Shivering region braced for snow
Wednesday 2nd January 2008, 11:44AM GMT.
Snow could be on its way as temperatures fall below freezing in the West Midlands and Staffordshire. Forecasters are predicting bitterly cold weather.
They say it could lead to snowfall tomorrow and Friday. Daytime temperatures will struggle to get above -1C (30F), and with bitterly winds from the east, it will feel much colder.
Gritting lorries in the region were today being prepared as motoring organisations warned drivers to take extra care.
Met Office spokesman Barry Grommett said: “The significant feature of the weather in the West Midlands will be the temperature. It will be very cold overnight this evening, and we will see some frost.
“In the early part of tomorrow morning, temperatures could fall to -2C (28F) but coupled with strong winds, it is going to feel particularly cold.”
He said the West Midlands would see some snow but the main problems will be further east, where more than half an inch is likely.
The Highways Agency says it is on stand-by for a dip in temperatures.
Stephen Davenport, senior meteorologist at MeteoGroup, said the cold snap was due to conditions in Eastern Europe, rather than the cold winds from Siberia.

No doubt as soon as the first snowflake falls the entire region will grind to a halt

Brace ourselves for the country to come to a halt.

1/2 an inch. Wow!! Surely the country will grind to a halt and a state of emergency declared?

lol, SNOW!!! we get a little bit probably 1 or 2 milimetres, and everything grinds to a halt. I remember when I was at school, snow gauranteed every winter by the bucketload and we still had to walk to school over a mile away no days off for us unless the boiler froze up. these young uns today dont know anything other than oh we,ve had a bit of snow so no school today same as half the teachers couldn,t be bothered to get off their backsides, and talking of teachers, can anybody explain to me what teacher training days are??? I always thought teachers knew what they were doing, obviously not.

Would it be too much to ask for the footpaths at Wolverhampton Bus Station and the bridge leading to the Railway Station to have a bit of grit put down?

If we get the snow you do know what is going to happen, everything comes to a standstill, well I have been up most of the night and there has not been one gritter out down the main road where I live considering they have forcast snow and ice.But I love the snow let’s see if they get it right..

I’ve just come back from Brierley Hill and agree things will be chaotic. With numerous roadworks going on in and around our town and the every popular Merry Hell no doubt a bit of snow will bring Brierley Hill to an absoloute standstill. I’ve stocked up on books, food and wine to keep me going for a few days.

Forgot to add that one year it took my husband over 4 hours to come home from Sandwell to Brierley Hill due to a bit of snow. Wonder how long it be take him if there is snow this year?

Goodness me! The railway bridge WAS gritted! Well done. :-)

Bilstonwolf1 I’m also unsure what these days are for? Last year I faced backlash from my daughters school for taking her on holiday in school term. It was end of June so she didn’t miss any vital tests and things were winding down for the summer. But wow what a dressing down I had! I queried the amount of teacher training days, early finishes for ‘special days’and the amount of days the school was shut due to a bit of snow but no one could give me an answer. Incidentally she is at high school and for the past 2 weeks before the long Xmas Break the pupils did nothing but watch dvds, videos and play games – no wonder we are rearing a namby pamby society.

Its winter..why is everuone so damn surprised it gets cold.
You have my assurance having lived in Germany for 15 years that England IS NOT cold.
The snow causes no problems overseas..life goes on.Drivers go to work.Schools work…time the British people stopped moaning and got on with it and enjoyed the fact your not moaning about the heat from the summer!!
