Wulfs bitten by Bewdley

Tuesday 30th October 2007, 3:00PM GMT.

Wulfs, sponsored by DMW Environmental Safety Ltd, travelled to Bewdley Town hoping to make amends for the 3 – 1 home defeat against the same opponents two months earlier.

Pre match talk was all about how in big games you have to make your first challenge count. The first challenge of this game came thirty seconds in and up with Rob Hubball suffering severe ankle ligament damage and having to be replaced by Liam Evans.

Wulfs shook off this setback and set about taking the game to Bewdley. With just eight minutes on the clock Simon Hardle played a superb curling pass in behind the defence and Ricky Anslow ran through only to see his shot blocked by the legs of advancing keeper Tom Harper.

Another chance followed six minutes later when Simon Hardle delivered a corner from the left and James Skedgel rose unchallenged but didn’t connect cleanly with his header and keeper Harper was able to collect easily.

Another good chance came in the 20th minute when a long ball forward saw Ricky Anslow hassle his marker before carrying the ball across the edge of the area and laying a square pass to Chip Southern whose shot from twelve yards was again saved by the keeper’s feet.

Wulfs continued to make all of the play and created their best chance yet in the 26th minute. Andy Mitchell slid a lovely ball down the left wing for Fraser Houston to square a pass across goal which had Ricky Anslow millimetres away from forcing home at the far post.

Bewdley showed signs of getting into the game in the five minutes leading up to half time. Firstly Richard Burgess made a nuisance of himself on the edge of the Wulfs area before hitting a fierce shot which was well pushed out by keeper Tim Tipton.

Then, in first half injury time, the ball was well worked down the left flank before being cut back for Mike Carter to hit a low drive which Tim Tipton gathered well.

The second half began well for Wulfs again as they dominated possession but they found clear cut chances much harder to come by.

In the 62nd minute, for all Wulfs possession, Bewdley took and undeserved lead. A long ball forward was chased down by Richard Burgess and he muscled past his marker before hitting a low shot that Tim Tipton blocked but Chris Hough was on hand to drill the rebound into the roof of the net.

Wulfs gave it their all in the final half hour but couldn’t penetrate the Bewdley back line. Indeed it was Bewdley who went closest to adding to the score when Chris Hough fired a shot over the bar.

All in all, a disappointing result for Wulfs from a game that they had dominated for the most part.
