For a boisterous throng of music fans, it could have been the 1960s all over again as Liverpudlian rock’n’roll legends Gerry and the Pacemakers well and truly rocked the Wulfrun Hall in Wolverhampton last night.

After an hour-long warm up from The Complete Beatles, a tribute act with the look and sound of the real thing, Gerry Marsden and his band took to the stage to a huge roar from their adoring fans.

Fifty-something mothers became teenagers again, dancing in the aisles and joining in with classics such as Ferry Cross The Mersey and You’ll Never Walk Alone.

Fan Lisa Worthington, aged 52, of Great Bridge Road, Tipton, said: “It’s bands like this that make music to special to me – Gerry is absolutely fantastic. It’s the kind of music you can sing and dance to and I’ll always love it.”

Music eras may come and go, but for anyone believing the 1960s may well have had its day, this concert would have proved them wrong.

And what a performance from Gerry and his team – song after song was breathlessly belted out, the audience either dancing, singing or clapping to every tune.

Stunning renditions of Pacemaker favourites such as How Do You Do It, Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying and I Like It were all rewarded by the reaction of fans.

Fan Tom Stanier, aged 62, a painter from Cannock, said: “Music has always been a very big part of my life and it’s a pleasure to see the band play.

“I’ve seen them half a dozen times now over the years and I just think they are brilliant.”

Hazel Morrell, aged 55, a teacher from Cleobury Mortimer in Shropshire, said: “You can’t beat the sixties. It was probably the best music of all time.”

Sue Taylor from Warwickshire added: “Gerry & The Pacemakers can’t be compared to anyone else.

“They are distinctive and are fabulous to watch live.”
