Albion target Kim De-Hoen faces a choice between a Premiership survival struggle and a chance to join the Baggies’ goal-filled bid for promotion.
The 25-year-old South Korean is back in his home country today preparing for his wedding tomorrow following talks with Albion boss Tony Mowbray over a bargain Hawthorns move in January.
The creative midfielder’s silky touches caught the eye of the Albion personnel in a short trial arranged in an effort for Kim to follow the English breakthroughs made by his countrymen led by Manchester United’s Park Ji-Sung and Reading’s Seol Ki-Hyeon.
But Mowbray admitted that a Premiership club was also bidding for the services of a player who will be a free agent at the turn of the year.
“There is still some talking to be done,” says Mowbray. “We’re not the only club in for him.
“The bottom line is that if it can be done then we’ll do it, but if expectations are too high then it won’t be done.
“I like him as a football player, with the ball, but I’ve not see enough of him to make it too great a commitment from our club, plus he plays in a position we’re not desperate for.
“But my view is if there is a talented footballer then you don’t worry about the opposition, you try and bring him in.”
The growing reputation of Albion’s commitment to passing football under Mowbray is what lured Kim to the Hawthorns in the first place and could yet be a key factor in Kim’s decision.
Mowbray hinted: “Without giving too much away, he may well be having to ask himself if he has a better chance figuring in team bidding for promotion in the Championship to one fighting against relegation in the Premiership.”
Meanwhile, Mowbray has quashed speculation that there has been any interest from Sheffield Wednesday in giving striker John Hartson a fresh start.

Do we really need another midfielder? I would sooner try and get a back up goalkeeper for Steele since Kiely is getting on a bit and strengthen the central defence and fullback positions.
