Villa blog: Super Marlon
Tuesday 22nd January 2008, 8:43AM GMT.
What can I say? I was one of many Villa fans to have written off Marlon Harewood, but didn’t he make a difference against Liverpool? writes Villa blogger Gregg Williams.
If Torres had scored that overhead kick the national media would have been falling over themselves to praise him.
And Marlon deserves a lot of credit for the way he took the goal, injected some much needed urgency into our play, and rallied the troops when required.
I’m pleased for him, and I can only hope that was a sign of things to come.
He took a lot of stick for his part in the draw at White Hart Lane, but i’ll have to take my comments back if he shows the same commitment, desire and ability in future.
Without the influence of Gareth Barry in midfield, I thought our perfomance was more disjointed than we’ve come to expect over the past few months.
Petrov and Reo-Coker in the middle didn’t really gel and we struggled to keep the ball.
At the same time it’s hard to be too critical when we’ve drawn at Anfield, a ground where we always struggle.
Cracks are starting to appear in the squad, with Barry out we have no full-back cover, Ashley Young will miss the Fulham away game through suspension, and Gabby Agbonlahor looks in need of a rest.
I really hope we are able to bring in two or three new faces before the transfer window closes, because that could be the difference between Europe and mid table.
As for the race for fourth place, I can’t rule it out but it would take a massive effort from the players, probably a win in every remaining home game and at least a point at Goodison Park, with the odd win away from home picked up until May.
For now we can reflect on another job done, and enjoy a few replays of Super Marlon’s super goal.

Watched the match last night, very disapointed in the performance of Petrov. Thought he was slow, lacked the fire in his belly. Maybe one of MON’S only mistakes with signings. I was very hopeful when we bought him and gave him the benefit of the doubt for months when all around me were critising him. We are certainly in desperate need of two or three new faces if we are going to make a genuine push for europe..Lets hope MON has something up his sleeve. Well done Marlon Harewood…you certainly shut me up..
Last comment, give Gabby a break and relace him with Marlon for a few weeks.
See you all at Fulham on the 3rd of Feb.

What a fantastic goal. Didn’t know he had it in him!

It is very evident that villa rely on 6 or so players. We have lost 1 player and we are out of shape. Yes the result is brilliant and could have been 1 better, but villa were really poor for most the game. They couldn’t string a pass together in the first half. Marlon Harewood was a revelation when he came on, you could see the passion in his eyes (fairplay). Villa need a defender, and a midfielder as i feel gardner is not villa class

i am so pleased for Harewood, who i have doubted in the past, but he came on and his presence, and physicall nature really upset the kopites, and his goal was well taken.
Terry i agree, I think Gabby has been trying too hard recently, with a new england manager, he just needs a rest, Harewood look strong, composed and full of confidence, so why not give a few games, give gabby a rest,
we could have the striker we have been missing in Harewood, maybe! Lets give him a run out, a few home games, Blackburn at home, Fulham away, i think its well worth a try!
