Eastwood begs for Wolves chance
Friday 18th January 2008, 11:29AM GMT.
Fed-up Freddy Eastwood is begging boss Mick McCarthy to believe in him – and give him a fair crack of the whip at Wolves.
Eastwood today revealed for the first time his mounting frustration at being overlooked in Wolves’ strikers battle for places.
The 24-year-old’s Wolves career has stalled since a spectacular August saw him named Championship Player of the Month after five goals in his first four games for club and country.
Since then, Eastwood and Wolves have ground to a halt with McCarthy running the gauntlet of supporter criticism for his reluctance to give his prize signing of the summer an extended run.

The Welsh international, who again looks set for the subs bench at Scunthorpe tomorrow, last week saw the Wolves boss pay another seven-figure fee for a striker in bringing Sylvan Ebanks-Blake to the club leaving Eastwood as far from a starting place as ever.
But the forward, who still enjoys the backing of the Molineux faithful, believes he could prove himself one of the division’s top scorers with “a run in the team.”
Eastwood says: “Without doubt I think that. The last two times I’ve come off the bench against Cambridge and Palace and I thought I did well and deserve a start now.
“Whether the manager thinks so is probably a different thing and I probably won’t get a start again this weekend. I don’t really think I’ve had a great chance.

“I’ve played a game, been dropped again and then four weeks later played another game and then come off the bench twice.
“I think if I could get a run in the team I’d be consistent because I’ve scored goals at any level I’ve played.”
Eastwood competes with Keogh, Bothroyd and Stephen Elliott for a chance to partner Ebanks-Blake as Wolves go to Scunthorpe looking to start a reversal in fortune.

For God’s sake Mick put him in, the guy wants to play for us. He only needs one, he won’t stop scoring after that…unless Mick drops him.
Too right.
Give the bloke a chance, this guy could score goals for fun, has is was in August. Give him a chance with Blake and get Jay off. I believe along with may Wolves fans that eastwood could become one of the best strikers the club as seen (apart from Bully, who is a god). So come on Mick give Fred a chance, you can’t be any worse off, and at least the fans will back that decision.
Play him or lose him !! Freddie isn’t going to want to hang around if he’s not playing – especially as there’s no reason for him not to play. Get that waster Bothroyd off the pitch and out of Wolves altogether. How the hell MM can play this man (?) when he’s such a waster and does nothing positive for the side.
he has more shots, and decent shots at that, and looks more a threat when he comes on as a sub than any of the starting strikers ever do. he should start every game. micks lost the plot big time!
Absolutely agree Freddy. Any one with half a brain can see that you deserve a starting place.
Your record when you had a run at the start of the season speaks for itself.
If you were to miss from six yards, ala Ward, Bothroyd & Keogh, then perhaps we, as fans would have a moan but as it is, you constantly look for the ball to either link the play or have that much needed thing in football, shots at goal.
We believe in you even if MM doesn’t. You will prove him wrong when he’s not the manager next season. Just hope you stick with us until then, rather than go anywhere else.
At the minute though, we couldn’t blame you if you did.
MM will play Jay & Elliott tomorrow with S Ward on the wing and our best striker will be on the bench FE, just to wind us all up you watch.
Mick give Freddy ago tomorrow at Scunthorpe, play him along Ebanks-Blake.
Just read on the Wolves web site that Stephen Ward has been given a contract extension until 2011, cannot see what he has done to get that!
Listen to Eastwood for once Mick!! If you bring him on as a sub and plays well for 2 games then i think he deserves a start! dont you??
I agree Eastwood and Blake to start.
How Jay got man of the match last Saturday is beyond me.
COME ON MM PLAY HIM JUS GIVE HIM A RUN IN THE TEAM BOTHROYD HAS PLAYED HOW MANY GAMES ON THE TROT DELIVERED NOTHING SO GIVE FREDDY HIS CHANCE!!!!! KEOGH ON THE RIGHT 2MORA JARVIS ON THE LEFT LETS JUST BE BRAVE AND GO FOR IT!!!!!! COME ON WOLVES!!!!!!!!
Mick, stop digging your heals in, play Freddie and save your job.Do that and in weeks we’ll be back in the play off places, people will again sing “Super Mick” and your mid-life crisis of the last couple of months will be forgotten. It would be a shame to lose your job over not playing one man.
Mick is being hypercritical again, he expects the fans to give him time to prove himself but wont give Freddy time to score goals. He should be told that barring an injury he will play the next 5 games for the full 90mins. This should ease the pressure on him and give him a chance to prove to us what we all know he can do score goals.
I BACK MM IN EVERYTHING BUT THIS IS WHERE I BACK THE PLAYER! FREDDY IS THE MOST TALENTED PLAYER WE HAVE AND LOOKS LIKE SCORING MORE THAN ANY OTHER STRIKER WE HAVE! IN THEORY IF FREDDY AND EBANKS BLAKE PLAY UP FRONT TOGETHER WE SHOULD SCORE SHED LOADS EVERY GAME! ATLEAST MM SHOULD EXPLAIN WHY HE AINT PLAYING HIM SO WE ALL KNOW WHY!! IF FREDDY LEAVES ID BE VERY UPSET TO SEE HIM GO
Report abuse
Agree with that 100%
Report abuse
Seems like Freddy won’t play tomorrow if the rumour is true, he is off to Norwich for £800,000?
Unconfirmed but Glenn Roeder is waiting for confirmation of 2 players to sign up, will 1 of them be Freddy?
Would like to see FE given a chance now. Lets not forget though, he originally asked to be rested and did hear that it was his attitude that held him back (upsetting a few players). It is time for another go though. FE and SEB please.

Because he can run, run, run for Ireland!
Sorry, wash my mouth out with soap and water, what a racist cad I am!
Mad Mick forever!
give him his chance Mick!
It’s about time the players started questioning Sideshow-Bob’s tactics and team selections.
Careful Freddie, you may up playing left-back in more ways than one.
MM set out his stall by naming his preffered strike force pairing early doors (Elliott & Keogh) Which was a very bad mistake and not something any manager should do – especially when Freddie was banging goals in and then gets overlooked in favour of Elliott and Keogh
Now we have an abundance of strikers at the club – Ebanks Blake, Eastwood, Elliott, Bothroyd, Keogh, eh S Ward (Is he a striker or left wing?)
Is MM going to maintain his stubborn mindedness and keep selecting anyone ahead of Freddie? If so, why not just sell him and maybe buy a centre half with some pace?
Giving Freddie small amounts of time as sub is not the answer – the lad scored 20 goals in a poor Southend side and could do the same for us – BUT MM has dished out the MM treatment – just like he did with Dennis Irwin and Roy Keane
These players would thrive in any other side in this league – BUT MM is not going to budge in our view
How can anyone have faith in someone who drops a striker when he has scored goals and then makes sure that the world knows that he doesnt like him or want him in the first eleven? It beggers belief and makes about as much sense as a chocolate fireguard!
How many more defeats and mind numbing draws do we have to put up with???
Seems like old news, but whenever Bully had a brief drought he was never dropped, England never dropped Shearer and so why is Eastwood dumped at the first sign of a bad run?
Does anyone remember The Muppet Show on TV? When it first hit the screens it was a breath of fresh air and everyone loved it.
But, over time. its lack of plot and constant recycling of the same old jokes made it boring and tired. Inevitably, with viewing figures dwindling badly, the show was quietly axed.
The Muppet Show at the Mol. lacks only a miss Piggy doing something unspeakable to Kermit.
Sadly Freddie you are on the way to Norwich. Good luck!!
The problemm with MM is he seems to hold grudges given a chance playing in the right position Freddy will score lots of goals just look at his record before joining us even Drogba would struggle with Mick as manager
Report abuse
if he can give bothroyd a run in the team when he is lazy and doesn’t contribute anything to the team surely eastwood deserves his chance give him at least 5-6 games to see what he does if he doesnt play well he cant say he hasnt had a fair crack can he. COME ON MICK GIV THE BOY A CHANCE
Report abuse
we got to change things around i think….
i quite liked jay, but seeing his recent performances i think he needs to be dropped!
freddy and ebanks up front, with keogh and javis on the wings… henry playing his natural holding position and david edwards attacking midfield… i imagine the defensive will not change much..
just a shame davis and gibson have been injured for so long…. hope they get back soon!
COME ON YOU WOLVES!!
ps why give ward a new contract? surely we need to get rid of some players? big squad know!
where did you hear the rumor about freddy going to Norwich from??
havent heard about that till now
Report abuse
get eastwood in ffs mick !
cant believe ste wards been given a new deal its an absolute disgrace !
the final nail in mcarthy coffin at wolves for me
mcarthy for the sack asap
Report abuse
Where did you hear the rumor about Freddy going to Norwich??
i hadnt heard about that until now,
Freddy and Blake upfront tomorrow!
I am still boiling at MM comments. He needs to understand we don’t support him, we support Wolves, he is not and never will be Wolves. Let’s do a Newcastle and bring Dave Jones back but this time back him. Looking forward to a 3-0 win tomorrow.
Where did you hear the rumor about Freddy going to Norwich??
i hadnt heard about that until now,
Freddy and Blake upfront tomorrow
Report abuse
Im really starting to think theres a personal problem between freddy and Mick. Freddy is by far our best striker but he hasnt had a chance like the rest of the forwards. Mick has got his ”favourites” and i can see Eastwood leaving soon…….
Freddie wants to play for wolves, he up sticks from southend to come and play for us, so I bet you MM will drop him from the 16 and blast him in training to say” I’m the boss and you get picked if you put a shift in” Not been funny but you can all see why Roy Keane had a fit in the world cup if this is what MM does to players.
And another thing Stephen Ward gets a new contract. WHAT A LOAD OF RUBBISH!
MM OUT!
begging to get away more like it
Report abuse
At the end of the day, if you put the graft in at training and take your chances when you get them you play.
It’s not like he’s not been playing at all. And lets be honest in some of the games he’s started he’s been fairly non-existent.
Unfortunately we’re no longer in a position to give a mis-firing forward a few games so he can get a goal.
We need our forwards to be scoring now and frequently. He may well be frustrated but not as much as we are watching our team scoring once in a blue moon.
If he comes off the bench and scores MM will have no option but he ain’t doing it. My response would be, we’re frustrated too Fred but if you’re on the bench, come on and get us a goal and get your place in the team
Report abuse
Play the 2 New boys up front.
Eastwood and Ebanks-Blake.
Give these pair a run,
Bothroyd needs to go (preferably to the baggies) because he is truly rubbish.
Weve paid a lot of cash for these pair, so play them. I think that promotion is not for us this season.
MM, the fans will back you if you get results & get the playes to be proud to wear the shirt.
We pay a lot of money to watch wolves home and away, so dont grumble obout us showing our opinions.
cmon mick give him a bloody chance, we can’t score goals and youv’e got a ready made hungry forward who wants to score. This is one of the factors in a lot of the fans getting on your back because you are a very stubborn manager who for some reason cannot see the answer when its staring him in the face.
do it now or another backlash may follow
Report abuse
Please give Freddie a chance! He scored for fun for Southend even when they were so piss poor in the Championship. Pick him over Jay (falls down) Bothroyd any day of the week, if Wolves are selling anyone in January please God let it be Jay!
Got a feeling Keogh will start with Ebanks-Blake tomorrow (who has probably been given first team assurances) – Old club and all that… though I agree Sylvan and Freddy would be my “away” line up (The ability to create a goal from nothing at all and blistering pace).
Lincswolf – spot on; Eastwood has started only 10 league matches; 4 in 6 matches up to 18 September with 4 goals and 6 in 21 matches since and only once in those 21 matches has he started two in a row
Report abuse
Put him out there and put faith in him. If he doesn’t score in his first full match it doesn’t matter. Just play him, he will begin to get the goals. He’s the only striker we have that gets the ball on target consistently rather than blazing wide or high. If he keeps doing this then the keeper can’t stop them all.
Strikers thrive on confidence. Once Freddy gets a goal then he’ll get more right away. His sub appearances in the last few matches show he’s what we are missing. He is far and away the best striker at the club.
Let him play with Jarvis on the wing to give some pace down the flank and we will be a different side. I reckon Freddy and SEB might make a good pairing. SEB is strong and can hold up play and Freddy can turn and shoot from almost anywhere. They could feed off each other if they have the chance to form an understanding.
ROB bothroyd would score goals in our team we create chance after chance even the old lolly pop man up the road from me could score goals. It is going to be impossible to select a goal of the season and the goals dvd will have to be a double. The goal machine is going up in style.
Freddy should be given a proper run out. If he leaves, I can see him doing a Phillips onus when we least need it. I’m an old bugger and I know a good striker when I see one and Freddy has it at this level. Must be played!
The single biggest reason why i really dislike mick. all summed up in one E&S article
Freddy In !!!!
Mccarthy OUT !!!!!!!!
What have we got to lose…
Eastwood and Efires-Blanks (joke!) up front…
Keogh on in the 2nd half to see them off.
Coomonmebabbies!
it says “The Welsh international, who again looks set for the subs bench at Scunthorpe tomorrow”
so who going to start with s.e.b
bothroyd – god help us
keogh – well effort there, but he wont score!
oh hang on people think into it a bit more, edwards will come in left wing
meaning STEPHEN WARD up front!!! yay! NOT!!
freddy is half reason mick should go, scoring for fun and mick was worried it was going to backfire as mick wanted sharp in
for flip sake
play s.e.b & freddy for 6-7games – if they dont score or look threating fair enough, but elliot and bothroyd goes match after match without a goal but still get in. when we lose its freddys fault then he sub for next 8games
i remember getting restless at plymouth away with mick not bringing on freddy looking back that was 29th september 2007
4months ago and still thick mick doesnt realise he is the best out of the bunch
Report abuse
micks just had the pro zone stats in from the big race.
Eastword was second as he was only on for the last lap, Bothroyd had a fast first lap but then gave up for the rest of the race, murry got injured getting into the car, henry and potters car would only go from side to side, and every body wend past ward and collins.
COME ON MICK SORT IT OUT PAL AND PLAY EASTWOOD.
Oh, I forgot to say,
WHY HAS STEPHEN WARD BEEN GIVEN A NEW CONTRACT?
We can’t give a quality striker like Freddy the chance to settle in but we stick that muppet on the pitch every week. He’s done nothing and isn’t fit to wear the shirt.
I’ve got to question MM’s team choice although I have to say, I beleive in stability and always use Reading as an example, when we thrashed them (4-1 I think) home and away the season before their promotion. They thrashed us home and away with the reverse score line in their promotion season and they had exactly the same team. They were given time to galvanise.
The problem I see with MM is that he still does not have a settled first 11, and sticks with players like the awful S Ward game in game out. The last game that I watched was against Sheff Utd and S Ward could not even control the ball. At one point the ball was put over and his control was shocking and he couldn’t even control it and it rolled out of play for a goal kick.
I do hope that Eastwood plays Saturday, but MM clearly does not like him and only puts him on to appease the fans to chase games.
The E&S have now definately given MM a reason not to play Eastwood now for being outspoken against him. NICE ONE E&S, GREAT thinking with that story! NOT!
A dissilusioned season ticket holder.
I’ve read the Norwich rumour too – supposedly to be announced later today. It’ll be another nail in MM coffin as far as the fans are concerned if he does go there – 800k is the fee being quoted – just watch him bang the goals in for them.
this I think is the end for FE I really feel sorry for him
MM has turned a Good player into crap, yet he his trying to turn Crap SW into even worse crap this lad might be a nice Guy but no way his he a League footballer, However he his MM best ever signing, this club are becoming a joke I am sure that SW must be MM long lost son
Report abuse
Looking at the `Your shout` area `up top` this proves that a good proportion, 20%, of people on this site know little about football. I really wonder how many of us have actually played and managed teams in a successful manner. Many I’m sure as many comments show insight. But there is a fair amount of negative rubbish at times. Out of darkness cometh light.

ward wears the same cologne as breen.
maybe Freddy should make a purchase.
we’ll go nowhere with mick’s team selections

baggie9:
bothroyd wouldn’t score goals for sandwell town he has never been a prolific scorer wherever he as played.
oh sorry i forgot sandwell town are superior to everyone at the moment(?)
IT’S AN ABSOLUTE JOKE THAT BOTHROYD GETS PICKED OVER HIM. HE’S BY FAR OUR BEST STRIKER, FREDDY AND EBANKS-BLAKE TO START. C’MON MICK!
Freddy,
One of your biggest mistakes was finding welsh heritage, you should have looked a little harder to see if you had any Irish in you!
MM
This man was a proven scorer who has not been given a fair crack, play him and Sylvan but sort the midfield out, maybe on the journey up the driver could take a diversion up the M6 and drop Gibson off at Manchester and leave him there
Come on Wanderers, there’s still time to turn things round!!!!!
I agree, Freddie needs a run – he needs to be believed in.
I cant believe how Mick has ballsed this up, and he doesnt seem to want to change it.
Stephen Ward is a good player 48, a real poacher – he has been played out of position. We should be appreciating how well he has done out there, not criticising him. He needs to play up the middle.
41 Wet Wolf.
Absolutely correct! Play these two up front for the next 5 games. We have nothing to lose and I know what would happen. GOALS. These two score and have nothing to prove to me.
is there anyway we can get the club to explain why he aint playing??? its getting silly now! a potential top scorer in the league who started really well and had a bit of a low patch MM said that they had gotten over the whole situation yet he still wont play him from the start! when he comes on he looks very dangerous!
Freddie, nearly every fan wants to see you get that run in the team and bang in the goals we know you can get but I think this interview has probably killed any chance if MM is as pig headed as usual

Mick Mac paddy wack.
Give freddy a chance !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did Mick see Freddy play before he bought him? He is a Michael Owen type player who might be non-existant for 88 minutes but can do what counts. We are a dull and pedestrian team at present. We were breathing fire last year but this year you have knocked the stuffing out of our team. It is utterly pointless playing Ward on the wing because every move breaks down. Jay has lost the plot after I thought, showing a bit of class early on. It must be a sham to say that everyone is all happy and jolly at the Mol, we know Freddy isn’t happy and most of the players look unsettled and unsure of themselves on the pitch.
Cmon Mick show a bit of faith and spirit in your team selections. All your negative comments all the time like oo-er Scunthorpe are going to be really hard to beat. Why??? We should be going up there with an attacking format and batter the life out of them. We all believe it’s possible so why don’t you?
there is a mental block with FE from MM…he perseveres with Jay and Keogh when neither are natural goalscorers.

You know that I am a big fan of Mick. However, I must admit that I believe FE has been doing better than Bothroyd lately. I would play him before Bothroyd.
MM can consider himself very lucky to have been given the money to sign Ebanks Blake when his summer signing Eastwood has not been given a fair chance.
How Bothroyd keeps getting picked ahead of Freddie is beyond me. I wonder how many Wolves fans know that Jay’s professional career has now lasted 7 years during which time he has scored a total of 39 goals. Eastwood has been a professional for half that time and has scored twice as many goals.
How those kind of facts can be ignored when it comes to team selection is incredible. Particularly when the team in question has only scored 8 goals in its last 15 games.
Bye Bye Freddie, and good luck!

Last year Freddy scored 16 goals for a team that was relegated! What could he do if he was given a serious run in the team now! Come on McCarthy forget wahtever grudge you’ve got and play him!

I cant understand why Eastwood is not getting a run in the team, it beggers belief.
It makes you wonder that if MM had been manager during the late 80′s and 90′s we may never have known what a certain Steve Bull was capable of!!! Think about that MM !! I know you read this pages so why not take note of whats being said.

A well balanced team. Cannot argue with that. If that team was picked you would look forward to the match and if it lost you know you would be entertained. Watched Keegan’s press conference. `What these fans want after a week at work is to be entertained`. If Wolves were 4 points off the play offs and playing attacking football I don’t think anyone would be moaning. Don’t believe in making players scapegoats for frustration though and am still waiting to hear what booing your own players achieves. Will a similar team to ed wolf’s be picked? His choices display great insight. If Freddy has committed some unspeakable act, forgive my opinion.
blake up front with his pace and can acctually get into the six yard box for tap ins which we have missed all season and freddy because he can shoot from outside the box and get em on target but they have got to have a good run of games because its a waste of time just giving em a couple of games this partnership will flourish and cant do any worse than what the others have been doing so cmon mick give em a go
Report abuse
i actually hope SEB doesn’t start scoring soon cus he’ll end up on the transfer list probably!! At first it was funny how mick was blind to every bad decision he made..but now he’s been serious i thought he was joking!! i mean elliot? ward (both) collins? elliot? potter? bothroyd?? im just sooo confused??

Apparently MM has written to the ole fat fella at the FA asking if his proposal of having the subs increased to 20 will be voted in soon, so he can play his entire squad in one game!!!!!! Luv2all my bro´s.. from Mallorca, keep smiling, come on you WOLVES.
Adios….
To Mick’s credit I think he’s assembled a pretty good squad…but please Mick stop being so stubborn in how you choose to use it.
Just cause virtually EVERYONE want’s Freddy to play, & most want Rosa…THIS IS NOT A JUSTIFIABLE REASON FOR NOT PLAYING THEM.
What are you scared of? Do you think people will think you’ve gone soft?
A GOOD IDEA IS A GOOD IDEA regarless of which 20,000 people thought of it first.
So what the worst that can happen?
If you mix things up & it works then great…you can spin how it was you’re masterplan if you want. If it doesn’t work…then at least you’ll be respected for being open minded & maybe win back some of the, err “10%” that don’t like your management.

Keogh score the only thing he can do is freeze up when its him and the goalie

Not playing Freddy is such a blatent snub of the fans that it only gives the boo boys more ammunition. Chants of ‘Freddy, Freddy, Freddy’ are obviously demoralising to the strikers on the pitch.
Play Freddy from the start & everyone will be more supportive. How Freddy performs is largely irrelevant as the team will play more confidently in a supportive atmosphere.
You know it makes sense!
