Hero’s family help injured
Monday 11th February 2008, 11:35AM GMT.
The family of a Black Country soldier who died in Afghanistan handed over almost £4,000 to help those injured in the line of duty.
Wolves-mad Captain Sean Dolan, of Rowley Regis, was described as the “finest soldier of his generation” by the Ministry of Defence.
His widow, Mitch, and son, Ashley, who have fundraised to help wounded UK personnel, were invited on to Wolves’ Molineux pitch at half-time in the match with Stoke on Saturday with members of Capt Dolan’s regiment, 1st Battalion The Worcestershire and Sherwood Forestersn.
They handed over £2,320 to Selly Oak Military Hospital and another for £1,604 for military charity Help for Heroes. Capt Dolan, aged 40, was killed by a mortar round in Helmand Province on June 30.
Ashley, 18, organised a charity football match between Wolves Fans’ Select XI and his team, Devachat FC, based in Chester, where he and Mitch live. It was arranged and played in September after he posted a message on Wolves fans’ forum Molineux Mix asking if fans would be interested in a tribute match. Ashley’s team won 3-1. Donations before and after the charity match helped boost funds raised. Mitch said: “We were very pleased with the amount of money raised at the match and the donations we have received from people as well. Hopefully this will help look after some of our soldiers and raise awareness that they may still need care once they are home.”
In another fundraising effort in September last year, Capt Dolan’s sister, Michelle, raised £2,000 when she organised a charity evening at Birchley Sports and Social Club in Oldbury. Michelle, mother Daphne, and dad Brian, handed cash to the British Limbless Ex-Service Men’s Association at Selly Oak Military Hospital, Birmingham.
