Wolves spend £140k on agents

Thursday 14th February 2008, 2:56PM GMT.

Wolves chief executive Jez MoxeyWolves forked out over £140,000 in agents’ fees during their recruitment drive last summer.

The Molineux men paid out £142,600 on 24 players in the six months leading up to December 2007 – half the average spend of Championship clubs.

The period includes the close season when Wolves signed Freddy Eastwood, Stephen Elliott, Matt Jarvis, Darren Ward, Kevin Foley and Michael Gray.

Today’s figures show Wolves are in 17th place in the table of fees paid to agents by Championship clubs.

Topping the league with the highest amount paid is Leicester City.

Stoke City are in second spot and Charlton Athletic third.

The average spend for all Championship clubs is £278,532 – double the amount Wolves paid out.

Chief executive Jez Moxey is pleased Wolves are below average, but believes the figure should be even lower.

“As a percentage of the total costs involved for those players, the amount we have paid to agents is low, and this is borne out in our being placed 17th out of 24 clubs in our division,” he said.

“We are pleased to see that we have performed well in comparison to our peers and will continue to work hard to keep these costs to a minimum in the future.”

Overall, spending on player transfers increased significantly for Football League clubs but spending on agent fees decreased.

    well done mr moxey.
    It’s not HIS money.
If he had been willing to “spend” a bit more, we might not have missed on on the likes of Billy Sharp & other players who chose to sign for another team & would’ve given us a better chance of pushing for promotion!

    24 Players in 6 months?
Now if Wolves had signed decent ones, we’d be laughing, instead we are a laughing stock!
What would give you more satisfaction, 18 pints of Stella or 24 pints of Carling costing the same price?
    We want quality NOT quantity!

Let me put into terms your brains might be able to grasp, 24 donkeys or 15 thoroughbreds at the same price?
If Moxey hadn’t have been so tight with the money ( & it’s not even his), Wolves would’ve had this micky mouse league sewed up ages ago!

Well done Moxey! oh wait a minute we are where the money has set us, middle of the division team…going nowhere..

Moxey, question why not spend a tad more of the money WE PAY to watch a poor game and buy some quality players?

Get into the conference and you can buy even more players for nothing and watch us hit Division 1!

Another clown statement only proving his worthlessness in the big world of football.

Ought for nowt Moxey..get what you pay for…check the league every Monday and see if the small amount spent makes any sense, doesn’t to me..

Would be interesting to know where we come in the table for spending on transfer fees compared to this. I would think we’d be near the top with the amount we’ve spent since the summer so for us to be as low as 17th in terms of how much we’ve paid out to agents is bloody good work I reckon!

    Simon in Oklahoma!

I would think Mick uses his Sunderland & Ireland connections to bypass their agents, or at least to weaken their powers if he already has a good relationship with those players. Young untried players also command much less in agents fees, & wages, than Premiership players. This all adds up to Wolves doing it on the cheap. I’m sure thats why Morgan adores Mick… cause his policy is actually based on aquiring & developing young hungry, hard working players (ie cheap)rather than on the multi million pound premaddonas that all the other clubs are funding. There’s also a greater chance of developing the Keane’s, Lescott’s & Hennessey’s for nothing…but with every prospect of selling them for millions, cause we are just a feeder club now, right? Shame though about the ‘mindless minority’ booing. Aren’t they supposed to be satified with poor to mediocre?

I assume Morgan knew what he’s bought. Someone remind him we are WOLVES, not Plymouth or Barnsley. Our fans have consistent expectations & yes we are living in the past because we have a great past.

This is nothing new, in fact its never not been like this. Our players have always had to play under such expectations. (First time i’ve heard them whine about it though)

Maybe Morgan was a bit naive expecting & hyping automatic promotion when he took over. (It could’ve been worse Steve…you could have bought Newcastle & promised them the Champions League…then you’d really know what booing is)

But as for Moxey…I like him. I think he’s a good businessman. But he can only do what he can do under Morgan’s instructions. There’s no Sir Jack ‘cash cow’ anymore. Those days are gone, & Morgan will not commit his personal fortune like Sir Jack did(…err, even though he made a 30M pledge that he would.) cause he doesn’t love the Wolves like Sir Jack did.

    Well reality check time Steve.
No investment & financial stability as a priority equals no fans or season tickets, and therefore no more financial stability!

So get your check book out.

By the way, how are the early birds selling?

Get Moxey out! clear the board. And Morgan get some people in who want the best for wolves, not just lining their pockets!

So agents are a big talking point at the moment, our two bit players have too bit agents, hence the low fees…BIG DEAL..

    Hey Jez,

Those fees quoted were to buy 1st Division level players, not Championship quality with potential for the Premiership. That is what we would have been doing if there was any sort of planning going on. Then the agents fees would have been double this 1st division amount.

The low figure isn’t something that Jez should be commended on, it is a condemnation of the miserable commercial and team management this club is suffering from.

Not to worry, Mr Morgan will not tolerate this Mickey Mouse performance much longer.
