Gunman’s jail term appeal

Saturday 10th November 2007, 5:30PM GMT.

wd2184488marcus-bailey.jpgThe gunman who tried to shoot dead Wolverhampton community policeman Pc Geoff King has launched a bid to have his jail sentence slashed, it emerged today.

Marcus Bailey, aged 25, was jailed for life for shooting Pc King twice and leaving him for dead in the Penn Fields area of the city.

But he has now launched an appeal in an effort to win a reduction in the minimum 15-year term he was ordered to spend behind bars.

Bailey’s bid, which comes on the back of a failed prosecution attempt to get the sentence increased, was today criticised by Pc Paul Tonks, chairman of the West Midlands Police Federation.

He said: “He should be off the streets for life. Any time he’s allowed back onto the streets, I’ve got no doubt he will remain a constant threat to police officers.”

After he was convicted of attempted murder at a trial in June, prosecutors launched a bid to get his sentence increased which failed at an early stage.

Pc King, aged 33, and colleague Pc Karl Ansell a year ago tomorrow, when they spotted Bailey acting suspiciously. Pc King confronted the thug. He then fired three times – hitting him twice.

The Royal Courts of Justice in London confirmed an appeal on behalf of Bailey was under way, but no date has yet been set for a hearing.

If this succeeds then it really is time to give up! Hopefully the appeal will back-fire and the sentence will be doubled!!!!

Bloody do-gooders. It makes a mockery of the whole justice system. On what grounds is the system even considering his appeal.

The guy purposely went out to kill someone, yet there’s a possibility he may be out before 15 years! What the hell!

This country needs a deterrent. Bring back the electric chair for these low life scumbags.

Do they only expect Bailey to live for 15 yrs?Life should mean life not 15 years and in his case they should throw away the key.I hope ,if he is allowed to appeal that the costs involved will be from his own pocket and not the tax payers again. This is one of the reasons I now live abroad. The punishment should fit the crime but the do-gooders don`t allow this and you might as well take the “Great” out of Britain. abroad .Britains laws are .

Yet another example of the nanny state allowing a convicted felon to appeal and probably gain a reduction in sentencing.
How can the community expect the police force to act in our interest if this type of act goes on.
Life should mean life and not some arbitary time fixed by a law lord who is isolated from society and its needs of the punishment fitting the crime.

The weather is crap, the government is crap and even the justice is crap, no wonder everybody wants to leave Britain. As for the “Great” this country should be could “Great dump where scum can get out of jail for free”.

I also think Anthony is right this country’s justice system still sucks ass. Yet for this scum they are letting him appeal for trying to murder a cop. All i can say is WHERE’S THE JUSTICE in letting him appeal.

They allow scum like this to appeal. Thats the law, ITS the reason kids behave with such disrespect for the law. If his appeal is successful then it reinforces that it dosent matter what you do there will not be proper justice met. For a better England we MUST have enfoce laws.
