Heathens rev up for comeback
Friday 2nd November 2007, 11:45AM GMT.
It has been 12 long years in the wilderness – but fans of the legendary Cradley Heathens speedway team will be hoping this week’s announcement of a new stadium site signals the first part of what would be an incredible comeback.
Supporters, backed by the cash of developer Tony Mole, hope to build a new ground for the team on green belt land off Oldnall Road, behind the Powerleague football complex between Cradley and Lye.
A planning application has been submitted to Dudley Council – and it will be backed with a near 10,000-name petition of support.
The team, one of the most decorated and well known names in the sport, was founded in 1947 and, apart from a spell in the 1950s, operated through to 1995 at Dudley Wood.
Names like Alan Hunt, Ivor Brown, Harry Bastable and Bernie Persson were as famous in the Black Country as Bobby Charlton, George Best and Denis Law in Manchester and regularly turned up as guests of honour at community events and schools.
But the club’s on-track fortunes changed in 1977 when Derek Pugh and Dan McCormick took over the reins at Dudley Wood and invested heavily in team building.
A string of domestic honours flowed. Two league championships, eight knock-out cups, three league cups and six premierships turned the once unfashionable side into the most respected speedway outfit in the country. But Dudley Wood stadium saw its last speedway race in October 1995, as the stadium owners reached an agreement to sell it to Barratts for housing.
After a hard-fought campaign against the sell-off featuring thousands of people against the plan, the developers finally persuaded an inspector to grant outline permission at the sixth attempt in 2002.
Following the loss of the stadium, the promoters took the team to Chesterton stadium in the Potteries for the 1996 season, but the 100-mile round trip for midweek meetings proved too much for many. Since then, Cradley Raise Aid Saving Heathens (CRASH) has worked constantly behind the scenes to identify more than 40 possible sites for a new stadium.
Now, after a £14,000 consultants search funded out of their own pockets, they stand on the brink of an historic and long-awaited return.

This is fantastic news for all speedway fans throughout the world not just cradley fans!
The return of the heathens has been long overdue and let’s hope that Dudley council stick by their words of support and grant planning permission so the heathens can return to the track and give this sport starved area something to be proud of!

Fantastic news. Unfortunately a generation of local kids probably don’t know what speedway is about but I am sure Cradley will receive massive support if and when it re-opens.

Oh yes it sounds great but what about the local residents who will have to put up with noise every weekend (and some midweek events)during the spring & summer, the increased parking, smell, litter, loss of more green belt land.
Get real, think about the people it will affect and not those who will just travel in to watch the speedway thinking this is nice but glad its not in their back yard.
Find a brownfield site, there are plenty of disused factories, try the former Sid Griffith site off the Stourbridge Road in Lye, there is better road access, and a derelict site waiting for redevelopment.

Paul – You have the same misconceptions as a number of people. There are plans to help ‘deaden’ the noise. Parking would be on site. The smell…are you for real?! Not as bad as the smell made 24/7 by passing traffic, and the bikes run on methanol which is cleaner and safer than petrol. Never seen litter outside a speedway stadium in all my life. There already sports on green belt. I’d love to have speedway in my back yard. I’d save a fortune on travelling. This site was identified by way of an independent professional site search.

Parking should be on-site according to the plans, so no problems.

I Feel it will bring life back to the Cradley area and also when it was at Dudley Wood there was no moaning about noise. My partner lived on saltwells and the gentle hum from the motorcycles on a saturday night and also in the week was a much loved part of her childhood. Come on Cradley !!

I am sorry but this location is totally out of character and dangerous for this application. I am not against speedway but only in the correct location and this is not it. Ancient flints, green belt and most important residents come first. No No No.

Dangerous? Could you expand on that please Kenneth? Thanks.

This is fantastic news. The best chance so far to bring back the famous Heathens. No other team can compete with the fan base the Heathens have, let alone had. I understand the locals concerns, they should listen to the facts and reason, not jump on the bandwagon of ill informed mumbo jumbo (the bikes run on methanol, a bio clean fuel). We are friendly fans of a family orientated well mannered sport. Ommer um Cradley.

i cant see how speedway would be any worse to ancient flints than the years of plouging or kids riding moto x bikes on the site.I think that that it should return to this site after all its only a strip of land that is being abused by a few idiots and could be used by a well organised group to provide enjoyment to a lot more people and i dont think it would cause a lot of disruption to the local residents me included
