Flowers will get 1966 medal
Monday 26th November 2007, 11:38AM GMT.
Wolves and England hero Ron Flowers will finally pick up a medal for his part in the 1966 World Cup winning squad.
The 73-year-old, who owns a sports shop in Wolverhampton, was a member of the squad but never played in the tournament. He will join 11 other forgotten heroes including Jimmy Greaves, Jimmy Armfield, Petter Bonetti and Norman Hunter, who all missed out on medals after England’s 4-2 victory over West Germany in the final.
Midfielder Flowers won 49 caps for his country and played more than 500 times for Wolves. He now runs Ron Flowers Sport in Queen Street with son Glen.
Sepp Blatter, president of Fifa, has promised to honour the “forgotten 11” within 12 months by handing out the same gold medals given to the 11 who actually played.
Flowers, who lives near Stafford, was unavailable for comment, but his wife Yvonne, 70, said: “He was surprised. When Ron was in the squad it was an honour to play for your country.”

wham boy,
why am i idiot, i am entitled to my opinion you fool, he was in the squad but didnt play one minute, so how did he help england to win the cup? its like you not going to work but demanding a pay cheque!

no marc, he turned up for work but the manager didn’t give him any jobs for the day.
He still deserves to get paid.

About time. Good on you Ron!

The night before the final Ron was very close to playing as Jackie Charlton was a big doubt. 49 caps for Ron, a true Wolves great, the medal is well deserved.

A squad mentality, a squad effort, a squad success. MArc clearly believes in individuals, not teams. Recent Wolves resurgence shows why he is wrong.

Well done Ron! I remember him serving me when my Dad paid for my first wolves kit.

Well done Ron, well deserved.
As for you Marc, it is a whole squad effort, who’s to say that he didn’t say something inspirational at training that carried players to win? (I heard a rumour about that)
