Animal dream comes true

Saturday 8th December 2007, 11:40AM GMT.

wd2492660rescue-jm-05.jpgTinkerbell’s Animal Sanctuary, named in honour of her two four-month-old kittens Tinker and Bell, was founded just four weeks ago.

The 40-year-old, who used to be a community carer, now looks after a variety of creatures – from cats to chinchillas – at her home in Rosemary Road, Kidderminster. And she has already successfully re-homed two ferrets and two gerbils as part of her new venture.

Elaine said: “It’s a dream come true. I’ve always loved animals as my mum always had dogs and she used to take in injured birds and feed them worms.

“I get so much enjoyment out of it. The animals have so much love to give, even the ones that may have been ill-treated. I know there are a lot of groups out there already helping them but there are so many more needing help.”

Currently on her books are chinchilla, ferrets, rats and cats, and her garden is being transformed with outdoor enclosures including a hen house and an area for lizards and reptiles.

Spiders are the only creatures on her “no” list.

Elaine added: “I have been brushing up on different animals at the library and on the internet so I know a lot already. But if I get anything unusual or anything needing more expert care I will pass them on to a specialist group.”

She said both her partner, Ian Elwell, 38, and seven-year-old daughter, Stephanie, were supportive of her new venture.

Elaine is funding the sanctuary herself but with help from Wyre Forest Animal Sanctuary and Wilson’s Pet Centre in Kidderminster.

Thats a fab idea but how does she intend to keep them all fed and vet bills and cope with the waste disposal.
Large amounts of animals take alot of care and consideration for neighbours who will not want to smell the waste and suffer the noise if she allows to many occupants.

I am sure Elaine will find a way of meeting their requirements.
I think its wonderful what she is doing. Who cares what the neighbours think, at least someone cares about the animals, which is more than the majority of people. The cruelist animal in the world is a human being! Keep up the good work Elaine.

I think what Elaine is doing is wonderful. Who cares about the neighbours. Too much cruelty in this world. Pity more people didnt share her views. The cruelist animal in the world is a human being. Well done Elaine.

Jenny…if you have ever lived next door to a rescue centre as i have i assure you that your who care what the neighbours think attitude will not exist!
Every summer was revolting.Flies, stench of urine no matter how much they washed the units..noise of barking and howling till early mornings, bags of rotting dog poo and straw from the bedding kennels.
People who run this type of establishment should live out in the country with correct facilites to do so,not just to please neighbours but for the animals so they have free runs etc not on a housing estate or close proximity to to many people.
