Villa blog: Menacing frontline

John CarewGreat result on Saturday. When I think of some of the unlucky goals we’ve conceded in the past I’m not going to worry too much about our fortune with the first goal, writes Villa blogger Gregg Williams.

Freddie Bouma is a bit of a cult hero with the Villa fans, and it was fantastic to see him score, especially such an important goal.

It took him a while to settle here and had a few niggling injuries, but he’s a very capable player and his experience would be invaluable if we make it into Europe.

Speaking of cult heros, what about Super Marlon? His cameos as a substitute have been like watching a man possessed.

You can’t fault his attitude and his partnership with Carew was probably the most menacing frontline i’ve ever seen at Villa Park.

It’s nice to know that an injury to Gabby won’t leave us looking completely toothless up front, and the competition for places will be really healthy.

I felt sorry for Petrov and Mellberg, subbed at half time having been played out of position once again.

They were both desperately poor in the first half and some credit has to go to Martin O’Neill for essentially admitting his own mistake and taking them both off.

The good thing is that we stumbled across a winning formula which could see us pick up our performances after a few poor games.

We had much better balance with Gardner at right back and playing with two out and out wingers.

It’s great to be looking at other team’s results with interest again.

The chasing pack behind the out of sight top three are all anxiously looking at upcoming fixtures and the constantly changing league table, and it’s brilliant to be a part of it.

We have some massive games ahead of us, but I’m hoping that the Newcastle win can set us on a good run.
