Albion open defender contract talks

Friday 18th January 2008, 11:28AM GMT.

Martin AlbrechtsenAlbion will open contract talks with Martin Albrechtsen this week over extending his Hawthorns career – and Scottish winger Graeme Dorrans is due for a trial.

The Baggies are also planning contract negotiations with goalkeeper Dean Kiely next week, when Dorrans is due to arrive for training as the transfer window hots up at The Hawthorns.

Manager Tony Mowbray has confirmed the club will speak to fit-again Albrechtsen’s agent in the coming days to try to strike a agreement over a new contract for the Dane, although the Baggies boss has warned that a deal might not be easy.

“This week there will be some conversations with Martin’s advisors and we’ll see what develops from there,” said Mowbray.

“We are aware of his contractual situation. When players get to this stage the future is very much in their hands

“We will have conversations and see what happens. If there is a willingness from both sides then great.”

Both Albrechtsen and Kiely are out of contract at the end of the season and Mowbray has confirmed that talks have begun with 37-year-old Kiely.

Livingston winger Dorrans, aged 20, will check in next week to train with the Baggies but reports that he has already agreed a loan move are said to be wide of the mark.

He has hit nine goals this season and Livingston are willing to let him leave with Rangers, Middlesbrough and Dundee United also said to be interested.

Talks are continuing with the advisors of on-loan striker Ishmael Miller over a possible permanent deal.

The Baggies have a deal in place with Manchester City to sign Miller but they must persuade the 20-year-old to sign before the end of January or risk City raising the asking price in the summer.

“Nothing has changed,” said Mowbray. “We are obviously conscious of the time factor – I would have hoped we had something to report but if we don’t and this month disappears then nothing will change.”

Meanwhile, young striker Stuart Nicholson has joined former Baggies manager Brian Little at Wrexham for a month’s loan but Mowbray has had no enquiries yet for Neil Clement, who he is keen to send out on loan for match action.

With TM in charge you just get the feeling that everything is gonna be ok – players may be coming to the end of their contracts – but its ok… loan players haven’t signed yet – but its ok….

TM just has a way of giving us confidence – and you just KNOW that he will get the players he wants – and every new signing will be a good un too.

Players ENJOY playing for the gaffer – and he gets the very best out of them – without all the hype and headlines that “other” teams have. So come on Albre and Miller (and Zolly etc..) – sign now before TM gets fed up of waiting, this is THE place to be.

God forbid I should ever say “in TM I trust” – but I’m VERY pleased he is in charge of my club.

    LOVIN IT !

Miller needs to sort himself out. Hasn’t really been putting in the performances he was before injury; teams are reading his movement better and once or twice he has let his ego force him into poor decision making. Football is a team game and we have had enough of prima donnas at the Hawthornes. Has real potential, but the attitude and commitment needs to be there.

If you watch Miller and Tex, both are classy on the ball, neither knows quite when to let go a pass, so the defences know that the second or third tackle will win the ball back. If they passed one, dribbled one and varied their game, both would be less predictable. If your play is predictable in this league or the Prem., you’ll get nowhere. That, in my opinion, is why neither of these has left us yet for bigger clubs.
