Wolves star injury blow
Thursday 14th February 2008, 11:27AM GMT.
Wolves winger Michael Kightly needs surgery on his troublesome ankle injury.
The England under-21 man is hoping not to go under the knife until the summer but the key winger admits his hopes of playing again this season are hanging in the balance.
Kightly had an injection on the ankle earlier this week and should be back in light training next week with a view to a first team comeback in early March.
But he knows that if he breaks down in training once more before May he is likely to be forced into writing the season off – which would deal another big blow to Mick McCarthy’s promotion plans.
Wolves have won just four of the 15 league games they’ve played since Kightly was forced off through injury at The Hawthorns in November.
“I’ve been told I’ve definitely got to have this bone shaving operation on my ankle at some point because this problem will come back if I don’t,” said Kightly.

“I’ve been told I’ve definitely got to have this bone shaving operation on my ankle at some point because this problem will come back if I don’t.
“It could be in three months, four months or maybe not for a year but it will come back. So I’m going to have the operation at some point soon – hopefully not until the summer.
“I’m still quite confident that I can play again this season but it will all depend on how well the rehabilitation goes after this injection.”
After such a long lay-off with injury, Kightly remains determined not to rush himself back from the ankle ligament damage that has ruined his campaign.
He intends to complete a fortnight’s full training before putting himself up for selection this time.
“I had another injection on it this week and it already feels much better. I’ve been told to sit out a week but hopefully I’ll be ready to go back into light training next week.
“I want to have a couple of weeks this time before putting myself up for selection.
“And if I do break down this time I’ll go in for the operation before the end of the season and that is probably going to be the end of my season.”
Wolves’ hopes of FA Cup progress have been handed a boost with the news that Cardiff key man Joe Ledley has been ruled out with a hamstring injury.

What a stupid thing to do. Who is our club doctor? I’ve had this myself and an injection is not the way forward! It will only make things worse! For christ sake what a joke, fair enuff risk him if we’re 2nd or 3rd in the league battling for automatic promotion but not when we are 12th!!!!! get a grip! I would rather have a 100% fit Michael Kightly starting next season, not another Matt Murray!
Its about time we tried Kyle on the right wing position. Matt Murray is back in training – theres another option whilst Kightly is out.
and all because mick put him on so you could beat cambridge tut tut boing boing
Report abuse
Thats our season finished then.
Best not to rush him back. Ought to really get him right for next season, if he comes back too soon he be facing the albion and Robbo was the main reason why he has this ankle problem in the 1st place.
MENTAL MICKY OUT!
Give him the surgery now and build him back up for next season.
3. It would never have happened anyway if your fat talentless loser of a left back didn’t cripple him.
Wolfmeister – stop being so daft. Kyle has to be on a good run of goals scored before he’d be tried on the wing ;-)
Better to get the operation done now so that Kightly is fit for the pre-saeson. Would rather have a fit player for the start of next season, than risk him doing more damage to the ankle.
What is up with the club’s medical staff?
Goodbye 2007/08.
get him in for surgery and get it done.Don’t risk his fitness for the sake of a failing promotion campaign.
I did say that he would be out for months about 2 months ago, and I did put the question as to why the club don’t come clean about injuries?
I also asked about the injury to Mark Davies because there are some conflicting reports to say the least!
Never mind…Maybe the forgotten man in Lewis Gobern might suddenly become fit now!..we need a natual Right Winger not elliot not keogh not potter not gibson nor henry!..get in the emergancy lone market MM and try and save your wolves carrer before its 2 late.
MM OUT RUINED EVERY CLUB/COUNTRY HE BEEN WITH…FANTASTIC JOB LAST SEASON MUCH APPRICIATED.
CARDIFF HERE WE COME
Report abuse
I knew this would happen. I said after he broke down last time after Watford/Training that we’d be lucky to see him again this season.
MM has got to get the lad the surgery he needs & then get him fit & flying for next season.
Problem is that Kites, unlike alot of the 11, is enthusiastic about playing for the wolves & would so on 1 leg if he could.
Get fit soon Kites.
I am so sorry to hear that Kites still having problems with your ankle and although it would be great to have you back playing Kites. I know you will be absolutely gutted at not being able to play but it would be better for you to get it sorted now rather than make it worse playing and then being out for next season as well.
Take Care and Good Luck to you

Just had another thought!
All these ankles and foot injuries that are happening to players not just in this division but any division. Should the players be looking at the boots that they are wearing. These injuries would not have happened in the days of say Billy Wright etc. I know times and football have moved on but I do think that the boots of today are flimsy and not strong enough to cope with players having their feet trod on etc.
Does anyone know whats happening with Mark Davies, he’s not listed on the Injury Update on the web site and did not play in the reserves against Leicester?
Also why do our players seem to be out 3 to 4 times as long as players with other clubs?
We need more investment in the medial / physio side of things, it’s all very well spending on transfers / Academy which is needed but Lewis Gobern, Kevin O’Connor, Matt Murrey, Mark Davies etc etc, also minor injuries seem to drag on for months, whats happening? yet other player are going out on loan to Bury, Hereford etc and staying 100% fit and playing every match?
My prediction is he’ll never put the gold and black on again.
We won’t get promoted this year is pretty much a known fact and in the summer the premiership clubs will come looking for the likes of Jarvis, Kightly and Murray.
At least we’ll have some money to rebuild again and it’ll be a good excuse for Mick next season again.

P.S all the best Kites

13 – ruined ?
Sunderland promoted, then no funds
Ireland in FIFA ratings under MM up frpm 13th to 39th
Changing managers is more often the problem than the solution.
Keep the faith
Report abuse
Why is it our players are not recovering from injury? What is the position with Gobern and Davies now after missing a whole season.
If Kites needs an op why on earth would we risk him playing this season and not to have the op till the summer? It doesn’t make any sense.
I am so mad at the incomprehensible decisions made at the Mol this season. Loaning out players when we need them, playing people out of position insted of getting cover for them, paying a fortune for a player and then not playing him. Tuesday’s substitutions at 85 and 90 minutes – bonkers! I could go on. We are not good enough to even think about going up because we don’t even have a settled team and there is no way to promotion with the way the team is being run.

I think you will find that during the 50′s players were made to keep going even if they were injured. I have a friend who played right back for Walsall in the mid-fifties and he broke an ankle playing against Wolves in a friendly. The trainer just poured a bottle of water over it and told him to stamp on it!
In the Seventies players were given Cortisone injections which took away the pain but eventually lead to crumbling bones. I heard an interview with Mick Shannon and he is virtually crippled these days because of those injections.
Today the players are King, and the amount of money involved is too much of a risk, so they are kept wrapped up in cotton wool.
It all comes down to money these days!
Don’t risk playing on the injury. Is it still possible to do loan deals as I’m sure we could find a decent right winger for the rest of the season?
I agree 20 solihull wolves… there is too many doom and gloomers out there and too many supporters who only like it when we win a true supporter sticks by their team win or lose not slag the manager off that gets you no where COME ON YOU LOT START TO SUPPORT not whinge

20 – i can see your point
but what is most alarming is
i cant see any change to tell me its going to get better! he is starting to sounds like dj when he kept saying judge me after so long! also the keep chipping away is replaced by “as long they put in a shift”
there is no improvement, i would probably still moan if we lost 4-2 and showed signs of last year, but there isnt
what about signing a centre half in the window? no mm signs his 9 or 10th striker (who has hasnt found his best 2pairing yet), but ill know what he’ll say “breeny and jody will be like 2 new signings” fair enough i like the pair. but is breen going to do the business next season? he already cracking on as it is! even if he stays will he be fit?
lets face mm is clueless? why not loan a right winger? oh no we can play one of several strikers there
wasnt elliot hailed a “wing wizard” 2weeks ago, funnily enough mm drops him 2games later. keogh and seb called “the dream partnership” 2weeks later they split up
i love him to prove me wrong but i think its time for thick mick to move on
Report abuse
20 are you MM Dad do you really think that this idiot is doing a good job
My Advise would be for you to keep him and then you could be a massive club in divison 1 you amaze me this is why your Owner and Moxey can do what ever they want to idiots like you, but I am sure that the real FOOTBALL fans at your club know the real story, and the way forward
Report abuse
Wanna know whats wrong with Mark Davies, absolutely nothing. MM does not rate him thats why hes not playing
Report abuse
Its ok though, you managed to beat cambridge.
as i understand it, jarvis can play on the right, and edwards the left, so maybe that is how we will have to fill in until kightly is back.
or would rather have some of the youngsters/reserves who play in position in the first team playing on the right or left though, than playing a striker there!! Give them a try, give them some experience. They seem to do well on loan.
At the moment, it comes across to everyone as MM just crobarring favourites into the team.
Or what about playing to our strengths and going 4-3-3. We’re not getting anywhere at the moment so there is not a lot to lose!!
C’mon mick, you know there are options that make sense.

You say to your supporters COME ON YOU LOT START TO SUPPORT one thing I will give you is that you lot do seem to have a good crowd who keep going no matter what,so they are supporting the club, but just because they have a different view to you dont slag them , do you go home and away, my mates at work do and they say MM is a Idiot, however I have watched you on TV and you are Playing Relegation football, keep Mad MM there and you will go down
Report abuse
Have it sorted properly , this season is over for Kites, to break down so quickly in his first start back would be asking for longer term problems
Report abuse
Bad news for you guys, as many of you believe this is the man who can kickstart your season.
Seriously all the best in his recovery it’s not nice to see players get dogged by injuries, especially players with talent (and yes he does have talent).
We will have to carry on without him. If Gobern is not ready, then Jones should be on the left and Jarvis on the right. Kyle should not be a regular. The comment was when we signed that he could change a game from the bench – so that is where he should be. We could do with Craddock back, but he played in last nights’ reserve hammering, so not straight away. Up front we only have 2 choices- Ebanks-Blake and Keogh or Eastwood.
As I said yesterday, we probably need 10 out of 12 points before the Tescos arrive. As for them, you have got your work cut out for automatic. A poor defence and can’t play away from home!
Can Waggy come out of retirement?
Failing this, how about Steve “The Tank” Kindon or Steve Froggatt?
I’m slowly losing the will to live………though not quite crazy enough to go to Tesco’s yet!
3 boggie fan absolutely correct-MM risked him agianst non-league to keep him in a job with no thought for the player or team for the rest of the season-shame on you Mick
Report abuse
and all because mick put him on so you could beat cambridge….
And there was me thinking he agravated his injury next day in training?
I just wish some people would get the FACTS straight!
Lets not forget how eager Kites was to get back and he declared himself ready for Cambridge. He told MM he could do it. As he is a professional player why would MM doubt his judgment. It was just unfortunate. So we can’t dwell on it forever. Lets discuss what we have to solve this problem rather than criticise. C’MON WOLVES !

no 30 through wins and losses
Report abuse
Now I’m not Mick’s biggest supporter but blaming him for this is plain daft. Kightly felt he was fine. Unfortunately he was wrong. If you want to blame anyone, blame Kightly for being too keen to play.
With Gobern and Kightly both injured, can anyone explain why we then sent out Elliot Bennett on loan to Bury? He looked OK in his brief appearances in the league cup. He’s already been out on loan at Crewe where he earned a lot of praise so why not use him instead of sending out again… Oh yes! He’s home grown and would be playing in his preferred position, no wonder he’s been sent out! Someone has to make way for one of Mick’s favourites to try and attempt to resurrect their failing career.

Same question alot of us wolves fans are asking.
Why is it when one of our players gets injured, they are out for so long. Surely they could have seen he needed a Op months ago when doing scans. I think we should not risk but get him sorted as soon as possible, so he is ready for next season.
Anyway with sick note daily in charge of the clubs medical facilities is it hardly surprising.
Can we ask Waggy to come out of retirement, with Mike Bailey in midfield and John Richards up front, just get get some momentum. Not much got past Mike Bailey unless they were feeling suicidal!
Might as well get Knowles back as well for good measure..!
surgery now. we’ve missed him so much, we’re no better than a 12th place team in this awful standard league. Thismis the worst i’vce ever seen this league, and the kids plus a decent defender would have seen us climb out. Still, muddle through these next set of fixtures and pick up popints, or my 12th will be optomistic….
Definately agree with most on here, give him the surgery NOW or he will be in out like the okey kokey for the rest of his career. We have players on loan that could do the trick, if I remember correctly from last season Little was brilliant going forward from RB. Surely if not Gobern, Little would be far better than Elliott or Keogh on the right
Report abuse
I have said this before when he broke down last time. How many times does this happen at Wolves. Player gets injured then Weeks and weeks later its decided they need Surgery. It’s happened with Murrey and Lescott in the past and now with Kites. At any other Club the player gets the Surgery as soon as the injury happens and are back in their team befroe the Wolves Doctors have actually decided if the player needs surgery or not. The club is turning into a joke and that’s not just at management level I am not MM’s biggest fan but he is not to blame for everything that happens at the club the whole structure needs a shakeup from top to bottom (Including the inept Doctors)
