Wulfs 7 Bustleholme 0

Tuesday 15th January 2008, 9:36AM GMT.

Some days everything just seems to fall into place, today was one of those days for Wulfs, even allowing for the fact that Bustleholme were fielding an under-strength team.

With Andy Mitchell suspended, Bryn Jones was drafted in for his first start of the season and he slotted in as if he’d never been away.

The pre match call was for the wide players to have a much greater influence on the game and it was clear from the outset that they were up for the challenge.  Just five minutes were on the clock when Fraser Houston was released down the right flank and he crossed to the far post where Liam Evans flung himself at the ball but could only direct his effort straight at the keeper.

Ricky Anslow then had a goal ruled out for a marginal offside decision before Wulfs took the lead in the 10th minute.  Anslow intercepted an attempted back pass and although the keeper parried his shot, Bryn Jones was on hand to force home the rebound.

Jones then saw another effort cleared off the line and Danny Crudgington saw his direct free kick bounce back off the foot of the post before Wulfs doubled their advantage in the 21st minute.  Keeper Danny Tipton plucked a cross out of the air before throwing out quickly to Bryn Jones on halfway and he a cross-field ball to Liam Evans who had one touch to control and another to fire past the helpless keeper.

Jones then immediately had another effort cleared off the line before Wulfs made it 3 – 0 in the 23rd minute.  Again it came from a defensive mistake but this time it was Fraser Houston who profited by intercepting a short back pass and driving a low shot past the keeper.

In the midst of all this carnage, Bustleholme keeper Neil Page was performing with great distinction to keep the score line manageable.  A point blank save from Ricky Anslow was followed up by a good save from Robin Sheffield and then a tip over the bar from a Bryn Jones shot.

He was helpless, however, to prevent Wulfs from making it four in the 38th minute.  Fraser Houston picked the ball up from a throw in out on the right before dancing past a couple of defenders and rifling a shot past the keeper.

Bustleholme’s one and only chance of the half came in the 41st minute when Adam Wattley hooked a ball over his shoulder to put Joe Attwood in the clear but Danny Tipton was alert enough to close the angle and pull off a fine save.

The restart saw Wulfs pick up where they had left off as they increased their lead five minutes in.  Ricky Anslow delivered an awkward cross which the keeper could only push out from under his crossbar allowing Liam Evans to nip in to pick up the loose ball and cut back for Robin Sheffield to fire into the roof of the net from close range.

Keeper Neil Page continued to produce heroics, tipping a Myles Fenn shot over the bar and saving well from Bryn Jones before he was beaten for the sixth time in the 66th minute.  Fine play down the left flank culminated in Liam Evans squaring a pass for Fraser Houston to complete a fine hat-trick with a first time shot past the advancing keeper.

Page was at his brilliant best again to keep out shots from Richard Gummery and Ricky Anslow but just as it looked as though the in-form striker was destined not to score, he got his inevitable goal in the 79th minute firing home from close range after Stewart Mason had picked him out in a crowded goalmouth.

That signalled the end of the scoring but Wulfs were more than satisfied with both the result and the performance.
