Wolves star hopes for Scots call

collins.jpgWolves stopper Neill Collins hopes his match winning performance against Barnsley proves a point to Scotland manager Alex McLeish.

The defender headed a winning goal to ensure Wolves signed off before the international break with a crucial three points.

And he revealed afterwards that he’d been stung by the bitter disappointment of being left out of the Scotland B squad to face Ireland later this month.

The patriotic Scot feels he’s done more than enough to be in the frame.

“I had a point to prove because the Scotland B squad was announced on Friday and I wasn’t in it,” he said.

“I was very disappointed when I saw some of the names in it. Perhaps the best way to respond was to score and keep playing well – that is all I can do.

“Either that or get a move to Derby, because a lot of their players are in it.

“Seriously, all the other younger lads in the team are forcing their way into international recognition and I don’t want to be left behind. It’s up to me to prove the point by playing well.”

The disappointment was made worse for Collins because he is so patriotic.

“It is disappointing because I’m very patriotic. I go to watch all of the games – I’m a die hard Scot and it’s a wee bit sore when you see some of the players who are deciding to play for Scotland now,” he said.

“I don’t see international football as a career move – I want to play for Scotland, simple as that.

“If they qualify for Euro 2008 I’ll be there – if not playing then as a fan.”

Collins’ goal take him above strikers Jay Bothroyd and Andy Keogh in the scoring stakes this season.

“I love scoring goals. It doesn’t matter who scores the goals as long as we win in the end but it is a great feeling to score,” he said.

Move to Derby ? Glad to see you aint bitter mate.

Do you think you will hang on to him if you don’t go up in may – sounds like his international aspirations may be a problem ?

We obviously had similar issues this summer – this is what happens when good players don’t acheive.

Happy, problem was your players with bigger aspirations were actually “GOOD” players. Collins cant even get in the team in his natural position!

He only got in the team mid-way through last season and playing out of position this season, would like to know wht he thinks people have seen to get him a call up!?!?! he’s done ok but not great like!

as for the goal stats, then that is a bit poor, shows how well we do at set peices mind you but is a poor stat to the club strikers. If i was MM id be pinning that up infront of Keogh and the rest before the next game!

Dublin 7 – so do you think your GOOD players will be hanging around for another season of Championship football – or do you think Kites. Ollys-pyjamas etc will be looking to the prem too ?

We all want to think our players are loyal and “love” the club.. but lets be honest – if you fail this year then some of your lads will be off.

Collins is not the first to point out that players don’t get int’ recognition at the wolves (McIndoe) and so the pressure is definately on this season. Good job you all trust Mick.

you got to think bad enough he beating jay bothroyd but jay only started about 6-7games

keogh has already totalled up around 15games

that is very poor, i said it after 1st week season

if we are truly aiming for automatic we need to drop him or play 3 up front

No 6 – He isn’t rubbish. He does a good job in what isn’t his natural position and plays his heart out for the team. You only have to watch his reaction to scoring to see how much it means to him.

Hats off to Neil Collins, he really has done a fantastic job as a makeshift left back. No whinging or moaning just knuckled down and got on with it! His two goals have got us 6 poitns this season and in both games he kept a clean sheet as well. Fair play to the bloke, a real grafter is a rarity in this day and age of jumped up little prima donnas!

we have an attacking midfielder in seyi – but unfortunately he is being asked to help out with the defence – which in turn is leaving a massive gap behind the strikers – that in turn as lead to us punting a long ball up field into the corners for the strikers to chase and so pull them out of position

Maybe Eastwood, Hennessey, Keogh, Potter, Elliott, Foley, Olofinjana, Kightly, Mulgrew and Gleeson might not agree with this statement?

Whatever the reasons for McIndoe leaving no-one believes that it was because he really thought he’d have a better chance of playing for Scotland if he moved to Bristol City. Except you apparently.
