Saddlers blog: Panic selling

Tuesday 5th February 2008, 8:03AM GMT.

Scott DannJudging by the events of last week, everything could change by the time this comes out. Anyway . . . writes Saddlers blogger Mark Jones.

I’ve tried my best to digest the situation regarding Scott Dann but I keep coming to the same conclusion – that it was yet another panic selling.

Scott was under contract to us until 2010, Coventry wanted him and came in with a big money bid. Apparently Scott got wind of this (it doesn’t really matter how) and caused a big scene demanding a move. And all of this with the clock ticking towards the close of the transfer window.

So (and please correct me if I’m being naïve) didn’t Walsall hold all the aces here?

We could have offered to loan Dann to the Sky Blues, therefore effectively by-passing the deadline, on the understanding that Cov would buy the player in the close season for the agreed fee. The clause then being that the loan spell would begin as soon as we’d bought in some cover for Scott

Everyone then would be reasonably happy, Coventry get their man, we get the money, Scott gets his move, Richard Money gets time to try and find a replacement (hopefully with his budget suitably enhanced) and the Board don’t suffer a massive P.R. own goal.

I get the impression from the statements coming out of the club since Friday that they were a bit shocked by the overwhelming negative reaction from fans.

Well sorry, but what were they expecting, flowers and love hearts?

Unfortunately the fans have seen it all before – loads of times.

You almost imagine the scene in the boardroom, like something out of a Tom and Jerry cartoon, with the pound signs lighting up as soon as the club receives any half-decent offer for one of our players.

Think Fryatt and Bennett, think Darren Byfield, think Martin O’Connor, think Stuart Rimmer way back, all players seemingly sold with indecent haste.

Predictably the club was then forced to adopt the siege mentality and find a scapegoat to alleviate the pressure. On this occasion the fans and the media escaped the wrath of Jeff (for now). No, it was all the player’s fault, just like it had been for both Byfield and O’Connor, and the club just couldn’t do anything about it.

Yeah right and my date of birth is 4.2.08.

Personally I have no issue with players being ambitious (even though I reckon Scott could have done better for himself) and equally I understand that we are only a League One club and therefore always having to face the possibility of having our best players lured away.

That’s not what the problem has been this last week, even if one local journalist (the one who seems to constantly revel in telling us how small-time we are) predictably took it upon himself to tell us it was.

The problem for me is that a club which prides itself on its commercial know how just doesn’t seem to have a clue how to present itself to its ‘customers’.

There is a perception that the club is small time, lacking in ambition, not caring about its fans. It matters little now if this is true or not, those in charge need to give us something to change that perception before all the promise of this season fades away.

It’s your call fellas …

The whole Scott Dann thing caught a lot of us unawares. I went away for the weekend, got back & found half the team had seemingly vanished. Ok, an exaggeration, but a shocker nonetheless.
Thing is, the club may well have held the aces but as we saw with Martin Butler, a player just has to have a strop on & we end up with a promising player doing nothing but causing disruption. By the things ive seen coming out of the club, Scott seems to have never have heard the word ‘respect’ – for the club & coaches that gave him his chance after he was so nearly dropped for dead by Paul Merson. From this side it looks as though an inflated ‘agent-knows-best’ ego could well have given rise to a monumental Kevin the Teenager moment… rock & a hard place isn’t it? We signed the kids to long contracts early on in order to force up ‘compensation’ – looks like it worked with ZiDann, but why try & hold on to him when he’s only going to sulk & give nothing to & for the good of the team?
Yup, its a gutter alright, but ‘Mr Loyalty’ Ian Roper can step up – maybe kick start his season – Manny Smith? We’ve seen what the young guns have done this season, so i’d have faith.
Sure, the squads thinner than Paris Hilton, reinforcements are desperately needed, but don’t write our season off just yet – this is what being a saddler is -and will always be – about.

A lot of valid points from Lee. No-body was more gutted than I was last weekend and ready to throw the towel in I guess. I didn’t give them a prayer at Carlisle after the events leading up to the match, but it would seem the better team lost. With a bit of luck we could have come away with all three points. Irrespective of who’s to blame re the Scott Dann saga, lets face it Bonser is never going to change. Now is the time to get behind the team again and let them see just what faithful and loyal band of supporters we are. I know it stings a little bit after all thats been said, but I think the team and Dicky D deserve it. Whatever people think of DD, his record speaks for itself, certainly with the budget, or rather lack of it, that he has had to work with. His hands have been tied ever since his arrival, but look what he has acheived. So come on, lets get behind him and show him that he is not fighting an uphill battle by himself after all. My only concern is just how long we are going to be able to keep him after this season. The way that managers are falling by the wayside in the divisions above us – somebody is going to have a look at him sooner or later and then he will probably leave for an “undisclosed fee”.
A good start would be three points next Saturday please Super Saddlers….

Lets get behind the team this saturday, I for one am going down. We were unlucky to lose to Carlisle, the team needs our support against Yeovil, we have to win especially with Swansea away coming up.

Now the last time I was negative on this forum anyone would have thought I had had a go at Mother Theresa herself and no doubt this has already been said, but…Chairman “beside himself” and Manager “doesnt know what to do” about “poor” gates at the Banks; sadly in this life we all get what we sow …eventually. Ropes will give everything for the cause as he has done for the last decade and anyone who has seen Manny Smith will know he is another tremendous prospect. Keep smiling !

We still have a great chance….come on you Super Reds! (&whites) I for one would locve to see Manny Smith back in contention, he did a great job at the end of last season……so so long Scott and Dan you ‘Foxed’ the club, but don’t forget we could well be playing you next season (many different combinations of that scenario!)and we know you very well!

I agree with Mark, time after time players are villanised by the club.

Keates, Westwood, Butler (All were villanised but had the same complaint about broken contract promises from the directors)

We all need to get behind the team but it is getting harder and harder by the day!
