Jez attacks McCarthy axe calls

Wednesday 20th February 2008, 1:45PM GMT.

moxey2.jpgChief Executive Jez Moxey has repeated his support for Mick McCarthy – and admitted he is “perplexed” by questions about the manager’s future.

Moxey spoke out in support of the Wolves boss after the team were denied an opportunity to strike a blow for McCarthy’s caused by last night’s Scunthorpe clash being postponed.

That sends Wolves down to one of the Championship season’s dramatic revival teams, Crystal Palace, on Saturday looking to re-ignite a campaign rocked by a fading promotion challenge and tame FA Cup exit.

But Moxey renewed his appeal for disgruntled Wolves fans to accept the major rebuilding job for which McCarthy was recruited in the summer 2006 was never going to be swiftly completed.

Asked if McCarthy’s job was safe Molineux’s senior office responded: “Absolutely. I get perplexed by the question to be honest.

“Mick McCarthy has been with us for 18 months, was outstanding and probably got the players to over-achieve last year in finishing fifth.

“We have great confidence in him and we have confidence in our team.”

Those comments stay firmly in line with Moxey’s steadfast position alongside the manager throughout this first crisis period of McCarthy’s regime.

He started the year dismissing speculation that owner Steve Morgan was already lining up a replacement and then, in a clear effort to take more of the heat out of growing criticism of the team’s performances, admitted the club would be content to wait another season for promotion.

And had last night’s match gone ahead, fans would have read of more support for the McCarthy regime from the CEo in his programme notes.

Despite a fresh outbreak of anger following the fifth round FA Cup defeat at Cardiff on Saturday, Moxey is resisting any change firmly in line with the “culture-change” Moxey trumpeted in the summer of 2006 after Glenn Hoddle’s only full season had failed to deliver promotion and the parachute payments from Wolves one Premiership campaign had run out.

But heightened expectations after last season’s run to the play-offs and the arrival of new owner Steve Morgan have triggered fresh demands from some fans for quicker progress.

But Moxey added: “And this is the first time we’ve had a really difficult patch with Mick in charge.

“He’s only been here 18 months and we are rebuilding a whole team so we’re very pleased with the work he’s doing – he has our full support and he knows that.

“If we all stick together great things can happen.”

I can only watch Wolves when we are on TV these days and that normally ends in deafeat, but I do read the forums and the papers and speak with others who go home and way. This is something Mr Moxey obviously doesn’t do, because if he did, he would not come out with a stupid comment like “I am perlexed by questions regarding MM position”any fan at any club would be asking him the same questions if their team turned out the same rubbish week in week out. He must also have no knowledge of the game to completely support a manager who favours certain players over better players and totally ignores our younger members of the squad. This is why you get these questions and will continue to get them until we either improve dramatically on the pitch or you and MM find yourselves walking down the waterloo road away from the Mol. wandering “was it something we said”

I must be honest i think McCarthy is a great manager and he’s achieved good things at the club but seeing him not spend much in the tranfer window to bring talent to wolves, we are now seeing clubs i.e (burnley, plymouth and ipswich) all teams that have a lower rep then wolves over take us. To be fair i think McCarthy has achieved all he can at the club now and give a fresh and new look manager i.e (Paul Ince) ago! anyone agree? im wolves till i die and il follow where ever they go but we need change. Have to agree that some of our performances this season has been poor, and we have lacked any drive or creativity.
As painfull at our current situation is I dont think this is the time for another change of boss. Moxley and morgan if you beleive that MM is the right man, keep on backing him and hopefully he’ll will turn it round. The recents signing have a lot of potential and i think they will bring something to the table.
MM must play Eastwood and drop unacheivers like bothroyd, elliot, ward, potter.

Im fed up up of hearing mm and moxey bang on about 18 months ago mm came in with a depleated sqaud and we were favorates for relegation.
I believe mm did a great job last season with the resourses available to him. But that was last year,He can’t continue to live off last season!
This season we all expected progress in mm rebuilding of the team. It has not happened, i believe we have gone backwards.
Who is to blame?? It has got to be mm. He selects the players we buy and he picks the team.
These are the players mm has bought in since he arrived at wolves.
    Breen,D ward,N collins,K foley,gray,Elokobi,Henry,potter,kightly,S ward,gibson,keogh,bothroyd,eastwood,kyle,jarvis,ebanks blake,elliot,edwards,mcindoe,j johnson,j clapham,stack.
Thats 23 players he has brought to mol in 18 months, 3 of which he has since released.
Out of the 23 i believe there is only Kightly, jarvis & Foley who have been a success.
Some would argue keogh has been a success, but we paid £600,000 for a striker who has scored approx 10 goals in approx 60 odd games.
Eadstwood i believe has been badly treated by mm, started well scoring 4 in 5 and then gets dropped by mm.
Ebanks blake, edwards & elokobi im undecided about as we’ve not seen enough of them.
Players like breen & clapham and gray have i suppose served their purpose of experienced players who were brought in to boost sqaud numbers. Breen & gray were good players in their day but due to their age i believe their found wanting at times.
So when i hear moxey and mm say their rebuilding from 18 months ago when we had 12 players, i get infuriated when you see mm has signed 23 players and only 3 of them in my opinion have been a success. The majority of the rest are just not good enough.
When you have players like Davies,Gobern,Gleeson,D jones,M little,Rosa in the reserves and or sent out on loan when they should be in the 1st team sqaud instead of mm’s drivel that says to me the manager is clueless and has taken us backwards.
We play crap football, have no bottle in the team,no creativity,no leaders and a manager who simply is clueless.
Too Highlight that final point he Brings in a striker who can’t get in coventry’s 1st team and puts him straight into our first team and is obviously crap. Then you hear mm say how excellant he has played when everybody else can see how poor he was.
So i don’t believe we’ve progressed and it’s intresting how it is moxey who always comments on mm not morgan. I’ve never heard morgan come out and say he is right behind mm since early in the season.

As for criticising Morgan for not being vocal, this is exactly what he said he would be like when he completed the takeover.

The real problem IMO is the expectation, look what happened when we didn’t have any.

The irony is that Mick is “paying for the sins of our fathers”. Wise words Glen…you made it happen.

Hoddle left such a mess that Moxey didn’t want the prospect of a complete rebuilding process again, hence the 3 year+ policy.

Its unfortunate however that after all the good managers we hastily got rid, the policy is now set in stone that the manager will serve at least 3 years no matter what.

My point is just cause we got rid of the right men,(Turner/Taylor/Jones) we shouldn’t automatically keep the wrong man.

To Mick’s credit the club is in a much better place now than when he took over…so ironically it would be a relatively smooth transition for a new manager to take over.

First of all, i am a home and away supporter and i am also quite embarrassed by our fans to say the least. for god sake. Not for all of the season have we had our best squad out, when we have (almost) we have had spells in the season where we have been 4th/5th/3rd. Lately we have had a really depleted squad. Our fans need to calm down, we are still building. Recently we have lost to good teams, Watford, Stoke etc. We lost to Cardiff on saturday, yes we was poorly but ffs – did you see the team we had out? If we would have said that to be our 11 at the start of the season, we would have said yes thats our reserve team. If we dont go up this season it isnt a disaster. If we can get Jarvis and Kightly back on the wings in decent time, we can probably make a good go of it this season.

I also have very little time for the ‘king’ Eastwood. What us fans dont see is what he is like in training/away from the pitch, Mick does. He is obviously not doing something right.. and ffs, on saturday he missed a header that if Elliott or Kyle would have missed there would have been MAYHEM in the stands, and this summed up the support atm IMO – there was no reaction when it was Eastwood that missed it.

Support is voluntary. I choose not to be near the Molineux at the moment. It’s just not good for the blood pressure. Please keep your condescending commands to yourself. Supporters put their hard-earned money into the club, paying pretty large sums, IMHO, and therefore paying for the right to voice their discontent.

It now looks as if this will be the situation through to the end of the season and possibly beyond. Looking at final positions and then team rosters around the transfer windows will probably be the only guideline.

It looks like the party’s over for this year.

OK Mr. Moxey here is a serious question for you to answer. Let us presume the situation with McCarthy does not improve either this season or next, what action will be taken, if any? As fans, last season was a big surprise considering the exodus of players and the inexperience of the academy players who were drafted in BUT with the addition of more players in August PLUS even more players in the January window, we have made no progress whatsoever and this taken on its own is enough for fans to get frustrated and that excludes the various decisions which McCarthy has erroneously made all season. So, please tell us ALL what you will do and please do not say it is a hypothetical question because in most Wolves fans eyes, the situation I have mentioned EXISTS NOW and if you have not yet noticed, we are not happy!

MM took his rose tinted glasses off after the Cardiff game and stated what the supporters have known for a long time. He is after all responsible for training, coaching and picking the team and only playing his favourites which is why we are in trouble. I can’t let some of this garbage go by without comment.

“Progress” was talked about at the beginning of the season and still is. I’m sorry……where?!?

Of course, no team wins and/or plays well every week but we are over two thirds of the way through the season and where in any way, shape or form, is there progress? The only blip we have had is the occasional good performance amidst the mediocrity.

I’m one of the ones who can’t get to games which means I listen to the independent, objective voices of Radio 5 and Sky on a regular basis. Game after game, I’ve had to endure unbiased assessment of this wonderful, young team that is aiming for the top 2(remember!)….Ipswich away: “poor”, Sheff Utd at home: “no ideas”, Blackpool at home: “extremely lucky”, Morecambe: “embarrassing”, Barnsley away: “outclassed”, Crystal Palace at home: “poor defending”, Hull away: “woeful”, Hull at home: “dreadful”, Leicester at home: “dull”….I could go on!

We are shambolic and should be judged not against the Colchesters and Scunthorpes of this world who have nothing to spend but the Palaces, the Sheff Utds and the Sotons…..Oh yes, they’ve massively underachieved as well and they haven’t waited 3 years to take action (and Burley would have got the push if Scotland hadn’t bizarrely paid money for him!)

MM is not a great manager. He’s a decent man whose answer to problems is to buy more players and to change teams and tactics till hopefully something works out. He is not up to the job and when that fact is clear, you don’t give him 2 years as a reward for doing better than expected in year 1.

Please let him go and get someone in who can handle the players, handle the pressure and most of all knows what he’s doing! This guy patently doesn’t!

MM has made some serious mistakes this year but i don’t believe change is necessarily the right way to go.however, i think the board should make it very clear to MM that the team needs to show an improvement in results and entertainment value by the end of the season. with the transfer window system the time to replace a manager is either at the end of the season or in Oct so that you have time for the new man to assess the squad and get players in for pre-season/january.in the past we have sacked managers far to hastily (taylor anyone?)due to fan pressure.as fans i think we should accept that team is average and get behind them from start to finish. the best example of this in recent times was Southampton last year despite the result.

Yes my “love” is unconditional, which is the exact reason why I question the retention of a manager who, in my opinion, is taking the club backwards.

I fail to see how anyone who proclaims to “love” the club and suggest blind loyalty is the way forward. Just because someone is employed by the club, doesn’t mean they should receive unconditional support or indeed mean they have any real feeing for the club themselves.

I keep reading articles about how 2 or 3 wins will put us back in the play off frame. Well thats great but everyone seems to be forgetting that all the other teams have to slip up too. Out of the last 14 games 8 of them are teams above us.

Sorry but I just don’t see it, even if we start performing and winning most of our games it will still be difficult to reach the play off’s, there are only probably two places left anyway.

If you study the league positions at this time of the season they don’t change much, the way they look now will be pretty much the way they will look at the end of the season.

On another subject, if McCarthy stays for next season how an earth will he deal with the team, what will he say to them?

“Sorry lads, I know I told you last season that you were the best bunch of hard working players, but I was wrong, so I’m going to sell you all and try a different bunch!”

    “Motivation Mick!”

How can he do it? I would be so embarrassed by this shambles that I would find it hard to show my face again, let alone turn up in August for another go!

What are these players going to be like next season:

    Breen
    Craddock
    Collins
    Grey
    Potter
    S Ward
    D Ward
    Olofinjana
    Bothroyd
    Keogh
    Elliot
    Eastwood
    Kyle

Is he going to coach them into being better players, is he going to sell them. What will they be worth?

This is a new low for Wolves, all our youth players out of the frame, a whole team of sub-standard players out of their depth and an arrogant attitude shown by the club towards the fans that still turn up week in week out. Add to that a manager that does not have the ability to motivate his squad and carries out pitch battles with some of them in the press for all to see.

To sum up, what you have is a badly run club with no direction and a manager and chief executive that repeatedly shoot from the

I agree with rebuilding our squad from the bottom up with “young and hungry” players.
I am patient to wait a little longer for success. I would rather we strengthened the squad more and allowed our better youngsters a little more time to mature before we go up. I don’t want us to plummet straight back down again like we did last time.

I do doubt that we are actually strengthening the squad enough though.
Mick has undoubtedly found us some good youngsters in Kightly, Jarvis and Edwards.
That said, what of his other acquisitions? He persuaded one of the most promising strikers outside of the Prem to come to the club, then seemingly set out to destroy the guys career. He brought in mediocrity like Potter, S. Ward, etc…
Mick has also failed to find another centre back when it is blindingly obvious to everyone that one is needed somewhat desperately.
Worst of all though is Mick’s tactical decision making. He has spent the season chopping and changing players (particularly in attack) instead of allowing an understanding to form. He has insisted on playing “favourites” and players out of position rather than change tactics or use our own youth (that served him so well last year). Worst of all is his failure to follow his own professed selection criteria in not allowing Rosa a chance despite him being the form player at the club.

I don’t agree with JM regarding Mick. I don’t think he is our long-term future at all. I’m not calling for him to be sacked though. I want him to continue so that we can be sure of not winning promotion this season. I actually want him to fail to reach the play-offs. Hopefully then he will go of his own accord, after all, he did say this was the minimum acceptable achievement for this season.

I remember his summarizing for the world cup, I thought at the time that he sounded embarrassing and lacking in intelligence, and remember thinking ‘thank goodness he isn’t our manager.’

When he was appointed I was bitterly disappointed. I believe that our demise before last season was over hyped and the players that got us out of it were our own home grown crop. I really enjoyed watching our youth players come into their own.

I think that Chris Evans had a lot more to do with our success last season than did McCarthy!

So to cut a long story short, I didn’t rate him before and I rate him even less now!

Yes we all love and support the club BUT how far do you carry on with an employee who wont listen and cannot get a squad he put together to stop leaking goals against teams who have the same ambitions we do – 7 conceeded goals in 2 home games is a remedy for failure NOT promotion!

Moxey must pinch himself every morning,to think he gets paid and knows very little about football, you can see why he and MM get on so well shame Morgan has taken sides.

I reckon a poll of Wolves fans at the games would work in favour of the current management 70/30. In fact if what you say is correct, why were all those haters shouting his name out 6 months ago? Surely opinions of people cannot change that quickly? If so why are Labour still in power after so long? they sold us down the river longer than 6 months ago. I seem to remember season ticket sales were up on this time last year in comparision to Hoddles reign, how can that be for a crap manager? It just appears ridiculous that a person can attract so much barracking when 12 months ago he was a hero.

95 – 7 goals in 2 games, not 2 home games. Watford was away!

Things are pretty dire at the moment, but its NOT time to make changes. Its time for stability and staying together, I salute Moxey and Morgan for their stance.

McCarthy is making some ridiculous decisions, none more so than not picking Freddie because of his workrate and then signing the laziest striker in the world in Kyle and putting him straight in.

I still want to give Mick time though, and thats a full 3 years, not 18 months.

98 Stand Corrected – 8 goals conceeded in the last 3 Home games!

    3 against Palace
1 against Sheff Wed & (Managed a win)
    4 against Stoke City

NB* The more notable is 7 conceeded against like minded teams that want a Play Off spot
