FA Cup Fifth Round draw

Monday 28th January 2008, 1:17PM GMT.

West Midlands football results round-up

Wolves and Albion both face trips to Championship opposition in the FA Cup fifth round.

Wolves will tackle Dave Jones’s Cardiff City at Ninian Park and Albion have a Midlands derby with Coventry City at the Ricoh Arena.

The tie of the round is Manchester United v Arsenal at Old Trafford.

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy was taking a laid back approach to the draw which sees Wolves visit Ninian Park for a second time this season.

The Molineux men won the league game 3-2.

McCarthy said: “I actually missed the draw, so it was the lads who told me and judging by their reaction, it’s similar to the Watford game – a hard Cup tie in which we we just have to go there and do at our best.

“We’ve been there and beaten them already and although they have improved since, it is a chance of progress for us.”

Albion face Coventry for the third time this term. The two league meeting saw the Baggies run out 4-0 winners at the Ricoh Arena before the Sky Blues turned the tables, winning 4-2 at The Hawthorns.

Could have bben worse. Its definately winnable and we avoided a top 4 prem team.

Not a bad draw – would have been better at home but we can do this..

Very similar draw for wolves too – they will know thety can win it, but its probably a bit tougher than ours.

Lets hiope we both get through – I still want a cup derby game this year !

Great draw, like Happy said, its definatly winnable, I forgot about Cov and Chelsea and I was just waiting for Huddersfield to get paired up with us, but I’m happy with the draw. Bring on the Sky Blues, we’re out for blood this time.

Happier 7 – I know… think I’ve got a bad case of the “Witton Lakes” (shakes – very old rhyming slang from my youth). Not so much a spelling problem as a “hit the right key” problem.

    I promise to type slower…

TBH Any of the 4 sides involved in our matches has got to fancy their chances of a SEMI final really.

One of either Man Ure of The Arse is definately out, so that’s probably 3 of the 4 big’uns left, and with the other 4 teams in the Quarters being quite similar you’d fancy your chances.

I was expecting us to get Boro again (top and in the 5th Round) but alas no! :)

On the day itself my heart will be with the Albion, but my body (unfortunately) will be at Ninian Park as I’d already arranged a night out around our visit there on that day (before the FA Cup began!!)

However, watching the Dingles lose will more than make up for it!!

Possibilities that Wolves and/or albion will go through. The Wolves v Albion league game is on the weekend of the sixth round so looks like that might end up being an evening game. Maybe March 9th will be an FA Cup semi final between these teams instead.

Not an easy draw for either Albion or Wolves, but both sides have a decent opportunity to get through after we avoided the big boys. Both sides should have enough to progress but I would rather play Cov on current form than Cardiff (Huddersfield would have been better though!!!).

Hope both progress and with favourable reults and sixth round draw we may get to play each other in the semi-final for the chance to go to Wembley. That would be superb for both clubs and the Black Country.

what are the odds on robbo making the headlines again against the sky blues ? if the travelling fans can be as good as they were against p’boro then we will have a 12th man also. good draw and feel optimistic but anything can happen in the cup.

Not one “not bothered about the cup” comment so far… and thats great.

well if you given me cardiff 3rd or 4th round i would been so dissopointed, but given the cup draw one of the big 4 is defiantly going out! great news for us all

i think sheffutd have genuine chance of knocking out boro at home and this is the tie i wanted. pne could cause pompey trouble much how ipswich and plymouth have so far. so although i expect pompey to go through its not cut and dry

so on that i reckon 4prem teams from 1/4s we avoid them and baggies (as wouldnt want them personally) then we can reach semis although pompey and wba are winnable we just got to admit they both better than us!

so good draw in general and i expect least draw at cardiff

promotion 2 the promised land is definately the aim but for once a bit of optimism is doing us all good, its been a while since black country football has been so positive, preston 2morro is what I have my eye on so lets just keep the momentum going all the way to the premiership hopefully via wembley.

15% of that is 3056 fans, so lets not just accept 10% or whatever the league is

everyone seems to push us about in wba and manutd the other year. so lets be putting our foots down they have to give us that allocation i beleive.

TonyWBA – I would think Preston at home to Portsmouth will be one of the televised games. Premiership team visiting a lower league side is usually a favoured scenario.

I think at this stage of the competition this is a reasonable draw for both Wolves and Albion. Sure we would have preferred a home tie but it gives us a fair chance of progress.

    Bring it on!

Sorry, but i have to disagree with all of you, all i wanted from the draw was to not play another Championship team. If we had drawn Huddersfield or Bristol fine, or any of the prem sides, but Coventry. If we had drawn Wolves ok, but bloody Coventry, i know it is close by, and we will probably get 5000 tickets, and it is a good chance to get in the quarters, hang on……. ermmmm, yeh i am starting to come round to the idea, see you at the Ricoh!!!!!

I don’t think you will be far away
    with you`re TV Predictions mate.

To be fair Man U & Arsenal does have some credence,
as does Sheff u v Boro and
    Preston v Pompey
    potential upset and all.

However, i WOULD bet that the
    effective non events at Anfield
and the Bridge, get the nod.

Cast your mind back to last season
one of the worlds most fierce derbies, Wolves Albion was overlooked for the mouth watering
prospect of Chelsea at home to league 1 Forest.

Now if the well knowledge Mark Lawrence or Mr “Walkers” Lineker or any other of the BBC TV listings bods done their research they will find in 2 games West Brom v Coventry, there have been no less than 10 goals & 2 sendings off, now in my opinion that is entertainment.
But of course an all Championship game which is also a Derby game will be overlooked for the top 4 tussles. Shame really!

Am I dreaming this or did we play Coventry in the 5th or 6th round when we got to the semis in 1982? Bit of an anorak question but I’m sure someone will answer it.
Anyway, not a bad draw but Coventry will fancy it too, having beaten us at home. Wolves have managed to get the one team I wanted to avoid. Could still be a Black Country-Staffs final.

Lets avoid prem top 4 and each other till as late as possible. Let them knock each other out and be the latest lower division team to win the cup.. last one was 1980 and its been too long.

Theres only 3 of 7 games where you’d want to avoid playing the winner all the others are so winnable a championship team can actually go to wembley. Hope we draw wolves in quater final!
