Bully appeals for management chance
Saturday 2nd February 2008, 1:59PM GMT.
Wolves goalscoring legend Steve Bull today appealed to chairmen to give him a chance to kick off a career in management.
The club’s record goalscorer repeated his ambition to return to Molineux as manager.
But Bully told Sky’s Soccer AM he wants to serve a coaching and managerial apprenticeship before trying his luck with a big club.
“After being a footballer for 16 years I think I would be a good manager because I know what players want, inside out,” Bully said. “I’ve got a passion for it.”
And when asked whether he would like to manage Wolves, Bull said: “Yes, but you have to serve an apprenticeship first.
“You have got to start with non-League sides and go from there.”
He also called on a non-League chairman to give him a chance, saying: “I need a kick up the backside to get into management.”
Bully scored 306 goals for Wolves in all competitions and is regularly touted by fans as a potential Wolves manager when the Molineux hot-seat is vacant.
In a recent interview with the Express & Star he offered his help to Wolves’ strikers, who were struggling for goals at the time.
But so far his only coaching experience has been a brief spell on the backroom team at Hereford under ex-Wolves boss Graham Turner.
Bully has regularly given his backing to current Wolves manager Mick McCarthy, with whom he shared some blood-and-thunder battles during their playing days.
Bully, who has a UEFA ‘B’ coaching licence, said: “I’d love to be a strikers’ coach. I’ve always said – you can’t teach someone to score goals.
“But you can help them along the way and give them more hunger and determination.
“Wolves know I’d love to manage one day, although I don’t know whether Mr Morgan does.
“I’d love to do my apprenticeship under a top manager one day. If it doesn’t come, it doesn’t come.
“But I think Mick is still the man – I think he can still do it, I really do. He wasn’t far away last year and if he can strengthen this month, then he won’t be far away.
“Mick knows the players and knows how he wants his teams to play.”
Bully now runs his own company, Steve Bull enterprises.

Cant believe Bully aint been in the set up for the last few years, when you look at the clueless Connor surely somebody with the passion Bully brings to the club is a better option. Its no different to Newcastle fans wanting Shearer as part of the setup.

It really is up to Steve Bull himself! He has the reputation and he if he really wants it he should have no problem finder at least a non-league team he can manage maybe even a league 2 side. His Uefa B licence enables him to work with Academy players, and would probably be enough for a non-league side, but a professional club in the Premier or the Championshup would expect someone to have the A licence and the FA’s advanced coaching certificates before they appoint someone as a manager these days. He could probably achieve these once he is in management with a lower league side. But I get the feeling that Bully hasn’t pursued this as hard as he might have done.
Wolves could do him a favour here by offering him a coaching job so that he can get whatever experience and certification he needs to move into a management position elsewhere. He really needs to find a mentor to help him into management. This could be MM but he is under no obligation to help Bully. His focus is to get Wolves into the Premiership.
However, there are some Wolves backroom old boys at several lower league clubs and this is perhaps where Bully might find a position.
There might be a reason Bully can’t get into coaching and management but I wouldn’t want to suggest it on here given the man’s rightful status amongst Wolves supporters.

1 Laura wolves:
You have hit the nail on the head when you criticise Connor.
How he as out-lived so many managers is beyond my comprehension.

Why do people criticise Terry Connor? Do any of you actually know him personally? Are any of you aware of the kind of coach he is? It makes me laugh when people spout this uninformed nonsense. He must clearly be a decent coach to have survived at Wolves for as long as he has. I can’t see McCarthy, Hoddle or Jones keeping people on the payroll who were useless. As for Bully… great player, but has he really got the brain for management? I would like to see him work with our strikers, but I don’t think he has what it takes for out and out management.

you criticize people who have had a go at Connor and in the next breath you are criticizing Bully saying has he really got the brain for management do YOU actually know him personally? seems a bit hypocritical to me mate.

Steve Bruce is the odd man out.
He NEVER played for England!

Bully is owed a massive favour by Wolves, his loyalty will never be repeated.Trouble is,MM doesn’t owe Bully any favours and ultimately it will be MM’s decision. How Clipboard Connor is still here i’ll never know.Keith Downing could get him involved at Cheltenham, that would be a great start for him.

well said number 6. You dont stay in the job for as long as he has without doing something right. these people who slag off professionals don’t have a clue. See Jez Moxey as another example… excellent at his job, but doesnt get recognition from the majority of wolves fans.
90% of Wolves fans are clueless, they really are.

12 mr smug:
Are you Connor in disguise?

Moxey is a dick

Regardless how clueless Connor is he will never be as useless as Muppet Mick.

If anyone deserves an opportunity to be trained up it is Bully. He stayed with Wolves, and wanted to play for us at the top level, which ultimately cost him the opportunity of playing at the top level.
Train him up. let him get his coaching badges with us, and then it will be up to him to prove himself. But surely he is worth this investment.

Devonwolf he may well be a dick but he does his job well……there seem to be plenty of dicks who support Wolves who do the club no good at all…….

Come To Redditch United Steve!
Im looking for an assistant and I am sure you are better than Carl Heggs the former baggie.
If Bully really wanted to get into management he would have.

Yes can’t believe Bully hasn’t been given a chance by the club yet, where is their loyalty? As I have said for months now MM should be kicked out and Ince installed as boss and Bully as assistant. Only then will we have 11 players who will put themselves on the line for the club instead of just turning up for a shift and collecting their lucrative wage packets.

7. DaveWolf… You make a fair point. Perhaps I was hypocritical with my comments about Bully. However, it just gets on my nerves when people talk all this rubbish about Terry Connor as if they are experts in coaching and tactics. The guy is well thought of in the game and has been with Wolves for a long time. People never qualify their negative comments about him with any actual facts. They just call him ‘idiot Connor’ or ‘Clipboard’ – but never say what it is about him they don’t like. I’ve got a pretty good idea what it is people don’t like about him, but I won’t say it for fear of starting off a whole new debate.
At the end of the day I just hate fickle, uninformed, uneducated comments. Come on people – have your say, but try and back it up with facts and evidence. Don’t just slate people for the sake of it.

Keep away Steve, look what they did to John Richards.I have said it before and I will say it again, look at Stoke since Moxey left and compare that to the Wolves now!

moxey is main man

I would love to see it as long as it was nothing to do with the Albion, his motivational speech before the play off game made all the difference (to us), the language barrier may be a problem but im sure the players would understand him sooner or later.
Radio interviews may have to be done like Gerry Adams used to in the 80′s & 90′s though.

if bully gets a managers job, wolves’ PR team are gonna have a nightmare figuring who to wheel out at half time in order to cheer the fans up after another inept performance!!
the amount of times bully has to do ‘emergency crowd waving’ to cover mccarthy’s back is amazing.

Wolves Fans – Move on… Steve Bull was a good player, and a loyal person in your club, full stop.
Who REALLY cares for Bully now? The more you go on about it, the more desperate you all appear…

Remember Billy Wright a great player and good servant at Wolves.Do you remember Billy Wright good manager – of course not! Wouldn’t take anything away from Bully the great player but Bully the Manager! As for TC, great guy and yes I do know him.

Well who knows bully nxt wolves manager !!!!!!!!!!!
I do believe that how inconsistant our strikers have been that he can be a part of the striker coach role if possible and learn his trade along the way,
we havent really had another potential prolific scorer but id did think that proudlock would have fit the bill,
Lets give the man a chance as we did when he was banging in all those goals for us……..
