Frustrated Mick McCarthy has called for a “culture change” among Wolves fans as he confronts the dreaded ‘Molineux factor’ head on.

Wolves notched a nervy win against Barnsley but McCarthy was concerned that a significant minority in the Molineux crowd briefly turned on the team as they tried to kill off the game.

He believes the frustrations of the fans spilled onto the pitch and nearly cost Wolves a much needed three points.

Now he is calling for Wolves fans to shed their image as difficult to please and replicate the support they showed the team last season.

“Is there a chance to change the whole culture of every single football club? I don’t think so,” he said.

“But I’m just asking for it here, because the players don’t half put a shift in, everybody should be proud of them and I know the fans appreciate it.”

“But I’m just asking for it here, because the players don’t half put a shift in, everybody should be proud of them and I know the fans appreciate it.

“At the end of the game it could have gone pear shaped and a bit of noise in a positive manner could have helped us.

“We’re not going to play well all the time but sometimes we need that support and encouragement when the game is on rather than frustration.

“I don’t know how you change that mentality but if, when we got a corner, we’re raising the roof with ‘Hi Ho Wolverhampton’ it might be a lot easier than frustration.”

Vice captain Karl Henry felt Wolves should be praised for becoming more ruthless. He feels the Molineux men had to learn how to close out matches after last season. “Everyone could sense the frustration around the place. We should have been two, three or four nil up by the end but it wasn’t to be.

“It is difficult for us to cope with. We know our supporters are as passionate as any supporters in the country – they want us to score goals and attack but we have maybe been a bit too end-to-end at times.”

I was at the match, sitting pitch side, with young children nearby, and too be honest the only negative aspect they picked up on was Big Mick and his childish response to the crowd!! Foul mouthed and agressive body language on numerous occassions, great example, best way to show the fans how to re-act? Not!

I think as manager of the club he should maybe lead by example, no point in crying about the fans if he can’t control his own emotions.

After all, he has all week with the team, the fans have only match days. Maybe more time spent managing your emotions Mick, after all there is enough happening on the pitch to keep your eyes on, or is that becoming too much of a challenge for you?

Team played well, did not look as if they would concede, Darren Ward spent most of the day stopping the opposition with his head, and using his head well when they needed to pass out of defense, was well supported by Craddock, Collins & Foley they look like a combination that will get stronger and stronger, stick with it, and do your job Mick, its the fans job to provide feedback on a saturday!

Sadly, it will not always be positive, but by staying positive yourself there is some hope, by re-acting you provide them with the response they want, rise above it and rise up the table and you may just find it disappears to a large degree, but it will always be there, just like dodgy offsides, questionable penalties and players in the treatment room.

I think MM showed some real B**LS to have a go at the crowd, and I for one have even more respect for him now. I totally agree with him and a change in the fans approach to the run of play is needed. After all we were winning 1-0 and we some of the fans still moaned. I no people will say ‘I pay my money I’m allowed to have a go’, or words to that effect. But and the end of the day want is going to help the team more booing, moaning etc. or a good sing of ‘we are wolves’ or ‘hi – ho Wolverhampton’, if you were playing what would you prefer to hear? I Know what would lift me more.

A lot of the fans react to what they believe to be poor team selection and dodgy subs [well documented in these columns] and during the game they see that maybe they are right in their critisisms, alot of their anger is then directed at the manager Not the players. They wonder if the manager is watching the same game as they are.I feel sorry for the players who he selects who are obviously not good enough, they sometimes get the stick when it should be the person responsible for putting them on the pitch.Sometimes it pays to listen Mick but somehow I dont think you will!

I for one have never booed at a game – it never helps BUT – come on Mick, do not make a rod for your own back by criticizing fans who are not stupid. Lets get things in perspective here – if it hadn’t been for the intervention of the lady linesperson, we would have been talking yet again about another game where we dominated but drew the game. We can’t keep doing that – yes, we should have beaten Watford – yes we should have beaten Bristol City, yes we should have beaten Sheffield United, yes we should have beaten Southampton and so on…..trouble is we didn’t! All for the same reasons – lack of clinical final ball or poor finishing, coupled with a tendency to give it away defensively towards the end of the game – and we nearly did it all over again on saturday! So come on Mick – understand the fans frustrations for what they are. The backing has been there since you started and is still there, but you risk losing the fans by these types of outburst. Dave Jones used to blame the fans regularly for the team’s shortcomings………….

Cant agree that players are fragile – what are we dealing with here – pampered poodles?
Professional means exactly that – these lads/ men should be busting a gut to play a sport they get well paid to play

MM stated that he feels frustrated, the players are frustrated and the fans are frustrated – WELL Isnt the best answer to shut up the small minority of boo boys to simply go out there and show everyone what they are made of?

The problems on the field of play are with the players and tactics
We cant finish off teams and cant score more than one goal in most games – yet last season we created oodles of chances but could not put them away – So its now the fans fault? A few boo boys who should know better catch the attention of MM and theres the answer – the fans putting pressure on the players!!! For goodness sake – Old Chestnut MM

Tactics are far too predictable – we go out and huff and puff for twenty minutes or so and then maybe score 1 goal – Second half run out of steam and ideas as Kites has nothing left to give – What about the other 10 players in the same team MM?

If we are to use wingers why not use TWO of them – wide Right And Left – Give the opposition a torrid time and spray their box with crosses and passes from BOTH wings – making our strikers get in and scrap it out with their defence? No team likes it up em!!!

Try something different MM – Use your players better than you are – or get rid of them!!!

The thing that de energises/ demoralises players is the fact that they see all their running around like headless chickens count for nothing when the other team get the ball and equalise
Work rate is great if you can put the ball in the back of the net more times than the opposition can – Look at what Ipswich did to Bristol City – maybe MM should show the players a video of the game and they can learn something from it!!!

Dont agree with Boo Boys BUT a small minority shouldnt be used as an excuse by MM – Whos next Moxey with his tuppence worth about fans pressure?

Get a grip MM – Pressures on and you need to come up with fresh ideas and results to show it

We got 3 points Staurday Well done NEXT!!!

Dont use the fans as an excuse!!!

    UP THE WOLVES!!!

At the end of the day, everyone is entitled to an opinion whether you pay and watch a game or listen to your club on the radio. If the fans want to express their views, whether it be positive or negative then they can, and if the negatives provail then it is obviously the overiding consensus from the crowd.

As fans we want the the best for our club, we want to see the premiership again, watching big teams at molineux and Wolves succeeding as they deserve too. But to keep hearing the same old story “Wolves dominated but couldnt finish the game off” is not a good shift, and the pride and passion of the wolves fans simply express their frustration.

It was 3 points. it wasn’t entertaining and we (the fans) got nervous – probably stems from seeing too many games lost or drawn when we should have won easily over the years.

Once the game was over, most people were saying, “Oh well, its another three points” but its difficult to let the players know that at 5.00pm.

Unfortunately football is an emotional game, and occasionally we let these emotions go.

If we stuff a one-nil win every week until May, then we’ll all be chuffed to bits, but don’t expect fans to sing and cheer when they are watching a centre forward try to keep the ball in the corner.

And to all the people moaning about the moaners – I didn’t hear you singing and cheering much during the last 15 minutes on Saturday. The best way to drown out the moaners is to make yoursef heard more.

the reason for the anguish of the crowd in the dying minutes of the game saturday was the time wasting tactics that nearly got an equalising goal scored against us. to have a corner and then play the ball all the way back to our centre half who short passed it back to the goalkeeper who hit the ball against an attacker for the ball to loop skywards towards our goal, that was why we were anxious. do not blame the fans for the players supidity. we played well for the first 45mins and then ouch!!! shot ourselves in the foot and i;m sorry mm as the manager has to shoulder the responsibility for the players he picks and the way they play its always the mol faithful that get the blame. no more excuses do properly what you get paid to do!!!!!

Yes, we do lack quality, and that is why our approach play is not being reflected in more dominant wins. I was just as frustrated listening on the net in NY, to what appeared to be negative play in the last quarter. This type of display is inevitable as it is not possible to dominate for 90 mins. Confidence is important. If it was an infinate resource strikers would take all their chances and no one would ever have a bad game. That’s why some people in Wolvo support Liverpool, Man U, and Chelsea.

MM needs to realise the fans do get behind the team.We turn up every week to support them.
Perhaps if mm got his team selections right and had actually bought a striker who could score goals then we may kill teams off a bit earlier and hence the crowd being more positive with their support.
MM get’s paid a lot of money to do his job.Which should be to put out a team that play’s good football and has player’s who can score goals. Not just run round like headless chickens.
So MM if you had actually bought a decent striker in the summer and play our best player’s week in week out then you might find we play better and win more comfortably and then you will see wolves fans singing their hearts out. It’s the same at every club MM.Team plays well then the crowd respond positvely. Team play’s poor and struggle to beat lesser teams on regular occasions then you will get a negative reponse.

Wolves fans have always been the best in the country but there is an ever present small minority who will moan no matter how well we play. I wish they would stay away. But who took the decision to take the last two corners short and keep the ball there? This is not what we pay £20+ to see

It might be the fact that you win 1 0 instead of 2 or 3.A win is a win but look at Derby this season. They had the same 1 0 mentality similar to when we had Megson in charge if you cant score in this division youi got no chance should you get promoted.MM is playing the same way as when Sunderland got promoted, may get you out the division but no chance of survival and your fans can see this.

I think it’s a bad sign when a manager reacts in such a way to his own supporters!

I was at the match on saturday and Barnsley were a very poor team and we didn’t finish them off.

Plainly and simply,I think MM lost it altogether, maybe HE’S NOT UP FOR THE FIGHT?

The real problem with MM is that he only likes his own opinion and Wolves fans won’t stand for that, especially as we have a very intelligent set of supporters.

As a matter of fact I think MM wants to bring Potter back into the team and we want to know what’s wrong with Jarvis and what plans has he got for Mark Davies??

MM has got quite a few things
wrong. Also MM’s philosophy about hard work and football? well hard work without quality will win you absolutely NOTHING!!!

We will support you MM but if we disagree and you are to stubborn to change things then we will let you know.

Think it’s a bit rich Mick having ago at the fans, he was on there backs all game, fans were only replicating what his body language was portraying, I for one always support the team and never boo, but the frustration came from the fact that although everyone was working there socks off in the second half, once Bothroyd and Kightly departed we just ran out of ideas, wasn’t helped by Mick’s negative substitutions, why oh why when fit is Stephen Ward always selected, oh sorry I remember he puts in a good shift, pity he can’t put in a half decent cross. Not my usual policy to question the bosses selections but some of them are waring a bit thin.

    People

Not a swipe, just an observation.

If a foriegner, with no knowledge of the English game, read these pages
he could be forgiven for thinking
Wolves were struggling at the wrong end of the table.

    Yet againt despite victory,
negative undertones undermine the fact that you are doing well.

It pains me to say this, because i quite like Mick,
but i`m afraid he is the architect of much of the negativity.

He is crying wolf (no pun intended)
    too often,
it`s almost looking for the reasons
    before the event,
the Eastwood saga, the my players are tired from travelling nonsense,
and now urging fans to change,
    what tripe.

From what i understand Wolves should have been long gone in the first half,
then it got a bit tense late in the game, with a few audible groans at misplaced passess,
that is a natural reaction and it shows you CARE,
what does he want 25,000 clones who clap weather it`s good bad or indiferent?

    quality counts

MM gets what he deserves. It would be Kudo’s for a great team moving towards the premiership. We aren’t doing that at all.

Reason? we have a poorly run team with barely championship level players. What does he expect? The fans pay a lot of money and to a great extent we watch rubbish most weekends.

I think he has lost the plot. He doesn’t appear to know who to play, when to play them or which position they should be in. It always appears to be an unsettled side with players trying to play with each other but have no idea how to.

He is the point man. For sure we can continue with what we have but surely destined for another season planted in this division. Ipswich are the team destined to beat us into the top six I feel. The rest of the teams in the top six will be there at season end. Even if we scrape into the playoffs we just don’t have the team to pull this off. The Davy Jones team of a few years ago did have the talent, strength and ability to do it.

My fear is that even if Morgan opens up his check book in January MM will get more players to warm the bench and an even bigger selection problem.

I’m 50-50 on this one. There are a lot of so say fans (glory hunters)who need to be booted out but on the other hand sometimes passion overcomes you and you do vent your anger. What people need to remember as well is the fact that a lot of our players are young and could be affected by the boo’s. Do we really want to destroy the confidence of a lot of our younger players who’ve never had the burden of expectation like they have now? Bit of advice Mick, don’t p**s off the fans because that’s a quick way to destroy your credentials and the teams

Our results over the last 7 games have been good; (4 wins:2 draws:1 loss.) yielding 14 points out of a possible 21. We are in a good position to push for promotion. The points are more important than the performance. The fans need to get behind the team and lift them by raising the roof. Mick has a good record of building teams and achieving promotion. I think we are at an important stage in developing a Premiership team; the players need their confidence boosting by the fans. If they are wary of making mistakes and getting booed by the fans they will be inhibited on the pitch. They need to know the fans are behind them at all times.

This whole thing has been completely blown out of proportion. The fans were moaning and groaning because they’ve seen it all before at Mol. It was a funny game and the fans just wanted Wolves to keep the ball and maybe try and find the killer goal. Instead it was like the team shut down. I think Mick got the wrong end of the stick from the fans and his tactics to kill the game off were nearly costly. The smallest minority were booing, but most were just a bit frustrated and hoping the game would finish soon. The fans obviously weren’t trying to affect the players negatively, just get them to perk up. We haven’t got the players to hang on to a 1-nil lead and thats where Mick got it wrong. We should have kept pressing and kept the ball up in their third. Sitting back and letting Barnsley come at us was what we did and they could have punished us.

MM selected the players he wanted in the summer, got them well some of them dithering took care of the rest. Moxey promised us a treat. Some signings!!! Some treat!!! So what does January bring, I hope Morgan reads these pages because what MM targets is simply not good enough to get us outta this division. Saturdays performance allbeit a narrow win signifies this. We’re just not lethal enough. How many times have we said we should have 4 up at half time if not more yet we are at 0-0 or 1 up or 1 down. Not good enough, the whole squad needs to be re-vamped leaving just the core of the best players and bring in quality to supplement

There are some narrow minded posts on this.

If you don’t like the quality you are watching, don’t bother coming.

    Intelligent that.

The extra 3 or 4000 that are turning up to matches this season are contributing on average £100,000 to the clubs finances. Most of them will be former season ticket holders who were destroyed by the Hoddle era and are coming back because they thought that Wolves had turned the corner and hoped it would continue, and still hope it will continue.

Yes we are playing ugly football and yes we are in a good position but it was not just the newcomers who were moaning at the weekend but you could see the whole crowd getting frustrating by negative football and the inability to score goals or even shoot at goal.

i dont like to say anything about Tesco’s but they have their two main strikers out and still manage to score 4.

We all love the Wolves and we all want the best but the club.

I think the majority of you are missing the point. Responses like, “Everyone is entitled to their opinion” are invalid as Mick isn’t complaining about people’s opinions, he’s just pointing out that there is a time to express them. Fans showing frustration when we’re trying to see a game out is counter-productive – the players get anxious and panic when really they need to be concentrating 100% and perhaps looking to counter-attack. At ninety minutes do what you like.

… and will everyone please stop mentioning what shift you put in. The players ARE working hard on the pitch, so again it was a valid point from MM – don’t we all want a team who put in effort? If you’ve worked hard all week then fair played to you but let’s not forget, you do get paid for it. You can work as hard as you want and pay for a ticket for the game but football is football, just because you “put a shift in” it doesn’t mean that you can expect to see a victory – the opposing fans work hard too! The players get paid what the market allows and our manager is always talking about player’s workrate in interviews so you can clearly see that he is intent on the players working as hard as they can for their inflated wages.
