Injured Wolves winger Michael Kightly has insisted that the fans are right to vent their frustration on the players – and not manager Mick McCarthy.
Kightly has been out of regular first-team action since injuring his ankle at West Brom in November and Wolves are currently on a run of just two wins from their last 13 League games without the influential wide man.
Watch the video to see the full interview with Kightly
Supporters have been expressing their dissatisfaction towards manager Mick McCarthy in numbers all week, following the goalless draw with Blackpool, but Kightly believes that it is those who pull on the old gold and black that should be the recipients of any anger.
“I understand their frustration,” Kightly said.
“But I think it’s not the manager that they should be frustrated with, I think it’s the players if I’m honest.
“I’m a player and I’ll take any criticism from them as well if I’m not doing my job.”
Kightly is firmly in support of his under-fire boss and believes that Wolves are unlikely to find anyone better qualified to do the job than McCarthy.
“I think Mick McCarthy is a top manager in this league,” Kightly said.
“I don’t think you’re going to get any better and I think every single player in our squad would say that.”
“Maybe some that are a bit bitter that they aren’t playing might say different, but deep down they know that he’s a top manager and a top man and what he’s done for this club already has been unbelievable.”
He points to the fact that Wolves’ play-off finish last season was largely unexpected, given the size of the task McCarthy inherited and because of that expectations have risen.
“We were tipped to go down last season and finishing fifth, it’s an unbelievable achievement,” he said.
“If he hadn’t have done that and say we’d finished 12th last season, he wouldn’t be under the pressure he’s under now, so he’s a little bit of a victim of his own success.”

Mick Macarthy is a good manager, far better than Dave Jones ever was .It is easy to forget the shambles Macarthy inherited , largely courtesy of Jones . Jones recipe for success was sign over the hill players interested only in generous contracts ,the resultant of which were the abysmal premier league performances .Unexpected success last season has led to unjustified optimism this . Let Macarthy get on with the job with his young team and real success can be looked forward to .

Sorry Kites, your loyalty to MM is clear for anyone to see BUT MM has had funds and time to bring in players and sort out the big problem of no pace at centre half
Even with injuries, MM has shown that he has not got the abillity or tactical nouse to use the youngsters and the experienced players more effectively, resulting in S Ward being played on the left wing/ midfield and N Collins playing at left back?
Players have been overlooked due to favouritism and players have not been allowed chance to blend
Not just the Freddie saga, but the sheer non sense that has led to Kevin Kyle being loaned in – and all of a sudden the combo of SEB and Keogh has been halted and any on-going progress/ understanding between the two shelved for a new combo of Kyle and SEB?
Kyle’s playing record is plain to see – and normally managers use players that have proven abillity but not MM – This man really believes that he is a magician – as most of the premature Wolves fans that gave him the title has now convinced MM that he is the real deal!
On the other hand, we have a CEO that spouts off sound bites of what he has done for the club – more nearer the truth is the reverse – what the club has done financially for this man – who talks of backing every manager 100% – verbally that is and when its time to wield the axe – Moxey spins 360% faster than Superman!
MM and Moxey have one thing in common, they BOTH forget that the fans are the backbone of the club and if you abuse their trust by trying to slate them publicly any chance you get then, you deserve what you get!
The booing that was caused by MM’s substitution decisions and the pathetic self made Daily Mail survey (which was a God send for Moxey and MM) but based on research from where exactly? No-one really knows, BUT hey why not use it to beat the fans with the seasonal big stick of “expectation”
Baggie Boy said on another thread that we are from the West Midlands and our footballing history and traditions automatically gives the “expectancy” – we agree totally!
We have PASSION AND PRIDE – thats what we mean when we all sing “WE ARE WOLVES”
Unlike Newcastle, If we were mid table in the Prem we would be over joyed at the progress and far more realistic than the Geordies are
Kites you are undoubtedly a great talent and a we admire your loyalty – BUT MM really cannot cope with the squad and has not got a clue against better opposition – 7 goals in the last 2 home games says it all!
WE ARE WOLVES AND WE ALL LOVE THE CLUB – THATS WHY IT HURTS MR KIGHTLY

3. Paul I really hope you’re taking the p**s! Jones is a far superior manager and the mess we were in before McCarthy was down to Twoddle. The reason we ahd an unsuccessful premiership campaign wasn’t down to Jones but down to the board not releasing funds. If it wasn’t for Jones bringing in players like Irwin, Ince et al we would have been nowhere. Try thinking before talking such crap
Report abuse
Nice to see Kites sticking by the manager who gave him his chance at Championship football, but we all know MM is living on borrowed time.
Steve Morgan hopefully still has plans for this club & they involve playing in the Prem!
Kites 10 out of 10 for loyalty but it aint the players who buy players and choose who plays the games. It also aint the players who loan out players and let them get cup tied when they are needed for todays game(Dan Jones). The players are to blame for poor performances.Mick is to blame for a lot of things.
Kites whilst I appreciate your point of view but have you forgotten that it is MM who is responcible for bringing the players to the club.I’m on about the underperformers and the substandard ones.
Let us remember he is also responsible for training, tacticks and the fitness which at times I would question.
The biggest problem is he has favourites and they can do no wrong, fairness and admitting you have made mistakes is not something he is capable of doing.
Our present form is such that relegation is a posibility,so we are looking over our shoulders beware, all the teams in this division can beat each other.
Spot on Kites.
Its the players that must take responsiblity, always!
2. Dappa – Kightly’s injury can not be blamed on McCarthy, he irritated the original injury in an incident in training, not as a result of the cup game against Cambridge.
Who do I blame for picking the team then The Manager or The Players
Report abuse
He isn’t going to do an interview and not back his gaffer is he?The players are to blame if they are played in their correct positions and aren’t showing 100% commitment. However,if the manager signs players and carries on playing them when clearly they are worse than what we already got(D Ward/S Ward/K Kyle for example),sends arguably our most reliable centre half(J Craddock) out on loan and plays players out of position then i think the manager carrys the can for that.If we scrap into the play offs and get promoted, can you trust MM to spend wisely and identify which areas need strenghening? After this season of drival and crap signings i certainly can’t.I can count on one hand how many good performances we’ve had this season. There is a very good manager at MK Dons who has played at the highest level and who has won every honour a player can win, performed miracles at Macclesfield last season.Come on Morgan, sort it out.Anybody who backs MM now can’t be watching the same games as me thats for sure.

Collygatewolf . I think your faith in Dave Jones is misplaced . I´ve seen nothing from his career so far that inspires any confidence in his capabilities. Have you ? Where? Stockport? Southampton?Wolves? If menory serves me correctly not one player Jones signed is still at the club , or indeed still playing , with one or two exceptions .Macarthy on the other hand has had to clear up a major Jones mess, bring in young boys with less money, rather than old has beens and is generally guiding Wolves in a better direction . Given time I believe Macarthy will do the job . Mind you , while I´m not in favour of sacking managers too easily , I must admit to be an admirer of Allardyce!
Paul. At Stockport Jones got them promoted and took them to a cup semi final. His Southampton career stopped before it started because of the court case and at Wolves he got us promoted! Players were sold off by moxey or contracts were not renewed after we got relegated because apparently ‘we couldn’t afford them’. We hit massive problems with hoddle NOT Jones. Have you actually been a fan more than 2 seasons?

just watched the video, confirms that you need some bone shaving done to prevent any recurrence of your problems, so just one question…..
WHY THE HELL HAS IT NOT ALREADY BEEN DONE????
yes an injection might help, but it is no cure
if you have a nail in a tyre that causes a slow puncture you get it removed and repaired so its back to normal not think ‘lets inject some glue in to prevent it from leaking and hope it works!!!

you lot go on about players being played out of position-well sometimes you have to play players were you believe that they can perform for the good of the team and to try and get a result, remember a certain Frank Munro being converted!Naylor was also a striker and a good one at that, when he came to the wolves and if you “read” the programmes (if you go to matches that is)then you will see that many other players have “favoured” positions to the one that they normally play in- but eh it’s another outlet for you lot to have a snipe at MM- Bridget & Tony if you do not believe that Moxey has done a good job then you really are on another planet or are SJH & Morgan both wrong, as for being “wolves” fans I question that comment because reading your posts over time I think not, passion and pride you dont know the meaning of the word, otherwise you would not take every opportunity to bring the good name of Wolverhampton Wanderers into disrepute.
Any one with a semblance of brain can see that we are building a good young team for the future, one that could hold it’s own in the prem, give MM time, can you honestly see these young players at this moment in time holding their own or would you get us promoted and get slaughtered week in week out, Davies,Jones,Kites, Jarvis,Keogh,Gleeson,Gobern,Eastwood,Ikeme,Hennessey,Foley,Riley, little, Bennett, Collins (lee),Murray + other young players coming through look at them and imagine them in the prem know or in say two to three years time.
Yes I want the lads in the prem- but-if we go up with the team as it is know, can you honestly, hand on heart-see us holding our own! without a very, very, very large cash injection, which will result in a lot of the players mentioned moving on before they have chance to prove them selves.

20,johnwolf it’s called freedom of speach, but dont arsenal reading m,boro villa have lots of young players and dont see them getting slautered

Johnwolf, you really believe MM is the right man to take us forward and establish us in the prem?I’d question whether its you who watches the drival at Molineux week in week out.Where do you draw the line? When we are just above the relegation zone because i tell you what,if this regime carries on that is where we will be.

agree with you again some good points that these super mick fans cannot argue with.
kights i do blame the players too, its not just mick but he’s made so many mistakes, he’s so stubborn and seems hasn’t got a clue he’s bought quantity not quality and look at our strikers what a threat they are, look at our defensive frailities and blunders. a lot of this team are not up to the job and need to be moved on.
i can see kyle getting a 3 year contract.
he won’t resign so sack him now!!!!

COLLYGATEWOLF .Jones inherited a team at Stockport that was 100% a creation of Danny Bergarra. Southampton sacked Jones officially because of impending criminal charges facing Jones . Its commonly accepted though that Southampton believed Jones would get them demoted . Check his whole record at Southampton .Rather than make personal remarks why don´t you justify your belief in Jones with facts . Is it not true that he did a bad job at Wolves ? Just look at his record . First season threw away a ten point lead. Second season just scraped into play offs . Third season one of the worst teams ever to appear in the premier league. Forth season , the bill comes to the board and whoever followed Jones . You think Jones is so great , why? Incidentally I´ve supported Wolves for more years than I care to remember all over Engtland and abroud.

colley gate wolves!!!
You are a real total fool
You say DJ got the team up to the prem – correct
You also say that the board didn’t release the funds once in the prem – good job
DJ spent 30 million pounds during his reign – went to a dinner at wolves where DJ arrogantly said “I am building a team and squad capable of promotion to the premier and sustaining premier football for years to come!!!
We then lost an 8 point lead with 5 games to go and got overhauled by albion after he had spent nearly 22 million
He spent a further 7 million and we got promoted
e spent a further 8 million and got relegated – None of DJ signings capable of sustaining premier football and the majority sold at a massive loss not forgetting the huge signing on fees and massive wages that the over aged and under performing “stars” had cost us.
Dave Jones was a smug pig headed manager that got what he deserved.
MM is exactly the same and the same result WILL follow….

We have a real life Wolf who wants to manage us. He has won almost everything that a player can win.
On the pitch he was the Guv’nor and now as a manager he has proved he is a winner as well.
He’ll get snapped up soon, Mr Morgan please sign him for us and let us become a great team again. I am sick of being 2nd rate.

20johnwolf you must be like the dinosaurs – prehistoric – your beloved MM has stated on Radio WM that TC has subjected the players to “warm down” infront of the fans at Cardiff – amidst the chants of “your not fit to wear the shirt” and he has agreed that the players deserve it – not that MM has any fault to hold his hands up for?
We have watched Wolves for years home and away – not at Cardiff due to this coach travel thing etc
If you really believe that Moxey is so good – Why did we have the largest wage bill in the division two years after we were relegated?
Why did we do a shirt sponsorship deal alledgedly for 2M for 3 years when we only receive £500k from Chaucer and the rest is “services in kind from Chaucer” totalling a supposed value of £1.5M? etc etc etc
When we were losing on penalties to Sheff Wed at the Mol we were there cheering on the lads with passion and pride – when we were losing to Leicester in the Prem we were there and lots more besides
You know diddly about us – therefore keep your patronising comments to yourself
And as far as MM is concerned he is more than prepared to let them get abused verbally by the irate fans at Cardiff but took none of the blame himself? That sums the man up in anyones book!
SJH did good for the club yes, but he also did damage to our chances of survival in the Prem by his lack of commitment – thats a fact
Steve Morgan remains to be seen as he has not really said much about the current state of the team
Wolves did not even give a performance better than Chasetown today – Is that entirely down to the players?
3 shots at goal – all game – priceless
We believe that the manager and players are doing a damn good job bringing the good name of Wolverhampton Wanderers into disrepute all by themselves by the fact that they dare wear the Old Gold N Black and put in such spineless poor excuses for games of football
We are well aware of the yougsters we have – problem is MM sends them out on loan and prefers to play his ex Sunderland lot ala Kyle, Collins etc etc
We really dont know what games you watch but you obviously havent been recently home or away and stop making a pratt of yourself!

Please print this E&S
22- to answer your question-yes I do as does a certain Mr S Bull, as does a certain Mr Taylor but I suppose we are wrong eh.
As for watching the lads-well here is a bit of history about myself, I was born in wednesbury in 1949 (and now live in tesco land-god help me), my mother and father (god rest their souls) took me to my first match at the mol in 1953 and I have been going ever since.
I have had a season ticket since 1972 and since 1953 I have missed on average maybe three home matches per season, and you are right, it has not be that good at the mol-but-I will “support” them till the good lord calls for me.
Remember(with one or two additions)this team is the same as last season with the same manager!and I do believe that MM can take we up-whether he establishes us in the prem is another matter-that could depend on the financial support that he has, I do not believe in chopping and changing managers on a whim- remember the man u fans calling for fergies head and the everton fans calling for their managers just to name a few.
Our problem the mol is that we have no patience thats why we are still in this crap division and will be until we do.

‘Scotwolf’ and ‘Bridget & Tony’
You Don’t have a bloody clue!
So it’s Mccarthy’s fault that Keogh and Bothroyd lost the ball twice leading to goals today? No matter what you say or how bad a bad patch we’re going through at the moment, teams do have blips. McCarthy is a proven manager, give him the time and money and we will achieve.
21- just saw your post, yes the teams you mentioned do have young players-BUT-the difference with them is that they are mostly their reserve teams and have been built up over a period of time and by spending a lot of money-TIME-something that as wolves fans we do not understand.
Also apart from reading how long have they been in the prem?
johnwolf has a good point about us going up and being soundly beaten back down.If by some miracle we managed to scrape into the play offs and then somehow win the playoff final and get in the prem i think that is exactly what would happen. However being realistic we know that just is not going to happen, yes we have a young team but some of them are prem material and some certainly are not.At the end of the day it is the managers job to bring in players of quality ,to make the team selection for each game , to play the team to their strenths and get the tactics right ,To motivate them, and last but not least get the result at the end of every 90 minutes. Can anyone say that any of these points are happening at the moment and that the manager is doing his job like he should be and that the team is playing as well it could be ,put simply NO . Last season was last season its the results now that count and to say our current form is poor is an understatement, the so called team re build has not worked due to players brought in that has left us all scratching our heads ,players that are still here that are just not good enough ,and players that are here that are good enough not getting a game ,combine that with non existent tactics and excuse after excuse after each failure and you have the recipe for disaster that is our season thus far.We will be lucky to escape a relegation battle on our current form and im sure im not the only one that feels that drastic change is needed to keep us in the championship never mind get us to the prem .
Kites is right to some extent but you also cannot ignore the fact that MM is not offering any indication right now that he knows how to stop the slide to the relegation zone. If nothing else MM is continuing to prove just how fixed and hence limited he is in his ideas and team selection and that is what will doom him and the team.
He has sanctioned the acquisition of the entire strike force in the current squad and yet we are STILL one of the poorest scoring teams not just in the Championship but in the Football League as a whole. Players such as Eastwood simply don’t loose their ability by putting on the old gold shirt. MM does not now how to change his way of playing to make better use of the talents his players have. There is no better evidence of that than the fact that Denes Rosa cannot get a game, as he does not fit the way MM plays, despite scoring that elusive commodity called goals in the reserves.
How many of the young and hungry Academy players have actually been given a chance to show their skills under MM? Why bring in loan players like Kyle when you already have more than ample options up front, when all barring MM can see the needs elsewhere?
Yes Kites, you are correct but MM has not been helping himself over the past three months at all either.

Face facts! the season is effectively over, we will finish just outside the play-offs or then again we might fluke our way in and be buried at the first hurdle. This team are barely good enough for this division never mind higher. There will be much pontificating from the manager and the fat controller alike about how next season will be the one and cries of “get your early bird tickets now!” and in the mean time we will continue to entertain the Scunthorpes of this world when our near neighbours welcome the cream of the Premier League. we have to bite the bullet and admit we flattered to deceive last season and the rebuilding of this club is a marathon and not a sprint. McCarthy can only pick ‘em and whether you agree with his selection or not they have to perform on the pitch. There will be no manager change for at least another season and then it will only come in the summer break. Morgan is watching the developing “Yankiegate” saga at Liverpool and I predict he would sell us in heartbeat to become involved on Merseyside.

Lets just remember that Jones took us up! And Mick inherited Hoddle’s mess! Can’t undstand why he plays Keogh in midfield after he found the net a few times in recent games. Similar to when he dropped Eastwood a week after scoring against Blackpool, Shef Wed, Bradford and scoring on his Wales debut. Surely these guys need to keep playing when they are in form. We need to keep Mick because hes done a great job over the 18 months. Give him next season too when he has a fully fit squad.

The manager bought the players, he trains them and he picks them.
The manager takes the blame, that is how the game goes.
This so called manager has loaned out or refuses to play the kids from last season who did it for us.
He has bought Breen, who’s legs have gone, and other no-hopers, from his beloved Sunderland and Ireland days. He has to play them to justify the spend.
Finally, he tried to blame the fans for the pathetic performances we have paid to watch. Nothing is ever his fault!
There is nothing positive to say about his managerial performance this year. He has to go now, while we still have a chance to make something of the season.
Luckily, there is a hungry Wolf making his way to Molineux. Bring on Paul Ince.

Could not agree more with Bridget and Tony(27).There is something fundamentally wrong with this club and it seems it does not matter which manager we have we always have the same old problems and that suggests to me it is an off the field problem.People praising Mr Moxey should realise it is so easy to cut costs and run a tight ship(I should know I am A Chartered Accountant),the difficult bit is to get out into the open market and attract finance/investors to the club to enable the manager to purchase QUALITY players.I have seen very little evidence that Mr Moxey has this ability.

Lets look at the facts. (1) we are not in good form (2) the players and manager are getting grief from the fans. All this does is make it easier for teams to play us, especially at Molineux. For Tuesdays game why dont “we” the fans approach the game as if we were top of the table and steam rolling every team that came before us. Try and intidate the oppositions rather than our own team. Fair enough if we have reservations about our players manager or any other people associated with the club. We MUST do our own infighting behind closed doors and not air it in public (at the match). United we can make a difference now everyone get behind the team and lets try and push them up the table!!!!!!

Ok, if McCarthy does another season do you think it will be any different to this season?
Will he buy another 5 or 6 strikers in the hope that he will get it right, will he buy at least another two young quick central defenders and will he be able to attract any real quality to the club bearing in mind that he has turned many of the fans against the club and against each other?
It is more than just a bad patch this is probably the worst team I have seen in over 15 years now, too many of them are playing a league above themselves and there are too many passengers.
Lets just stay in the here and now, last season is gone we need to get it right from now and I believe that for McCarthy to turn things round now would take management of Herculean proportions and he is just not capable of that.
There are too many glaring holes to fill, Who in this team is going to put a foot on the ball and start to take control. Even Hennessey is starting to look ordinary because everything around him is falling to pieces.
I am sorry but anybody that thinks McCarthy should be given another season hasn’t got the best interests of this club in mind and to me they just look like they are desperately trying to save face because they have backed the wrong horse, a bit like Moxey!
It’s time, and everybody knows it! Never mind about people talking about fickle Wolves fans, the really worrying thing is that the national press are openly laughing at our ineptness on the field of play!
McCarthy unfortunately is the straw that is breaking the Camels back and is showing up things that have been going wrong at the club for several years. Anybody ever wonder why Dave Jones was made to sign a confidentiality document?
Well I and lots of other fans can see that things are very wrong with our club and it isn’t just McCarthy that needs sorting out.
Top to bottom please Mr. Morgan!

51 spot on, MM has had 2 years 1 Lucky 2nd his team his tactics give him a 3rd and he will achieve relegation, this team would not be a top 6 in the mighty Div 1 , then again that could be a move forward according to the maniac MM.

33 Frescy – You are right about the players making individual errors BUT, Is it ALL down to the players?, Who chose these players? , and who sets out team tactics/ selections etc etc?
The “blip” you are talking of has gone on nearly ALL season – and we seem to be able to play the bottom half of the league ok, but anyone on the top half that puts up a fight, we seem to have not many ideas on how to deal with them?
PS* There are lots of other Wolves fans that have had enough of the dire lacklustre performances apart from us and ScottWolf – Are they all wrong aswell? & Can you tell us all what the answer is, as even MM has admitted that he hasnt got a clue and its not the first time this season that he has stated this!

some people on here have short memories on Dave Jones. He was the only manager in 20 years to get us promoted to the prem and for me that says it all.It was Hoddle who left the club in stuck, after using all the parachute money and failing to get us into the play offs.
My worry is that we have enough games to get into the play offs but MM has lost the fans confidence. A good win tommorow will go a long way to restoring this.

I think its ashame how MM lost it this year after achieving so much with so little last season.
The squad so much bigger this season and that means more competition for places, which is meant to healthly for any team. For MM this hasnt been the case he clearly dosent know his strongest side and keeps chopping and changing it, which makes us inconsistent and unsettled.Where last season the team picked itself, with players such as keogh and kightly full of confidence and energy pushing us forward game in, game out.
This year we needed to add to the defence and strikers. We needed a quick strong centre back, not D Ward, who plays like his legs are strapped together, thats why he couldnt get in palace’s side. We needed striker who comes alive in and around the box, not someone who just puts in a SHIFT!!So in Freddy Eastwood we got that, anyone will agree in you’ve seen his goals for grays and sonthend!!!
So when he started scoring things didnt look bad, other than the team were lacking a left sided winger and a quick centre back, both should have been bought in, either on loan or in windows, especially when javis was ruled out for further weeks. Neither happened or have happened since, its a joke how Freddy dosent get in, he needs a good fair run in the team.
Does anyone other than MM know why IMPACT KYLE was brought in, another man who couldnt get in his own team in the same league!!!! only ever scored 24 goals, Freddy has scored more in 3 differebt seasons.
Freddy has the odds stacked against him hes not Irish, never played for Sunderland and his surname aint Colins or Ward!!!
We need width back in the team, either from the youth team or on loan, with breen and craddock back it looks a little bit better defensively, get Gray out!!And keep a settled team with the best quality we’ve got!! Not just players who run round like headless chickens (putting in a SHIFT)
So if MM does this i think he has a slight chance of winning fans over again and seeing side with hunger and energy again, but the way hes been so stubbern about his selections may end him, if it does, then lets hope Morgan is straight on the phone to MK Dons.
