Injury setback for Wolves ace

Wolves winger Michael Kightly has suffered a fresh injury setback to his comeback plans.

The England under-21 man is definitely out of tomorrow’s Molineux clash with Sheffield Wednesday after breaking down in training and boss Mick McCarthy is now waiting to have the winger assessed.

Kightly was a late substitute in Saturday’s excellent 4-1 FA Cup win at Watford and appeared to be nearing full fitness again – but the injury relapse has dented his plans for a Championship comeback.

Join us for the cup draw from 1.30pm and have your say straight away

“Kites felt his ankle in training yesterday morning and he won’t be involved in the game,” McCarthy said.

“He had three minutes at Watford on Saturday and he was fine after that, but he felt some pain in his ankle yesterday. He had trained all week and he was terrific and we were pleased to get him on against Watford.

“But he trained for 20 minutes yesterday and felt his ankle. Until we get it seen we’re not sure why it happened – we’ll have to see whether it’s a reaction to him coming back and overloading himself or something else.”

Stephen Elliott has prospered on the right wing in Kightly’s absence and McCarthy is set to stick with the Irish international for the visit of the Owls tomorrow.

Elliott scored the second goal on Saturday and delighted the manager with another high energy performance from the wing.

“I know he can play there (on the right) – it’s not his favoured slot and I think he’d prefer to play up front, but he’d sooner play in midfield than on the wing,” said McCarthy. “He’s been excellent in both games and I was delighted for him.

“I don’t think his workrate as a striker was always appreciated from the outside, but inside the club we appreciate people who chase after full-backs and are a real nuisance for defenders.”

Damn – I must say I did question MM’s decision to throw him on at the end when it was unnecessary to do so, and unfortunately it has ended up costing us. Let’s hope it’s not another long spell on the sidelines for Kites… looking at the positives, we have now seen the ‘new Kites’ in Matt Jarvis – what a performance on Saturday!! Also, Stephen Elliot has looked good playing on the right, and with Edwards and SEB back for tomorrow night I think that 3 points could be coming our way. My only concern is that we never seem to beat Sheffield Weds at Molineux – it is usually a draw (with the occasional defeat) so a win is by no means guaranteed.

    People,

I have a bruised talus in my ankle and have been out for 2 and a half years!!!! What makes the Wolves physio think he is fine after only 2 months………??

Maybe it isnt as bad a bruise as mine but 2 months is no way long enough for bone to die and then reform which is what it has to do.

This could go on till the end of the season!!!!!!!!!

    Desperate shame for the lad,
he clearly wants to get back in contention as much as you fans want him to get back.
I cant help wondering if this is clouding his decision, and he is claiming to be 100% fit,
when deep down he knows differently.

Anyway good luck to the lad,
and lets hope he is back PROPERLY
    fit soon.

4, Wolfman just a lesson on football for you. We have by and large backed the team for the last few months and until the last week had nothing to show for it.
It’s the team and the team alone who can “come good”.
Unless you are Mad Mick in disguise and think that everytime we lose it’s the fans fault?

I am really sorry to hear about Kites he must be devistated, but I did say when he had the injection to go careful and not to try and get back too soon. Take it easy Kites get your ankle sorted and you will be back soon enough.

Good luck and keep your chin up.

    Fair play for comment mate.

Good to see Elliot doing well on right side. We need Kites 100% fit. No good playing 1 game then injured for 4.
Well done for Saturday lads and Keogh looked awesome.
Just the confidence boost he needs.

Bit harsh to blame MM or the Physio for an injury that according to the report he picked up in training – not during the last 3 minutes he played in the match on Saturday.

Before the weekend I posted a senario for your Watford game where Wolves were losing and MM throws Kightly on. Kites gets a goal but his ankle injury flairs up again and he misses loads of league games… seems I wasn’t a million miles off !

It was only a bit of fun and I would never wish injury on anyone.. genuinely hope he gets fit soon.

Maybe this is a way of getting through the transfer window without an offer from Everton or Villa, or maybe even Manure! Fergie is an admirer. I think we can only hope to keep this players for another season even if we go up.

They should take there time with him.

Also where the heck if Gobern?

Can’t wait to see Javis and Kites flying down both wings, we will go from a team who can’t score for toffee to dare I say albion’s scoring record in the division!

I think tomorrow will see Edwards for Potter and SEB for Bothroyd and maybe collins for Gray, apart from that the same team. That team has goals in it!

WolvesWolves are you a Baggie in disguise? All you ever do is come on here and berate Mick McCarthy. Most real fans are seeing a resurgence of the attacking play we saw last season. As for the fans “by and large” getting behind the lads, you are right. You are not one of those fans though. I’m sick of your bleating on about MM. Take a look at what Ferguson, Mowbray, Wenger, etc have said recently about how important the fans can be in lifting a team. (But then again, they’re only experts. What would they know when compared with your VAST experience.)

I played Rugby League in my younger days for one of the bigger teams. There were times when we were playing badly, and our heads began to drop a bit. To hear our crowd sing “When the red, red Robin…” ALWAYS lifted me no end. When they sang that, I would have run through brick walls for them, as would my team-mates. It reminded me of who I was representing. Boo boys jut help tired limbs and heavy heads to wilt further. They are about as much use as breaking wind in a space suit. It’s up to us as fans to get behind the team AND the manager.

22 – what part of “.. genuinely hope he gets fit soon”, is nasty ?

The original post was made following MMs decision to put Kites on the bench again for a cup game when you need him for the league.. it aint my fault your manager is risking your players by playing them when they should be rested.

It wasn’t pride that made me mention it – it was just ironic that i could see it happening.

Hope you don’t get a nose bleed on that morale high ground.

Happy, I don’t think you was being nasty. I don’t think MM was wrong to give him a quick little run out, as he is going to need to come in and gradually is better than waiting on and then putting him on in a more competitive atmosphere, rather than a game that was all but won, it was a situation ideal for bringing a player back from injury, he was just unfortunate. When he played him against Cambridge I can understand the criticism a little, but not in this situation.

    Just shut the cack up.

Just a lesson in football my aarrssee. Which is exactly the orifice you are talking out of.
Some of us who do understand football have backed, and will continue to back MM until at least the end of this season. You, however , haven’t. Seems you and your idiot minority just need to slag everything and everybody off regardless.
We have just had a 7 week bad spell…..every team has them from time to time, especially one with a couple of crucial injuries and 6 out of form players.
From starting with 10 full professionals, to where we are now has been interesting and exhilarating and sometimes downright fraustrating, but until we get a big enough squad with decent competition for ALL places like Albion , then we will always suffer when this sort of stuff happens. Aint MM’s fault, takes time to rebuild. Blame Hoddle if you need a scapegoat.
But meanwhile shut the cack up with them negative vibes man, cos we are all sick of them.
So don’t go and preach to us.

Sometimes we all get it wrong. HB is a wind up merchant of the top echelon, I can see why sometimes you lot get annoyed with him, after all that’s what he’s after. He is very funny but in my experience never malicious. I’ve known him berate other fans of both teams for nasty comments (especially regarding injuries.) Sometimes you will gain a lot more respect from your peers by admitting your wrong or if you can’t manage this then keeping quiet, remember the old saying ‘when you’re up to your neck stop digging.’ It’s up to you. All the best.
