Illness forced Keogh to go off

Wednesday 2nd January 2008, 1:27PM GMT.

Andy KeoghWolves today went to the unusual lengths of issuing an explanation for Andy Keogh’s substitution which so enraged the Molineux fans.

Keogh was taken off in the 65th minute to be replaced by Stephen Elliott, a move which brought boos from all sides of the ground and choruses of “you don’t know what you’re doing” aimed at manager Mick McCarthy.

The protests continued today with a flood of e-mails to the club from disgruntled fans which prompted a full explanation from the Wolves boss about the decision.

McCarthy explained that Keogh is still suffering from a chest infection which also forced him to withdraw the Irish international early in the game against Norwich.

McCarthy said: “After about ten minutes into the second half Andy couldn’t run. He was absolutely exhausted and that’s why I took him off. It was the same on Saturday. He’d pushed his body to the limits.

“He was coughing and spluttering during the break and after about five minutes into the re-start I saw that he was starting to struggle.”

The opening hours of the transfer window saw Wolves linked to a Championship free-for-all aimed at recruiting Blackpool winger Wes Hoolahan. Watford, Sheffield United and Leicester have also been watching the former non-League winger.

It was frustrating that he was taken off, and lazy, useless Bothroyd stayed on. Why did MM bring Elliot on instead of Freddy aswell?

Oh well it seems players these days no matter what age. Are always susceptible to injury. Players like Keogh and Kightly should run through a brick wall, instead of faining injury every week.

and why did it take about ten more minutes to bring on a sub? (Elliott was brought on at 65 minutes)
If you already knew he wasn´t fit for 90 minutes a sub should be warmed up and ready to come on at the same moment as Keogh got exhausted..

Stephen Elliot is not of the calibre expected at Sunderland, Man City or for that matter Wolves. Not to be too impersonnel I watched him at Leicester – he moved around a lot. Then him got himself infront of goal – two centre halves behind him, and a keeper to beat. He’s in the D just outrside the area. Guess what he did ? He pushed the ball too far with his next touch – stubbed his shot, their keeper picked it up like it was a back pass – and then he fell over.

I have no idea what MM was thinking when he signed this lad.

The vicious circle that we thought we had shaken off last season is now back in force – the team go through a rough spell, the fans get on the players’ backs, the players retreat into their shells and are afraid to try anything in case it goes wrong resulting in even more stick from the fans. Opposition managers tell their teams to frustrate our players because they know that after a while the fans will start having a go at the team – I don’t know why anyone could ever think that this is going to help the players. It is such a counter-productive waste of time booing the players (eg Elliot) or the manager, and will only self-perpetuate the longer it goes on. Sometimes I am almost ashamed to call myself a Wolves fan because I worry about getting tarred with the same brush as some of the rest of us – most people in football know about our reputation for poor support at home and they use this in their own favour… we have to stick with the players and the manager through this tricky period, as if we don’t, we will find it very difficult to come out the other side. Have a little foresight, and as that chubby keyboard player G Barlow sang, ‘have a little patience’!!

Stop knocking Bothroyd. If you watch closely you will see that he plays more intelligent passes and tries to be more creative than more or less anyone else in the team at the moment. It doesn’t always work – but at least he tries – and it would work more often if the people on the end of the passes were able to do more with them, which is why he needs an extended run with Freddie partnering him up front and Keogh tucked in just behind.
The person I don’t think we should be peresevering with is Darren Gibson. His contribution is nothing special. Give our own players a go – Potter deserves another chance, or try some of those who haven’t had a game yet such as Davies.

Will people make their minds up. People unjustifiabely criticised Eliiot at the start of the season, then he demonstrated that he is a decent player, when fit (although like all our strikers, he has struggled scoring) and people started to recognise this and show support. Then he missed what was an absolute sitter and people are on his back again. I think Elliot has shown some decent potential, whether you rate him or not he looks no worse than the others and whilst it could seem MM does have favourites, it also seems that many fans have decided to not like any Irish or ex Sunderland players just to take the opposite opinion and are unfair on many of the lads. To build a successful team, you’d have to start with the manager.Sorry Mick, you just don’t cut it with me.Paul Ince was relatively untried, but has done wonders at Macclesfield & MK Dons.
We definatly need a ball winning midfielder, someone in the Ince/Rae mould.Robbie Savage would be a good short term solution.Kev Philips alongside Freddie would worry one or two defences.Hypia & Riise might come cheaply, lets face it, they are no spring chickens. To get this current squad to the heights of the Premiership would not be an impossible task, even at this stage.

Our forwards are good enough for the Championship. But we do need wholesale change in the centre. If and when we get promoted, we would have to replace most of the forwards anyway – so there is no point in doing this twice within 6 months.

was ‘wulf’ at the same match, Jay Bothroyd is clearly a class player and now puts in the effort for which he was criticised last year. In terms of skill, the ability to work the ball and his general presence on the pitch he is worth his place every time.Whilst I am on,
.a.why does Freddie Eastwood enjoy such a rapport with the fans when he has done nothing.
.b. Keogh has often been a real lightweight, lacking judgement, unable to keep hold of the ball and being easily hustled off it. For 20 minutes on saturday he looked great, given that he isn’t fit then his fading after that period might be understandable. Was his early display an indicator of his improvement ?? I hope so then at least he will live up to the support that a vociferous part of the crown offers him.

Because of this, I will never align myself with the boo-boys or the quick-fix merchants, and I am always prepared to give the manager time and space to prove themselves until it is obvious that they can go on no longer. I thought we sacked Graham Taylor too early, I thought we sacked Dave Jones too early, and considering Mick McCarthy is the best manager we have had at the club since Turner I am happy to be in the minority who advocate the benefits of him staying until at least the end of 07/08. Getting rid of him now will just set us back to where we were 18 months ago / 3 years ago / etc etc etc. It just goes to show that whilst we may follow the same team, we can all have very different opinions on how we see things.

The only fan talking any sense on this website as far as I can see is Greg Cooper.(15) I am ashamed to be a Wolves fan at the moment with all the criticism aimed at Mick! From Mick’s point of view the worst thing he could have done was taken us to the play offs last season. If he had just taken us to a mid table position we would have said he had done a great job and our 10th position so far this year would see us steady improvement. Instead Mick performed miracles getting us into the play offs and now our expectations have been raised. We are going through a bad spell at the moment and we are playing unattractive scappy football. The team are clearly lacking confidence. But with several astute January signings and with Michal Kightley also set to return I think the tide will turn and we will go back to winning games. We will get at least a play off position this season. The division is poor and I am confident we will come good. I just wish my fellow supporters would have the same patience. I really cannnot understand our fickle fans.

We dont not need new strikers. The reason why they dont score is because instead of being in the box where they should be and want to be, they are out on the wings (bothroyd) running into corners (keogh, elliot) and coming off the bench with ten miuntes to go to make no impact on the game (freddy).

If we have creative players, i.e kightly when avalible, jarvis on the right or left, davies in centre mid, rosa (when fit), gobern, jones (get him back) we have endless creative options. but Mick wont give em a chance and instead plays (for reasons i dont know) HENRY , yes HENRY wide right or gibson.. when clearly thats not the way forward.

As for the defecne, best in the league. Foley is superb, one of the more consistant this season, ward and craddok have a good partnership, and gray at left back is energetic and can actually use his left foot. If not him the maybe mulgrew has a chance, or little at least. And as much as i dont want to slate my teams players, Breen would get in the team for me, and collins is mark clyde long lost twin.

In a week when a player has died, leaving a wife and 4 young children, how dare anyone believe that players are feigning injury (and yes, this is the correct spelling). How dare anyone say that McCarthy is using ‘illness’ as an excuse for substituting a player.

How can anyone who calls himself a ‘fan’ think that booing the team can in any way help the team to do better. Just remember that MM took a national team of hugely limited resources to a World Cup Finals Tournament, where they gave as good as they got. He could not have done that without loyalty from his players and backroom staff. Okay Keane go on his case. And yes, Keane got Sunderland promoted last year by virtue of character. But this season is proving to be different for him and will be a test of how good a manager he might become in the future.

It needs time and SUPPORT to build properly. Stop complaining!

Perhaps you could put some energy into sending condolences to a young family in Motherwell and maybe messages of support to a manager, Mark McGhee, as he attempts to pull a club and community back together.

Eastwood gets rapport with the fans as they have seen what he can do, rememebr the beginning of the season.

5 goals in 4 games(1 was for wales) then Mick stops playing him until he gets is attitude sorted, great managerial skills.

The Wolves fans see a 1.5 million pound player sitting on the bench week in and week out. We feel sorry for his talent being wasted and we are frustrated as we know what he could do if he has played correctly, ie not having to defend our 18 yard line.

You can say that about bothroyd why was he in our own goal area when the opposition were taking corner’s etc, No wonder we never score goals at the other end.

But we have to get behind the team. We need to be Wolves 12 man on the pitch. Roar the boys on and if you ain’t happy after the match then protest outside the stadium, so Morgan and Moxey and McCarthy know what you think of them.

Why did McCarthy play Keogh at all if he was ill. Surely everybody knows that you should not do any physical activity like football when yo are full of cold.

Let’s paly a fit player from the beginning instead. But MM has his favourites and he has his expensive seat warmer as well, who for 1.5 mill does that job a treat.

I think the booing at the game is wrong but i think the reason he came off for is poor, he should not have played in the first place.

It’s another reason given to the fan’s to question MM’s ability to manage the team.
