Teens admit horse attack

Two teenagers this afternoon admitted attacking a horse which was left so brutally injured it had to be put down.
Maggie the Piebold mare was chased and butchered with a meat cleaver at Essington Hall Farm near Wolverhampton in April last year.
Today details of the attack were revealed at Stafford Magistrates Court.
The court heard the 19-year-old horse, owned by Davina Bowyer, was left with a five-inch-deep cut to her neck, a three-and-a-half-inch cut on her shoulder and her right leg was broken.
The mare’s rear-leg tendon was also severed by a blow which cut to the bone.
Matthew Corfield, aged 19, of Higgs Road, Wednesfield, pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal.
The court heard Corfield laughed as he inspected the 12-inch by five-inch blade for blood.
Alex Lister, 19, of Olinthus Avenue, Wednesfield, also admitted the charge. Lister and Corfield were due to stand trial today along with Anthony Hinsley, aged 19, of Ecclestone Road, Wednesfield, who had the case against him dropped.
Mr Paul Jenkins, defending Corfield, said he did not accept he was “solely or exclusively” to blame.
It was not a premeditated attack and Corfield had taken the cleaver with him to chop wood to make a fire for the five friends who were camping in Black Cat Wood, he added.
Chair of the bench John Britton warned Corfield he was facing custody.
Mr Ian Hodnett, for Lister, said he had tried but failed to film Corfield and another friend chasing the horse on his mobile phone.
He said Lister’s only other involvement was to chase Maggie around the paddock.
The teenagers will be sentenced on March 13.

I know these two. Have done for years and the photos sum them up. The attack wasn’t premeditated because the brain is disconnected from the soul…pardon what soul. As young MEN i.e. over the age of 18 there can be no excuse they are not children and should face and adults conviction.

When this story broke last year i was absolutely disgusted and ashamed that someone from the area is sick enough to think of an attack like this.
These boys are absolute scumbags and deserve to be punished for the crime they have commited regardless of age.

I think what they did was terrible. I have 3 horses 2 minutes away from that yard, and i feel for the owner who went through that terrible time. They do need locking up for a very long time!

That poor animal must have been terrified… Im not a god bod but I believe in the saying “an eye for an eye” and Im sure maggie’s owner would like to be the one dishing out the same treatment to those evil little b***ards!! I really hope that the person who will decide on the sentencing, will take a stand against animal cruelty and send out a message that we will NOT tolerate such horrific crimes. Please remember Community service is NOT a punishment and i certainly would not want these in my community, working or living

Truly EVIL. There is no remorse or shame on those faces. I dread to think what atrocities these boys are capable of committing in the rest of their lives. Let’s hope justice is done and they get a serious custodial sentence, not a slap on the wrist. What they have done is sickening beyond belief.

This act of cruelty was well thought through, otherwise, why would youths of this age be “camping” out in woods with a meat cleaver when the majority of lads that age are out in pubs and clubs?
They need to be sent to a boot camp, that would make them REALLY grow up and learn some respect!
This time next year, their offence will be well and truely buried, but for the owner, she has to carry this around with her for life, where is the justice in that?!

The time has finally arrived to teach the younger generations what the effects of this type of behaviour carry, ie, real punishment. Custodial sentencing with hard labour perhaps would be a start then name and shame on release so everyone knows what they have done.

I sincerely hope that the sentence reflects the suffering of the poor horse and her owner. A slap on the wrist isn’t indicated in a case like this.
It’s well known that people who abuse animals are likely to abuse people too.

Davina has served 10 months of despair, anguish and sorrow at losing her gorgeous mare, her sentance will go on and on!!!

It is difficult to put into words how I feel about this mindless act of violence, but it must be punished severely. There is no room in our society for the willful cruelty that has gone on in this case. Deliberate sadistic and mindless violence towards an innocent and helpless creature, who trusted humans and then that trust was abused. There can be no excuses for what has happened. Every action has a consequence and their actions were violent, pre-meditated and disgusting. They need to learn that what they have done is wrong and if they do not learn from that, then they should be eliminated from society.

I would like to think the punishment will reflect the dreadfully wicked and evil nature of this crime. Sadly, I doubt it will and that these thugs will be let off lightly.
Frankly, neither of those whose photographs have been published look as if they have too much between their ears – I think the devil must have nicked whatever was there.
I am so angry when I think of the suffering of that poor mare and of her very brave owner who has behaved with commendable courage and composure.

The punishment HAS to fit the crime! A much loved horse, owned since a baby and for many years after, was brutally attacked and left to die alone. Her owner has to carry that thought for as long as she lives. The maximum custodial sentence must be enforced! It wasn’t just an animal’s life cut short – her owner has to cope with those descriptive moments of her beloved horse’s last hours for the rest of her life.
Leniency doesn’t apply. The convicted should be incarcerated as they have shown no remorse.

Bless Davina, she has been through soo much, i hope the next few weeks go quickly and she sees justice. We are looking at the makings of another jamie bulger, so i hope they get this right. Murderers Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, David Berkowitz and Albert DeSalvo (The Boston Strangler) are just a few of the scumbags that engaged in animal cruelty and torture before moving on to human victims. Do the families of these evil beings not fear for the safety of themselves and those around them? The link between animal cruelty/murder is very real. Let’s hope this is recognised in sentencing so that these individuals are not allowed to roam free in search of their next victim, animal or human death is murder in my eyes.

if whoever is sentencing isn’t ‘into’ horses perhaps they could imagine their pet dog or cat being brutally killed in this way, or even their child, as that is how most horse owners feel about their horses – it may help them to give a ‘proper’ sentence!

Someone got it right here: “Brains disconnected from soul” I’d go as far to suggest that they actually HAVE no brain! Y’know what, though, all these comments are going to see these gimps treated as heroes amongst their (doubtless) similarly mentally challenged friends…we KNOW it’ll be some kind of “6 week community order” that they’ll get off with, but i truly hope they get an unimaginably harsh sentence. For once, let’s see justice served on these wicked wicked people. No living being deserves this sort of torture, and Maggie’s owner does not deserve the ongoing torture of knowing what happened to her horse. These people have murdered a member of Davina’s family, for that is how realy animal lovers view it.

The law is in truth an ass,they have got away with an appalling act of violence. To all who think “it’s only an animal ” would like to point out that it is believed by most that the violence done to animals is usually just the beggining & that such creatures ( the supposed humans ) go on to be just as cruel & violent to first children then adults. So we can look forward to seeing these obscenities again in future years.If they were animals they would be put down for their behaviour,as “humans”( using the term extremely loosely) they are allowed to get away with their crime.

These repellent youths should get a far heavier sentence than the law provides, for their acts constitute MURDER. The laws need changing in this regard. Let’s just hope the judge isn’t too soft in sentencing and hands down a very, very long sentence.

I know one of the lads who did this, his sister is a good friend of mine, i agree with all of you that this was hideous and i hope they get what they deserve, no animal should suffer like that just for their entertainment, it sickens me to think someone you know would do something like that, but i have to disagree about the parents being to blame, i know that the one lads parents are respectable people and they are good parents, the lads are old enough to know what they are doing is wrong so their parents cant be blamed, i hope the lads get what they deserve, my thoughts are with Davina.x

Does anyone know if it is possible for the judge who will do the sentencing to see these replies? Anything i could say has already been posted, my heart is broken and i didnt know Maggie so heaven only knows how Davina is feeling. Davina your dignity and courage throughout is to be commended, Maggie is waiting on rainbow bridge and you will see her again one day. RIP beautiful girl xx

There is no remorse in their faces, they will do this again – how will the person sentencing feel if next time it is a child. As has been said the connection has been well documented.
What they did was sick and depraved – not premeditated? So does that make it ok then? What rot – they had a weapon and they saw the opportunity to terrorise and fatally injure an innocent and beautiful animaland they took it. Those with them that let it happen are as bad. Maybe we should legalise hunting again, not with foxes though – with these nasty evil retards as the prey. Lets see how being chased for hours then attacked feels to them. I really dont agree with 80 “ME” that the parents are not responsible for this, they bought the boys up, were supposed to teach them right from wrong, they failed there BIG TIME!! Respectable people definatly dont bring up trash like these monsters!! he did was wrong and disgusting.
As a family we arnt proud or glad at whats
happened, and we are not to blame either,
no parent has control over the actions of their
kids 24-7 and we havent been brought up, in the way some
of you say, i dont go around killing animals as i love them
and hate cruelty. When your drunk and drugged up to
the eye balls people act out of character as im sure
some of you people have done in the past but this does not excuse
what happend.
Maybe he does deserve to go down for the crime but
dont blame a whole family for the actions of one.

First of all, Meldrew, whilst still not ideal, you cannot compare the killing of animals for euthanasia purposes or for food or for essential medical research (when done HUMANELY) equivalent to THIS! Anyone that does is lacking.
Secondly, noone can say that just because someone’s parents seem respectable they should not shoulder some blame. They are the most influential people on the SICKOS’ lives. This is the problem with society and parents shirking their premier responsibilities thus the world is a worse place.
Thirdly, whilst not equating it to murder of a human, there are not many crimes which come much above THIS! These men cannot ever be trusted now, its a slippery slope. What future have they? Shame on the lot of them.
As for Davina well I cannot imagine what she has been through and she has conducted herself remarkably. Maggie rest in peace.

Why are they not being locked up for carrying a meat cleaver on to the streets, okay woods, that could have been a child he’d have done that too, at least then something more would have been done. They deserve to be set upon by horse lovers everywhere!!

Complete lowlifes. i hope their sentences wipe off their smug faces although i sadly doubt this will happen. i cannot for the life of me understand the thought process of what can only be loosley dicribed as human beings. RIP Maggie.

What these boys have done is sick and disturbing. They must be put away for a long time. These are the people that turn to murdering people and letting them off will only see other animals or human lives taken. A long sentance will show the UK that animal attacks are taken seriously and prevent some others from doing the same.
If anyone did this to my horse it would destroy me, I really feel for the owner who must be distraught at this whole situation. my heart goes out to her x

I hope that whoever stands up in court to sentence these disgusting cruel and evil people will just keep in mind 1 thing.
It may be that we all come back on this earth as a lesser being than the fantastic human. I hope that anyone who is cruel to any form of life, will be returned as that animal.
If the judge is strong enough – and gives the sentence that will prevent these being cruel again – he would be an animal that would be saved from being attacked by people like this.
If the judge allows these scum bags to walk away from the pain and the cruelty – then the judge too should come back as an animal that will eventually have its future in the hands of people like this.
Think about it long and hard. Do they deserve to walk free again???

Lock them up forever, these people are sick and will do it again for pleasure.

Evil, sick and totally worthless scum! I hope they get the punishment they deserve but, sadly, I doubt it. Not usually a vigilante type but would make an exception in this instance! My deepest sympathy and respect to Davina for her dignity in suffering and RIP beautiful Maggie.
