Bonny baby Kai is a little battler
Monday 11th February 2008, 11:41AM GMT.
He may only be eight weeks old, but already a Wolverhampton baby has proved to be a battler. Before Kai Best was born, doctors gave him just a three in 10 chance of survival.
The grim prognosis was given after doctors discovered that Kai suffers from a rare condition which meant many of his vital organs were squeezed into his chest area. But baby Kai has since defied all the odds.
Not only did he pull through following a major operation, but he is doing so well that he has been discharged from New Cross Hospital five months earlier than expected.
Proud parents Farina Cullis, aged 22, and 20-year-old Nick Best, of Bushbury Lane, say his progress has astounded medical staff.
Kai’s grandmother Maxine Cullis said: “He was diagnosed with a rare hernia when his mum was 20 weeks pregnant, which meant all his organs went into his chest cavity such as his spleen, intestines and his stomach.
“He was born at New Cross Hospital on December 14. The staff were fantastic and stabilised him so he could move to Birmingham Children’s Hospital.”
Kai was due to be operated on in Birmingham on December 19 but took a turn for the worst and the family called a priest. But he battled on and had his operation on Christmas Eve.
His grandmother said: “Youngsters who suffer from this face a six-month stay in hospital but he was allowed home on January 18. He is a bonny little boy who is gaining weight.” Mum Farina added today: “We are just so proud of him – he has come through more than most of us would in a lifetime. For such a small person to come through all he has done is really hard to believe. He is a real battler and we are starting to see parts of his personality already. He is already looking up to his two-year-old brother Aiden and is smiling. He is doing really well.”
