tell your manager that it’s not fair to expect the attack to score three goals every week in order to compensate for a defence which seems rather suspect at the moment.

Forget about the cup. You should concentrate on the league and I don’t think you have the squad to compete for both.

And what if cup games bring you injuries. get real Tesco’s. you ain’t gonna win the cup and a loss at Wembley is no compensation for missing out of promotion.

TM is tinkering with the team too much….we won 5-0 at Cov and then its all change again for no reason..I personally dont like double substitutions , I think they imbalance the team too much , but when its both strikers then that is even worse…why take Bedner off too when he is the one who’s in such a rich vein of form..and why bring Moore on and put him on the left wing to replace Phillips (what he was doing out there is anyones guess )…when by his own admission TM reckons we have the best left footer in the league on the bench in Brunt..?…I dont think its time to panic just yet but it is a little worrying at how so few points we have from this bunch of home games…5 from the last 18 is it..?…I still think we’ll get automatic but only if he starts sticking with a settled side to a certain degree….the pack behind is now too close for comfort …COME ON YOU BAGGIE BOYS !!!!!!!!!

At the risk of sounding like Cpl Jones, DON’T PANIC. I never comment on a game like yesterdays until I’ve slept on it. Yes it wasn’t good, no it isn’t the end of the world. Plus points, not many, Luke Moore looked to have plenty to offer and I look forward to him starting a game and Roman had his usual excellent game. For the first goal Leon Barnett was inexplicably marking the same player as Hoefkens leaving the goalscorer open, I’m not castigating him for this, he’s still fairly inexperienced and did enough good things to make up for it. The second goal came from Gera being left one on one with Folan, we had four in the middle covering two forwards, one of these should have taken the responsibility to double up, Barnett was closest but where was Hoefkens?
I suddenly seem to be alone in thinking that Tony Mowbray hasn’t become a bad manager overnight. We’re having our bad run that every team seems to suffer, I’m sure he’ll sort it out. TM is trying a very brave experiment in this division (playing proper football) where ugly seems to rule, yesterdays game proved this . Hull reminded me very much of Bolton 8 years ago, no coincidence Phil Brown was the assistant there. Probably our worst game of the season as they dragged us into their world with a stream of long ball, niggling fouls and time wasting. I’m not knocking them they’re not here to allow us to run around them, it’s down to us to cope with these tactics. Every now and again one of these teams will beat a Man U or Arsenal but they will get beaten them 9 out of 10 by better football, at the moment we’re not good enough to do this.
I think the only teams with a chance of going up and having a chance of staying up are ourselves, Bristol R and Charlton. Both play football and both also struggle against the neanderthals.
I won’t react to the Wolves fans on here gloating, sooo predictable.
    KEEP THE FAITH.
PS. For all the other fogies like me, wasn’t it good seeing Graham Williams at half time. I remember as a lad sitting on the wall at the Smethwick End watching him play. Before whichever Dingle it is comes on and says “not another leg end,” no just a very good player and decent bloke. Oh b——s just as I’ve said I wasn’t going to react, I’ve done it before he’s even posted.

8 points from the last 8 games over a season would give us 46 points
4 less than the 50 recommended for safety from relegation. Good job we won a few more before Xmas.Another season of costly underachievent in prospect with maybe at most semi-final play offs. The midfield was always lightweight and lacked bite and as a result the back four always under pressure with a yawning gap berween them and the forwards. What does manager do in the Jan transfer window – loan another lightweight midfielder from Korea !!!!Mowbray is tactically naive if he thinks he will outscore teams in this competitive division. Entertaining losers will be the end result again with 100 goals scored so what.

Anyone fancy translating No.6 – they must speak some strange language up there in Hull!

Agree with most of No.11 RealBully, Tomo’s done a 1st rate job this season whatever happens between now & May, he did make a mistake IMO yesterday bringing Bednar off the most likely source of a goal or 2. But doesn’t everyone mess up from time to time?

For far too many periods we allowed ourselves to get bullyed into playing the game by Hulls style (up and at em, head tennis and hoofing it long) – thats no disrespect to city, who had a game plan, and worked it perfectly (their 1st goal was class finish & excellent pass & vision from Jay jay)but when we played it around on the deck we got in behind them and created good chances – we just didn’t do it enough!
I still think we’re having a good season and have a great chance of going up, we’ll win a good few of those remaining games, and most of the teams around us will start feeling the preasure in the run-in, so there will be a few twists & turns yet – Hold on tight to your seats!

Good post RB, No.11 and NO you aren’t the only one who still believes in ToMo. He’s human, will make occasional mistakes, but he can’t be blamed for a really poor Gera pass at the end which cost us a goal, nor for the wild Gera shot that cleared the bar from very close in. I AM getting worried about Kiely, he completely lost it in the incident that led to Barnett heading a bombshell of a shot over the bar. To No.14. Yes a few morons booed, but it was a few and they didn’t boo the manager. Now how does that compare with the mad ranting we’ve heard at your place and seen on here? One win and you’re orgasmic and anybodys. The boot will change over a few times between now and May.

Come on you Albion – hope you can get a win against Plymouth next weekend to keep our (and your) play-off hopes alive! If you lose at home (again) to Plymouth then I think you really need to start worrying about still being in the Championship next season. It goes to show that the ‘Arsenal of the division’ can play as much pretty football as they like but when it comes to grounding out important results when they need to (for example, just like the Wolves did yesterday) they often come up short. Oh well – at least you still have cup glory to go for!!

P.S – Look at what Spurs did today, you can play nice football and not concede lots of goals. With the right Manager!

    1. Too may high, long balls up to Phillips. He’s not great in the air and these balls went to waste. No wonder he drifted out to the wing.
    2. …but once there he looked one of the more effective players
3…so odd he was substituted. I also am not convinced that a double substitution on 70 minutes is ALWAYS the thing to do and on several occasions this season it has been disruptive.
    4. Have we now got too many attackers? Constant changes must be disruptive.
    5. Also amazed there is no move to strengthen the defence. Some of the defending is embarassing. Hull’s first goal carbon copy of those conceded against, Cardiff, Burnley etc. Defenders standing off giving a useful attacker time to strike.
    6. For the second league game in a row we seemed to run out of steam towards the end.

My bet. No promotion this year. FA semis.

Firstly, I can only echo Real Bully’s original posting on this thread so I won’t go into that.

Now enough is enough, If i made regular consistant mistakes at work I’d be sacked, when mistakes that i am seeing could cost in excess of £30m and they go unpunished…WHY????
i made comments before, but now i’ve lost the plot with him, Dean Kiely admittedly he was’nt at fault for either of the goals on Saturday, but everytime the guy steps out of his 6 yard box I’ve got my heart in my mouth, Saturday when he was keeping goal at the Smethwick End he managed to do the hard work and get himself into a position to clear the ball, then he decided to take another touch, Kiely your not a footballer do what you gotta do and get rid, Barnett saved his blushes on Saturday with a very brave header on the line.
IMO time for a change in goal, we get changes all over the pitch, but there is way too much loyalty to GK who constantly puts the defence under needless pressure.

Going back to Barnett, i’ve been critical of him also this season, but it seems if the young lad defends he’s awesome, Saturday was one of them occasions, when he tries to play football he’s pants.

Anyway Plymouth next week and it’s getting….no got to a point where we have a must win fixture coming up, the leaders are moving away albiet we still have a game in hand, and the chasing pack are not gonna go away.

I want Brunt on the left and Gera on the right, that is when i’ve seen us play best this season.
