M&S to charge for bags

Tuesday 6th November 2007, 11:27AM GMT.

Marks & Spencer is to introduce a 5p charge for grocery bags in a bid to cut plastic waste, it was revealed today.

The decision follows successful trials in Northern Ireland, which resulted in a 66 per cent cut in the number of bags used by shoppers.

In January the charge will be extended to 33 stores in the South West of England, and is almost certainly to be rolled out across the whole of the country including the West Midlands – with other retailers set to follow suit.

For three weeks from January 13 customers will be given a free M&S Bag For Life with each food transaction. The 5p charge for standard food carrier bags will start on February 3.

    Good idea.

When can we start charging them for all of the useless plastic wrapped around the fruit and veg?

If they really tried hard enough stores could give eco-friendly bags away for free, but obviously that would hinder profits.

Once again the public are being conned, all in the light of trying to be green.

The customers have already paid for the bag, so you should not be charging extra.

I have noticed at my local store, that they started this method of bags for life. Very Good, but if it is contaminated with blood off the packed meat counter, it go`s into your bag, then you return it to use again. It does thaw through the package.

Now I see businesses as well as governments are starting to charge “Green Tax” with the income going straight in their pocket.

Ummm…..the supermarkets have to pay to get the bags in the first place.
If they can encourage people to reuse bags they cut costs anyway.
But they still have to go through a lot of bags.
So if they charge, you’ll either reuse bags or pay up.
Kwik save used to charge for bags for years, never heard any complaints.

THE PRICE OF PLASTIC HAS GONE UP!
This decision has little to do with saving the environment, it’s just the knock on effect of China & India’s huge & sudden increase in plastic & metal use.
