Erlend talks set to continue

Wednesday 9th January 2008, 2:00PM GMT.

hanstveit.jpgWolves appeared to have reached deadlock in their pursuit of Brann left-back Erlend Hanstveit – but the deal is not dead.

A Norwegian delegation flew to England for talks on Monday night but left without agreement after rejecting Wolves’ £500,000 offer.

Brann sports director Roald Bruun-Hanssen said: “I met people from Wolves on Monday. We have not reached an agreement, but we are still talking.

“If and when there is a deal, we will say it, but at the moment it’s hard to say what will happen. I don’t want to say anything more at this stage.”

Hanstveit’s father Per said: “We won’t say anything before the clubs reach an agreement.”

Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey was unavailable for comment.

The player himself, who returns from holiday in New York on Saturday, is keen to follow former team-mate Seyi Olofinjana and try his luck at Molineux after nine years with his only club.

The deadlock comes as manager Mick McCarthy revealed he is keen to sign players as early as possible in the January window to bed them in ready for the team’s promotion push.

“There’s always those balls in the air where you’re trying to get someone and they’re waiting on someone else,” said McCarthy.

“But we’re trying to avoid making a last desperate attempt to try to get people in at the last minute. I’d be hopeful the deals we do will get done before then.”

The offer for Hanstveit is one of three serious bids Wolves have lodged for different targets.

McCarthy was again linked with the vacant Irish manager’s job today, with reports claiming the 48-year-old is set to be approached amid alleged “unrest” between him and owner Steve Morgan.

But Wolves have already dismissed the speculation.

Morgan must surely realise that Thick Mick isn’t going to take us on the “promotion push” he talks about.
If he doesn’t get rid in January then it must be because he can’t get his ideal manager in until the summer.

On that basis we are not going to be spending a lot of money in January which is a good thing, not sure we have enough Irish bars in Wolverhampton to cope with any more players.

Pathetic idiots. Get a life. MM got Sunderland promoted, and given time, he will get us promoted. (Don’t tell me they came down again. Keane has spent over 40 Million pounds, whereas MM had peanuts when he was there. Keane has still got them in the bottom three. Is he a bad manager worthy of the sack?)

MM got Ireland within a penalty shoot out of the quarter-finals. (After losing their supposedly best player.) He took a team threatened with relegation last season, and got us to the play-offs. This season has been disappointing, but he promised promotion in three years. In case you can’t count, he is only halfway through that.

What have any of you ever achieved in your lives that is comparable with what he has achieved? My guess is nowhere near as much.

MM is having a bit of a struggle at the moment but this season is a mirror image of last season – a good start which peters out around Christmas only to be given a lift by new players in January. We should give MM the three years that he needs…….we should also support the players – they do not come into work to do a bad job. Give them a chance and give them your support

All this dieing for the shirt as reached total overkill and we need an urgent does of reality, which might lead to more informed discussion rather than latching on to every piece of media generated rumour.

Every football fan wants to see their club achieving. Unfortunately the truth is theres only three promotion places available to the championship and at the moment I don’t feel we have one of the top three squads. We need to accept that Mick is building, and it is going to take time. We need some consistency in the management. I agree there must be more bargain buys out there and therefore we shouldnt spend millions just because Mr. Morgan has provided it. We have all seen some of the panic buys from recent Wolves managers and I would rather see the money held on to than spent rashly.

Has the club really progessed since the days of Graham Turner and co.? If MM has to go we may as well bring Graham back in. His CV stands up to most. He had success at Shrewsbury after he became player-manager in the 1978-79 season, the same year the club sealed the Third Division championship. Shrewsbury then spent a number of seasons in the Second Division and Turner twice led them to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. He ended his playing career in 1983, and left Shrewsbury after six seasons to take charge of Aston Villa in the summer of 1984. Unfortunately as we know his time at Villa was cut very short.

He was then appointed manager of Wolves, a club then in the Fourth Division and massively in debt. In his first season Wolves reached the play-offs but failed to secure promotion. However the following two seasons brought successive landslide promotions with the help of goal-machine Steve Bull and striking partner Andy Mutch. He also led Wolves to Sherpa Van Trophy glory at Wembley in 1987-88. We are still in the same position as he left us mid-table in Englands second tier!

And look at what he has done at hereford after they have stood by him. Appointed manager for the 1995-96 season, a club with major financial problems. In his first season the team reached the play-offs, after a tremendous run from 19th to 6th in two months, but failed to progress past the semi-final stage. Unfortunately Graham was unable to retain several key players due to financial constraints and the 1996-97 season was a very different story.

Then after becoming a conference team, his squad built entirely of free transfers, evolved arguably into the best footballing side in the Conference achieving three consecutive 2nd places. Unfortunately Hereford failed to progress in the play-offs in 2003-04 and 2004-05 but in the 2005-06 season it was third time lucky. Hereford survived their first season back in the Football League, and have began the 2007-08 in fine form.

just like the other “experts” on here – I’m amazed you didn’t get the Wolves job ahead of MM given your insight and superior knowledge.

There is only one major problem that prevents Wolves from realising our true potential – take a look in the mirror and you will see it. Booing our own players, screaming for Moxey to go, shouting for Hoddle to go, hounding Taylor out of the club, forcing McGhee out. I once spoke to Steve Froggatt about playing for Wolves and he told me that if his first cross wasn’t spot on then the abuse from the Wolves fans made him not want to cross the ball again but roll it sideways for someone else to take their chances instead. We have exactly the same “disease” at Molineux that has turned Newcastle into a team of perennnial underachievment – unrealistic fans who believe the managers and players “owe them” for past failures and demanding all the repayment right this minute. Take a look at what’s happening to Allardyce there and you will see exactly the same problem that we have at Wolves. All the time you lot pitch up each week, and when the first attack doesn’t result in a goal, you get your “money’s worth” by booing and abusing, sadly, we’re going no-where……. Now cheering and supporting for 90 minutes whatever the score, whoever is playing, whoever is manager….. there’s a thought!!

It seems Mick was interested in the Korea job, but the stumbling block was the time he had to spend out there during the year – seven months I believe.
Also, it now seems that he has let it be known that he is interested in the Irish manager’s job again.
If these reports are true then Mick is just biding his time waiting for what he thinks is a better offer to come along – maybe that is why the team is not performing. They know that it’s only a matter of time before Mick goes.
Certainly we don’t want a manager that is not interested in being manager of Wolves. That said, there is not that much talent out there to replace him.
Final point. I am regularly picking up what seems to be anti-Irish feeling on this blog among Wolves supporters and that is disappointing if it is true.
Why make it an Irish issue. It is about a manager, who happens to be from Ireland.

‘Blue eyed boys’? Time to pull your head out of your hole mate, if McCarthy occasionally has a pop back at the fans it’s because some of you talk absolute tripe and need a reality check. So you think that the fans are entitled to criticise the manager but should be immune from criticism themselves? Why do you fail to realise that it is this attitude that is dragging us down? Until it is shaken off we will never progress to where we want to be. We have so many positive things in place to return us to where we feel we should be – great facilities, an owner with belief and the power to invest, a great manager and with some tweaking, a very very good team – however, it is the small-minded mentality of (the vast minority) of the fans that is our Achilles Heel, and it will remain this way until you wake up and realise that your moaning and booing is only detrimental to the club, and nothing more.

No. 4 – this is a superb example of so-called fans just making things up. To say the manager isn’t interested is nonsense.

Every manager in the country picks the players he thinks will perform best. You may not agree with the manager’s choices but to think MM is doing anything different from any other manager beggars belief.

The team has one bad patch in the season and so-called fans line up to speculate and invent nonsense.

It seems to me that there are some Wolves ‘fans’ who aren’t happy unless things are going wrong. It takes time to build teams and get major success..

Look at Newcastle. 4 managers in 3 and a half years and where has that got them? And anyway who else is there at the moment? Paul Ince? No, not yet. Look at what’s happening to Roy Keane at the moment and that’s after a successful Championship season

No team can win every match. No team can go through a whole season without a bad patch. No team plays every match at the highest possible standard.

For God’s sake, support the team and the manager and don’t make things up that cannot possibly be substantiated!

    Just a comment

Everybody is entitled to a view – good or bad, whatever you think of anyone elses opinion is irrelevent.

Calling names of others who do not conform with your views is a little childish.

What you may have forgotten is thatall Wolvs supporters were 100% behind MM and Wolves last season – Why?
In my opinion this was mainly due to the fact that Hoddle left us in total disarray by leaving when he did…..Then comes MM who I thought at the start “Oh No”.

We were left with a group of about 12 first team players if I recall and even had to cancel sme friendlies due to shortages of players.

MM took stock and went about getting in numbers – signing Bothroyd, Jemal Johnson, Gary Breen and others on a shoe string
and I for one thought here we go – Relegation.

What he also did was blood the youth again – and play them in their correct positions.
I think this was a stroke of genious BECAUSE how many home supporters expectations were high at this time?
Many were expecting a relegation battle – So anything else was a bonus.
What happened – The team grew in confidence, a few more additions followed, playing in their natural positions, the kids performed and if they had a bad spell the crowd got behind them – Why – Because they were OUR kids.
The whole club moved forward as one, nothing could stop it, players proud to wear the shirt, fans proud to support the team – UNITY.
Where (in my opinion) this has all gone wrong, MM has discarded the kids (without explanation) replacing them with other signings playing out of position and playing badly to boot.
He has developed a bunker mentality which has alienated himself from the fans and badly dented the kids confidence, as they must think “what have we got to do to get in this team”

All I ask is for MM to open his eyes and look back at WHY we were succesful last season and what gave us a wonderful roller coaster ride – and what made me proud to support our great team again after the Hoddle era.

Don’t know the answers just my opinion

We’ve faced this sort of situation before. I’ve always favored sticking by managers and I think MM will produce a Wolves team that once again produces match winning performances. My question is when and is Steve Morgan prepared to wait? Whereas previously we’ve all scratched our heads over the quality of other prospective managers, now there are many impressive CVs out there without a club. Including Billy Davies and now, Big Sam!

My question is if we did get rid of MM who do we bring in. Big Sam is the only one I can think of and lets face it would he really want to come to us.

I would stick by MM, we don’t want to be seen as a sack the Manager club as soon as we lose a few games or we will be no better than Newcastle.

Then we would never get a decent manager as they would know they would not be given the time to achieve anything.

    6 – excellently put.

can’t believe allardyce has gone, this game is getting stupid. 20 odd games in, ridiculous.

hope the same don’t happen to mccarthy, a bad patch and he’s suddenly a bad manager, don’t think so.

i can’t slate any wolves fan cos they’re part of our great club. and they are entitled to their opinions but i honestly think MM can turn things round, but will he be given time !! i fear not in this day of greed first football second.

play the kids same as last year, no fear, and run themselves into the floor. no movement no creativity, but put a kid on who wants the ball, davies, gleeson etc. theres your key to stopping the unrest Mick. p.s. if we’re keen on this lad, and you want players in now, get him, without us bidding 10p short…….

Big Sam the wolves fan has just left Newcastle. Forget Little sa(sammy lee) as manger but assistant yes. Big and little sam at wolves would be a dream. Look at what they did at Bolton, Made them a eurpoean team in the premier league. With these two wolves could be the next bolton. Get it done Morgan speak to mate sammy lee and ask if he and his wolves supporting mate from dudley want to run Wolves!!!

Well said Willenhallwolves! I was beginning to think I’d tuned into the wrong site!

MM never was and isn’t a Premiership Manager and I never agreed with appointing someone just to get us promoted. He failed twice in the Premiership – spectacularly- and what I remember on both occasions was his inability to explain what was going wrong and his seeming powerlessness to put it right! Sound familiar!?

It’s not just about the results – it’s about your style of play! Yes, the Baggies have lost more than they should have done this season but they go out to entertain and play attractive football. It’s not only their fans who praise them, it’s the objective spectator. I’m sick and tired of hearing the words dull, inept, boring, lacking ideas etc etc applied to the team I love. It’s been all season. Even if we get promoted – and that’s as likely as Moxey ever admitting he made a bad appointment – MM is not the manager to take us on to Premiership stability.

No, I probably can’t claim to have achieved what MM has…..but I’m realistic enough to know where my capabilities lie and what my customers want!

We should all give McCarthy and the team our support until the end of the season. He has not had important players like Kightly, Breen, Craddock to pick from during this bad league run, once all 3 are back regular combined with a few quality January signings (hopefully) you will see a big difference. If we still don’t at least make the playoffs with those additions then I think Morgan will wield the axe.

MM came to Wolves desperate to reinstate himself. This season, he is cruising. We are seeing totally irrational decisions being made, out of convenience and comfort of living and surviving in the Championship.

That is the limit of Moxley’s ambitions as well. He can not survive in the Premiership. His limitations were exposed last time. This is a conspiracy of Championship level talent to spin those of us who want to be up there with the top 4 of the Premiership. When the Ireland’s ran the club we were right up there at the very peak.

Please, Mr Morgan emulate them and put us back up there with the best.

The overriding fact is we are NOT going to get top players in the january window, so sign loanees. The manager issue will come to head in the summer. Mr Morgan is no mug and no dishcloth.I agree, some of mick’s square pegs are bewilldering.Personally i will sing my heart out, but come the end of the season we must see GOALS !!!

I wouldnt give the clown 20 pence, let alone half a mill for a player that MAnure tried to sign 10 years ago.He wasted nearly 3mill on Eastwood, who, he won;t sell, because we would be lucky to get anything for him! Midfiled is priority, for goodness sake you muppet, wake up!! Morgan, do yoy duty, and sack him now.Thanks.

One simple question. Why play bothroyd? can anyone help me because to me he is just the laziest player i have ever seen. Surely thats not the kind of player we need in a team apparently pushing for promotion. get rid like we did Leon Clarke.

Pathetic… Mick is an excellent manager. He had a fantastic season last year after fifty pence nearly got us relegated and this year he has suffered from injuries he could do nothing about. He is our best manager since Jones. Get off his back and get behind the team.

I’ve achieved plenty but not gona jusitfy any of it to you so why don’t you shove yourself up your own arse…. you’re pathetic. You must rate yourself pretty awesome to state that so put your money where your big mouth is and tell us…..come on I challange you. I also suggest you get down to Molineux once in a while.

If there was a league table for the best supporters in the Championship; ask ourselves, where would we be placed? Surely, the success of any club is the unity shown by everybody. How does it help the players and manager to be continually on their backs? A house divided against itself won’t get very far. Last season we over-achieved, now we have probably found things our not quite where we expected to be. So let’s be patient and get behind our great club.

Lets be honest with ourselves last season we over achieved! this season we should finish level or there abouts as last season and push on next season – lets give MM time to build a squad and team that can gain us promotion automatically.

Lets look for long term glory (ala Man WHOO and ARSEnal) rather than short term success (bouncing up and down between this divison and the premiership!!).
