College revamp well under way

Tuesday 15th January 2008, 11:09AM GMT.

The £10 million transformation of Wolverhampton College’s Bilston campus was today well under way, with old classrooms demolished to make way for a new teaching block.

New sports, nursery and construction facilities are being created at the Wellington Road site, with most of the work expected to be finished in time for the start of the new term in September. The improvements will see the continuation of work that began several years ago.

The entrance of the college was completely transformed with modern buildings.

And although workers have only been on site for a couple of weeks, a number of outdated buildings have already been demolished to make way for their purpose-built replacements.

College bosses say the changes will transform learning for the students and provide the highest quality teaching and learning facilities for sport and construction trades.

And the improved nursery facility will support more families in this area by enabling parents to return to education.

A full-sized grass football pitch will also be added to complement an all-weather pitch and the improved sports facilities will be accessible for some of the time to the public.

College bosses have also revealed it will be a sustainable development with proposed features such as ground source heat pumps, solar panels and grey water recycling added into the build.

The college’s director of estates Andrew Brodie said today he was pleased with how well things were coming together.

“We are really pleased with how well it has gone so far,” he said.

“Everything is on course as it should be. The contractors have now demolished the old classrooms to make way for the construction block.”

The first stages of the Wellington Road campus revamp opened in 2002. It included a new science laboratory, an IT suite, 150-seater restaurant, internet cafe and community room.

The entire vision for the college over the next few years will see the rebuilding of the Paget Road campus off Tettenhall Road, and new technology campus at Wolverhampton Science Park on Stafford Road.
