cig_and_beer.jpgA 100-year-old Cradley Heath pub has been forced to shut, with the landlord blaming the smoking ban as a reason for dwindling trade.

The Goldmine is now set to be demolished under plans for a care home.

Mark Walker fought plans to convert the pub into homes and the plans were thrown out in September.

However, he decided to close the pub last month as it was no longer profitable.

He said: “I think the smoking ban played a part.

“People are just not going out. They are mortgaged up to the hilt. I was paying a fortune on gas and electricity but it just wasn’t worth it as the takings were not good enough. I am sad. I don’t want to see it knocked down but what could I do?

“I have been talking to a lot of landlords and they are thinking of packing it up too.

“The rent pubs charge is sometimes around £100 a week on top of an initial bond which can be several thousand. There’s just not the turnover to justify this amount.”

People signed a petition to keep the pub open in July after the first homes plan was submitted. It used to be called The Blue Ball, and a brick on the site reveals it dates back to 1899.

Architect Donald Shearer, speaking on behalf of Brightwell Properties Ltd which is behind the care home scheme, said: “Everything we do has to be agreed by the Royal Institute of British Architects.”

Mr Shearer added the company always canvassed the community before any plans were put in but declined to reveal results.

So we were told there would be a rush of new non smoing drinkers beating a path to our pubs?
Interesting on a day when our own DoH announce they won’t making under 18′s buying an offence Because:
“Details were revealed this week in a letter from the DoH to councils. A DoH briefing paper says it is not appropriate to make it a crime to try to buy tobacco underage because unlike alcohol, “the harmful effects of tobacco are mainly on the individual smokers and it is, therefore, likely to be disproportionate to make buying a criminal offence”.

And theres me thinking SHS killed 800,000 people a year in Chipping Norton alone.

I used to drink in the Goldmine with my boyfriend. It was a really nice pub it’s a shame it has gone. I will now have to drink in the gate in Netherton which is also nice

Thanks to the new report we now know that alcohol and its fumes are carcinogenic, so I’m sure that the drinkers will not mind popping outside for 5 minutes while they have their drinks. Then they can come back inside and continue their conversations.

Is this really the world 98% (new government figures)of people want?

Yes but drinking beer doesnt make you stink like the back end of a midlands buss in rush hour!
Have some consideration for people who like a beer who dont want to have expensive perfume and clothes stinking to high heaven!
Besides…all you moaners…you smell much nicer when you dont stink of fag ash!

How wonderful it is now not to breath in second hand smoke. I can enjoy a pint without sneezing and coughing. I can watch the entertainment in club house clearly without a cloud of smoke looming over me. I can also take my kids on holiday into the club house and not have to worry about them contracting cancer. If you are desparate for a smoke, go outside. There is no excuse to say that this caused a pub to close.

The cost of drinking in pubs is so expensive compared to drinking at home that soon there will only be food pubs left anyway.
