Sixteen suspected football hooligans were arrested today in dawn raids on people involved in violence between Birmingham City and Aston Villa.

Officers raided 20 addresses across Birmingham and held the men on suspicion of violent disorder.

It follows violence which left 40 police officers injured as fans left St Andrews following the derby on November 11.

In more than 90 minutes of violence, shops, vehicles and other property was damaged.

Det Sgt Neil Groutage, of Stetchford police, said: “West Midlands Police continues to clampdown on the minority of football fans who spoil the enjoyment of the game for the majority of peaceful fans who visit stadiums and watch matches in other venues throughout the region.

“We will do everything we can to catch them and prosecute them. Anyone found guilty of such offences will face a banning order, meaning they will no longer be able to follow their team, home or away.”

Police recently released CCTV images of the suspects in a move which is believed to have led to the identification of some of those arrested today.

They launched a fresh appeal for help today in tracing six men who are still wanted over the violence.
