Morgan backs Mick’s Premier bid

Wednesday 16th January 2008, 11:37AM GMT.

Wolves manager Mick McCarthyWolves owner Steve Morgan has told Mick McCarthy: “We’re going to the Premiership together.”

McCarthy has come under growing pressure from fans frustrated at Wolves’ eight-match winless run and their record as the lowest scorers in the Championship. But McCarthy came out fighting as he said: “Steve wants success with Wolves with me in charge. And he’s been really supportive.

“My relationship with Steve and Jez (Moxey) has always been one which has been very supportive.

“I don’t need to speculate on anything else, there’s no reason to.”

“I don’t need to speculate on anything else, there’s no reason to.”McCarthy was in bullish mood as he responded to Morgan’s reassuring quotes in a business magazine where he stressed the success of his Redrow property business had been achieved by staying loyal to key staff.

“Steve’s thoughts since he came in have always been that he wants to be successful, with himself, Jez and me running the place, and that hasn’t changed,” said the boss.

“It’s a sensible approach to keep people in place for long periods and it’s been proven that it works.”

McCarthy added: “Showing faith in people when they’re doing well is a piece of cake, an absolute doddle. Having faith in people when they’re not doing so well is a little bit more difficult.

“Perhaps football is the worst place to be for that sort of thing and it’s amazing how quickly things change around.

“What I would say is that hasn’t changed around with Steve, Jez or with people in the club. David Moyes epitomises it for me with the recent managers who have come under pressure. Everton went from seventh to 17th under ‘Moyesey’ and there were question marks about him but now he’s one of the best managers in the country.

“It’s strange because he was one of the best when they finished seventh and then he was no good when they finished 17th – what a pile of nonsense that turned out to be.

“I always take a pragmatic view on it. It doesn’t change me as a person or as a manager and coach. I try to maintain that same equilibrium.”

Mick has lost the support of a lot of the fans. He is sending out a team that doesn’t create many chances or score many goals. He has gone through a run that has seen Wolves slip from being contenders for automatic promotion to being outsiders for the play offs.
If he could only persuade himself to adopt a more positive style of play built around the likes of Ebanks Blake, Eastwood, Keogh, Kightly, Jarvis, Davies I think he could solve all of those issues in one go.

We got lucky last year and had very few injury problems, this year we lost Kites, Craddock and Breen, three of our most influential players. As long as Morgan gives the type of money we have been promised and we sign quality we will get in the playoffs then its all in our hands. If we all remember Manchester United were on the brink of sacking a certain Alex Ferguson after three years without giving them a trophy. But luck turned in his favour when United won the FA Cup against Brighton and this after a replay. Since then we all know what happened so much so that he has been declared the greatest manager of all time in English football.

Hm, I would have thought they would be better off at Compton doing abit more shooting practice, tackling practice, passing practice and pretty much any type of practice that improves the football they dish up, and not out enjoying themselves mid week. This just proves to me they don’t give a damn, and niether do the club for arranging it and giving them the time off.

I know for a fact that if I was as bad at my job my boss wouldn’t send me carting as a thankyou!!! Pathetic.

However, lets look for a moment at this ‘very supportive’ senior management, where is the leadership, why all this blame the manager, the players and the fans !

There are some, who dont want to take any kind of responsibility, for the current mess or anything else, yet they continue to stay in their comfortable jobs and not be accountable.

We need a clear out of this senior management and get some real leadership in the club.

MM picks the team and he decides on the style of play. The fact that we are the lowest scorers in the league this year, struggled to score many last year either, Sunderland were relegated from the Prem cause they couldn’t score goals, Ireland couldn’t score goals. If all that is down to bad luck then I reckon we have grounds for sacking MM cause he is unlucky. Truth is that he is a manager who focuses on not conceding goals and 1-0 wins is as good as it gets under him.

The play off’s are not imposible, but are improbable. Normally, a team requires 75 points to be certain although it has been known for a team to sneak in with 71 or 72 points. So, in my book that means Wolves require at LEAST 12 wins from the last 19 games. That is a tall order when you consider the record of 9 wins from 27 so far. Stranger things have happened, but I agree with an earlier poster who indicated that a team needs to be scoring goals in order to win games. Personally, i’ll be relieved when Wolves have achieved 53 points (6 more wins), in which case we won’t go down! As for MM, well let’s give him until the end of the season and see where we are.

    62. Sorry but that’s nonsense. I manage a company and have excellent Manager’s and staff. If I told the Sales Manager to manage the IT Section the company would be in serious trouble. Players must play to their strengths, play them out of position and they will look inept. MM is not a good tactitian and buying a whole new squad will not change that, I am convinced he has thought of playing Hennesey up front. I was getting real upset before Christmas, now I do not care as the season is over and I can happily sit back and watch a lunatic at work. Morgan is binding his time until his choice for Manager becomes available in May. All so predictable now.

I am 8 years old and this is the first time my dad has allowed me to write on here I feel really bad about my team playing really bad but I can not see Mick McCarthy changing things around as he will not let any of our young boys play, who did so well for us last season and were a credit to the Wolves, at least they wore the shirt with pride and played their hearts out unlike these players that the manager has bought in to the team to replace them. Like my dad I have had enough of all the lame excuses that Mr McCarthy comes out with, I think that if we lose on saturday then he should go because we will drop further down the league and I will be really sad if we get sent down to division one please Mick give the young players a chance and then we can maybe win some games.
    Thankyou From Jekabs.

Young man for an 8 year old boy you certainly have made some very good points, I along with many other Wolves fans would of hoped to see some of our young guns given the shirt as they obviously last season showed that they were good enough to play. I do not know how to explain to you politely but here goes, Mick McCarthy is a very stubborn man, |I suppose it is a little like you when your mom or dad asks you to do something for them and you refuse that is being a bit like Mr McCarthy is, I think that is the best way I can put it, if any of you WOlves fans can explain it better in a polite way mind you, then do so. Don,t you think it is nice for such a young man to voice his comments and fears on here?? I say well done.

I think this could be good for us fans, maybe it will make us realise what its like to be in a relagation battle and stop moaning when we are just off play off places. I respect Morgan for not wanting instant success as this approach could be what makes wolves an established premiership club within 15 years. We won’t do it in 2 or 3 seasons, we need to build gradually.
Last season was a fluke, next season could be much better

Come on Latvia Wolf 56, don`t be a pessimist all through the season as the run can`t go on like this. As an example for a beleagured manager I mentioned Alex Fergoson in the early 90s but there`s a clearer example in this season`s Championship.
Dave Jones is the man who by the results achieved look a certainty for the sack as Cardiff were very near the relegation zone. But look where they are now.
And what about Crystal Palace, Norwich and QPR just to mention these three. So anything can happen till the end of the season. And if you go bach one year Wolves were in 10th place at the end of the year.
Regarding Mick at Wolves in my first comment I said 8 months but it should have been 18 months.
    Wolves will be back!

Well we can kiss the next 3 years goodbye as we sink to the depths of the Bhatti bros era now known as the steve Morgan era we now know that we will sink just like the proverbial ship McCarthy is buying players who will be able to score in the blue square premier and keep us there!! The only way forward for our club is down witrh this muppet in charge. It wouldn,t at all surprise me if there is not some plan to put our club out of business and then demolish the golden palace and build houses on the land after all Morgan is still in dealings with Redrow, give it a few years and see what happens.
I wouldn,t trust this SCOUSE GIT as far as I could throw him!!!

Common sense from Steve Morgan. Interesting that people who have never achieved anything, feel free to criticise a man who built a major company. He is also prepared tp match his commitment with his money.

Changing managers, in football, quite often is the problem not the solution.

What hope have we got when MM is chuffed to bits when we draw dismally at QPR/Norwich – both teams doomed at the time.
Got a funny feeling we’ll hear after Scunny -yet another doomed team this weekend.

At the moment there is nobody available to replace MM who is much better than him. Top class, international managers are not going to come to Wolves with our pathetic record over the last 20 years. We need an up and coming young manager showing talent (Ince the Boss?).

I anticipate that Mr Morgan is scouting for a good’un, and in the meantime we have to put up with MM.

Equally, I expect that the same applies to Moxey, aiding and abetting 12 years of failure. Mr Morgan has run a major plc and will not be easily fooled.

I have never booed a Wolves player, and I never will. Let’s just get behind the lads while the story unfolds.

Lets be honest we have played crap for most of this season. Starting with Watford and don’t forget Morecambe and Hull.
So for MM to turn it around it will take a massive effort. He has Morgan’s backing and looks like staying. Let’s pray MM is right and the majority of us are wrong. Maybe the new signings will help turn it around cos if not we will be in serous danger of RELEGATION !!!

guess when you lot have made your minds up there is no going back. I have been equally annoyed at some of his decisions and wanted him gone before the transfer window. however he’s still here and has made a couple of good signings IMO. With edwards in the centre along side henry, and jarvis and kights down the flanks, we’ll be banging the goals in. A lot of folk criticise MM for knocking the confidence out of the strikers, then go and boo them themselves!? where is the logic?

    Comment 38 Spot On
MM is failing miserably to get the team to play with any leadership or purpose
We cant hit the target and the focus is on “putting in a shift”???

How many more games are we going to endure before someone calls time on this painfull pitifull poor excuse for a football team that is being run by a meglomaniac who likes to be the “King”?

If MM is truthfull with his stats he will end up “hanging” himself as its blatently transparent for anyone with eyes, ears and a braincell that the standards out on the football pitch is less than average and far too often poor at best

SM may well have “wished” to go into the Prem with MM and Moxey BUT if this carries on – we dont believe that SM will be as patient for much longer with either MM or JM

We want to see POSITIVE, PASSIONATE PLAYERS wearing the Old Gold N Black
NOT players who are dislillushioned at playing left wing or full back – when they clearly cannot manage to do the roles their given (too many of MM’s favs being picked that cant really hack it and shouldnt be even on the suns bench)

We have C Mulgrew and D Jones that could play left back – Why not give either of them a go instead of looking at other players – the latest rumour is D Fox from Walsall – M Little England U19 Right Back has gone on loan to the Cobblers – so Northampton now have: M Little R Back and D Jones L Back ???

We need a centre half with some pace – so why not look at this, and a creative midfield player or wide man that can fill in whilst Kites is injured – What about S Newton who has just been released by Leicester – Is he still good enough – If so get him in for the wide right berth with Jarvis wide left

The dross that is being served up is killing the club – How many more games do we have to put up with before SM does something about it? Moxey is only ever bothered when pressure is put on his own position – otherwise, bums on seats and bonuses is all that matters

Enough is enough – Lets hope that either a miracle happens and MM has an overnight tactics inspiration or we get a manager that knows how to motivate and coach players

If MM isnt sacked or has an overnight change in his tactics and attitude – we doubt if we will even make the play offs – based on the last 12 performances

A less than average season with less than average performances! :-(

    Very Very Poor Mr Morgan
