Wolves owner backs McCarthy

Tuesday 15th January 2008, 11:29AM GMT.

wd2128001soccer-steve-mo.jpgWolves are refusing to budge in their backing for manager Mick McCarthy as he grapples with his biggest crisis since coming to Molineux.

McCarthy’s team slumped to a 3-0 home defeat by Crystal Palace which extended his side’s winless Championship sequence to eight games and once more brought a hostile atmosphere back to the club’s home venue.

But chief executive Jez Moxey continues to counsel patience in his resistance to the “hiring and firing” culture of the 1990s and owner Steve Morgan left on an overseas trip refusing to turn the slump in form into a media firestorm.

The wealthy business magnate, who has gone to Uganda on a Channel 4 TV project linked to his recent appearance in the Millionaire’s Mission series, is sticking to his vow to keep a low profile and avoid feeding the game’s rampant speculation culture.

But in his most recent interview  for a business magazine, Morgan re-affirmed his opposition to the trigger-finger culture of previous eras.

He said: “Wolves have had a chequered last decade in regards to managers – I want to stop that.

“I don’t think you can get anywhere by hiring and firing – you have to work together as a team.”

“I don’t think you can get anywhere by hiring and firing – you have to work together as a team.

“Going back to my business days at Redrow – my top people were with me for years and we trusted each other. That’s the way of successful business – football is no different.”

Sources at Molineux confirm that philosophy is still the driving force at the club, with Moxey a major figure of support for McCarthy, even as the Wolves boss faces up

to growing criticism of his team’s faltering campaign. Since starting December with a 1-0 victory over Preston which took them third, three points off the top, Wolves have plunged nine places.

Last week the club were forced to respond to tabloid claims that Morgan was lining up old Liverpool contacts Sammy Lee or Paul Ince

to replace McCarthy, reports dismissed by Moxey as “wholly inaccurate”.

But chants in support of Ince, who established a popular bond with Wolves fans during his four-year stay, were heard during the height of McCarthy’s discomfort on Saturday.

Depending on the style of play you want to see big Sam could be the answer, he’s local, he’s gold and black so theoretically passion would be in abundance and failure would be a word that’s banned. ps moxey/morgan /mccarthy,
after all the talk of us needing a left back, surely we also need to try and buy a new decent quick centre half, and a centre midfielder who can run with the ball rather than go sideways and backwards.having said that a fit mark davies is better than potter, gibson and henry,so hurry up mark get fit your club needs you.

How on earth he can state after each dull draw or defeat, it’s not through a lack of trying, i don’t know. I have really lost faith, big time. And as for all of the ‘loyal’ MM lovers, i cannot abide his stupid arrogant post match comments anymore, he is a joke, a rich joke, who should make way for someone with a more sophisticated football mind. I am sorry Steve Morgan but in this instance YOU ARE WRONG! McCarthy is clueless, stubborn and continues to play his favourite players to the detriment of reserve players who surely could do a similar job if not better while also playing players out of their preferred positions which creates disharmony and total confusion.
The booing and frustration results from all of these things!
If what you are saying about not changing personnel is how you have become so successful in business then I AM TOTALLY AMAZED!
If you have not yet realised then what is very likely to happen very soon, maybe against Sheffield Wednesday, is that the gates for home games will drop dramatically and income will be exceeded by outgoings, now that IS a good way to run a business!
As long as McCarthy stays as manager, this club will have little support, the ground will be empty except for away supporters and no doubt the end of the season will see the proud name of Wolverhampton Wanderers FC in League 1 for the 2008/2009 season! Sir Jack will have nightmares!
Steve, enjoy your time in Africa, maybe they have a team or 2 you could invest in there and if so, take McCarthy to manage them, we won’t miss him!

MM has to buy a central midfielder asap or give davies, gleeson, rosa a chance. I get very frustrated with mick as everyone sez on here that he has his favourites which he clearly does i.e bothroyd, seyi who in my opinion are extremely overated

Maybe mick if you were not so bloody stubborn and dropped some of the so called big names and give some of the kids a chance then the fans would see that at least youre trying something new and not sticking to the same ols week in week out.

Mr morgan give him until the end of the season because if we sack him now it will dent the teams confidence and then their will be no chance at all of the playoffs.

Still, this is an important article because it reminds us that Steve Morgan calls the shots, not us. My personal opinion is that Mick McCarthy should have been sacked a couple of weeks ago. But I’ve made up my mind.
If Morgan gives McCarthy this second chance, I will get behind him and hopes he takes it. If Morgan sacks McCarthy, virtually writing off this season, then I will get behind the new gaffer to try to build momentum for next season.
Let’s face it, Morgan is in a difficult situation because of the suddenness and the unexpectedness of the decline. What he will do, we don’t know. This news is too old to matter.

Everyone know it takes time to build a team that will not only win promotion but stay in the premier league. All you people shout out calling for MM head think of this. Wolves could well get promoted with this team but will then come straight back down again a la Watford, WBA, Derby, Sunderland and countless others. Suddeness of decline!? It started at half time against Watford in the first match of the season.

All this “wait until the end of the season” stuff is total rubbish!

As I’ve said repeatedly, both SM and MM said at the beginning of the season that the aim was “top 2″ and automatic promotion. That becomes the objective and you measure against that.

Yes, of course, loads of teams want automatic promotion and only 2 can have it but most are based on unrealistic hope!

We started the season with a base of 5th, £4m worth of new players and a squad high on confidence, ability and hunger.

Since then, apart from Henessey, there hasn’t been a single inch of progress towards the objective and in terms of play and confidence we’ve gone spectacularly backwards.

“Hire and fire” is not a great way to run a business but neither is sticking your head in the sand and ignoring the stunningly obvious! MM has no record of turning round a downward spiral…he just gets more powerless and comes out with pitiful post-match comments.

I’d love ten year stability at Molineux under a Moyes or similar but that is not a reason not to sack a manager after 18 months when he has patently got it wrong and shows absolutely no sign of knowing how to get it right!

MM, please don’t tell us that driving up the motorway twice in a week has tired him out. It’s just as well he doesn’t have to work for a living! Blame the players??? Not their fault – they are low on confidence and many of them just not good enough at this level.

Mick allegedly coaches and selects the players – the buck stops with him.

If it’s not him doing the coaching then he should select a better coach – again this is his responsibility.

If strikers aren’t scoring then he needs to find the right combination although he hasn’t given any of them a decent run in the team to find a bit of form… different pair most weeks.

And whose fault is it that we don’t have a creative midfield and are playing too many poor players out of position???

Is that the players fault too or is that up to McCarthy? I think you know the answer.

Wolves fans do get behind the team and manager, look at last season losing 6-0 against Southampton at home, they were cheered off.
What the wolves supporters want are good consistent performances, it doesn’t matter if we loose if we have seen a good game. This season Mick McCarthy has been playing players out of position just like Glen Hoddle and the lack of goals has been a constant problem last season as well as this. Not enough creative players, still wonder why we let Michael McIndoe go to Bristol City. I don’t think we will get to the Premiership with Mick McCarthy as manager, I think we will struggle against Scuthorpe on Saturday.
It is a shame that we did not get Gary Johnson as manager instead of Glen Hoddle as Don Goodman suggested in an article before we took on Hoddle.
This is a results business and Wolves need a manager who can deliver.

Steve Morgan under normal circumstances loyalty has to be praised but I certainly feel that this backing of MM will eventually come back to haunt you!
ALL of us fully appreciate what MM did for us last season when we clearly over achieved in reaching the play-offs but despite all of the money spent in the last 12 months we still have no cure for the problem of not being able to score goals.
This problem was a constant thorn in our side last season when you only have to look at our goal difference.
Since Jan 2007 MM has signed Keogh, Ward, Eastwood, Elliott, and now Ebanks-Blake (too early to judge) but still the problem exists, which clearly shows that the problem is not the strikers i.e. it is the service, or more pertinently lack of service they get – this point is obvious to all of us loyal supporters but MM does not see it.
Surely you cannot let things go on like this for too much longer!!!!!

Looks like Andy Keogh is getting on the band wagon too:

“People might think it was a positive thing towards me because they didn’t want me to go off, but it’s not, it’s a negative thing towards the club,” he said. “We don’t need to hear that at the Molineux. It’s our stadium and we don’t need to hear boos, we need to hear cheers.

(Wrong Andy, it’s our stadium, we were there long before you arrived and we’ll be there long after you’ve hung your boots up).

“They can boo the referee and they can boo the other team, but not boo anything to do with us.

“I was coming off because I’d had a bad dose of flu for the last 10 days and I couldn’t breathe properly.”

He added: “They’ve got to respect all the players and we’ll respect all the fans, like we do.”

(Respect us by playing good football and we might show you what we can really do as good fans).

Personally I’m sick of the players now coming out and having a go at the fans. We don’t pick the team or go out and give a half arsed performance week in week out.
All that will happen is they’ll be playing to the groundsmen and the club will wither again. The good will gesture has to come from the club, not the fans.
    We owe them nothing.

First problem and some of the supporters act stupid, anyone booing at the mol at there own team in future should be lined up and shot. Look at Wigan keep changing mangers, has it improved them at all. Work with Mick help him through this rough patch, the booing is having a really bad effect on the players confidence, its not helping anyone. Albion Wizards thanks for your comment but how can you say that Muppet Mick is a better manager than Bryan Robson? im my opinion Robbo was a far better player and IS a far better manager but as I say that is only my humble opinion. As for not playing Div 1 football next season, another couple of bad results and we will be right in the relegation mix and that is the gospel, we may be fickle but that fickleness only comes out because we are passionate about our club as no doubt you are about the albion so maybe if your club were in the same posistion now as we are you mean to tell me your fans wouldn,t be showing their disaproval?? I wish you well in your quest for promotion as I have no doubt that you will achieve it this season with the squad you have and I know other Wolves fans will have a go at me for saying this but when you come to the Mol I fully expect our team to get a drubbing that is unless Muppet Mick and Moxey are gone.

I’m not happy with team selection at present and am as frustrated as any Wolves fan but we are being made a laughing stock by the booers in the main. We all have our prejudices with regards to players and, yes, the main problem is playing lads out of position. The squad is good enough although I have always been of the opinion that the back four needed a couple of speedy, class defenders. Booing Ward, a hard working 100%er just because he is out of his depth in where he is being asked to play is needlessly cruel and counterproductive. These booers must think such behaviour achieves something I suppose. It couldn’t possibly be because they are badly brought up, envious morons. I don’t want Ward on the wing but wouldn’t stoop so low as to cowardly boo him to destroy his confidence.

MM has to go and it has nothing to do with changing for the sake of it.
Do we keep him if at the end of the season we end in the bottom half with the lowest goals scored even though he has had money to spend. I don’t think so.

I have nothing against MM but there is a MASSIVE problem at Wolves and I can’t believe that all Wolves fans can’t see it.

So hopefully the boo boys can now stop the speculation, save their breath, stop the booing, stop the whingeing and stop trying to hound mick out of the club.

Hopefully now, the fickle crew will channel their enthusiasm and energy into actually supporting the players and staff at our great club. Sad but true, some of you really do only sing when youre winning. You should try it, surprisingly it doesnt half help a team.

If you really cant support them through thick and THIN the wolves would be better off if you didnt go to the molineux.
Id rather see 15000 real fans supporting at the mol.
Even with the lost revenue the team will be better off.
To the “ive paid my money so im entitled to boo” brigade, just simply dont pay and dont go.

Im indecisive on McCarthy. Last year he did a great job and we probably overachieved. Im as guilty as the next fan to jump on the “We’re crap” bandwagon, but sometimes you have to accept that every club has a slump. 9 games without a win is unacceptable, i nobody really knows whats changed so dramatically to cause this form. We can’t score goals, thats the main problem. Bothroyd is not creative enough on a consistant level, and elliot, keogh and eastwood need regular games with eachother to see what really fits. Ebanks-blake is a good buy. But regardless of how good our strike force could be with the right partnership….. we need a team (without just kightlys input) that can create goalscoring oppurtunities?? Remember the late eighties/early nineties???? The creativity of Robbie Dennison??? This is the type of attacking player we need to provide the strikers with the firepower thay need.. McCarthy needs a kick up the ass to drop his favourites….. a sacking would be harsh at this point!!!!

It’s all rubbish and the only real credible thought pattern must be directed at where we are in the league, 10 points of being relegated, three games and a bit! How can this even possibly be seen as “Premiership Bound”. We were higher up last season!

Last season MM got Wolves into the play offs and all Wolves supports thought here we go………….this season again Wolves are favourites to be in the play offs …………..yet Wolves are struggling to score goals and that is why Wolves are now in the middle of the pack.

As for the booing of players and of MM and the calls for MM to be sacked is out of order.

It will do Wolves no good sacking managers every season, it takes time for the manager and players to gel as a unit. Last season was pure luck that Wolves got to the play offs in the first place.

Wolves supports should let MM and his team go about forming a squad of players that will in the end be knocking on the door to premier football. If this takes a couple of seasons so be it.

Wolves have to earn the right for Premier league Footy, it’s not our god give right that we should in the premier league.

    Just my thoughts
