Popular club closes

A popular Wolverhampton city centre nightclub has closed its doors suddenly, creating another derelict eyesore on one of the city’s main gateways.

Windows at Pop World, in Lichfield Street, have been boarded up following the shock closure – the second attraction left vacant after calling last orders in the same street.

The bright red signs are still in place at the 270-capacity venue, which was opened in a blaze of glory two years ago in the former Flares building following a £500,000 refurbishment.

It was open seven days a week and, being billed as “the place to dance the night away” to cheesy pop music from the 70s, 80s, 90s, attracted hundreds of revellers each week.

It opened complete with illuminated dancefloor following a devastating arson attack at Flares left the building a smouldering shell.

Lee Paddock, Wolverhampton City Centre Manager, said he hoped the venue would be re-opened soon.

When local dignitaries were trumpeting the “new” industry which would be the “saving” of the local economy I warned they should not put all their egss in a drink sodden basket.

It is no pleasure to find myself proved right but since it was such an obvious conclusion to draw I despair that local politicans, planners et al were so blind.

Nightspots come and go. It’s natural. If it were anything else we’d still all be having a knees up in the Valhalla, Lichfield Street on a Saturday night!

Word is that the landlord of Flares was upping the rent dramatically. As a result, Flares have got out rather than pay up. O’Neill’s closed down a few years ago for exactly the same reason. Both are owned by M&B.
