Couple banned over pet neglect

wd2399884rspca-16-dh.jpgA mother and her partner have been banned from keeping animals for three years and ordered to pay £2,500 in fines and costs after being found guilty of neglecting their boxer dogs.

Lisa Churchill, aged 29, and Daniel Flemings, 31, of Bassett Road, Wednesbury, had denied three separate charges of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal but were convicted at trial yesterday.

They were charged after their two dogs were found to be seriously underweight, infested with mites, and housed in a cramped kennel.

The RSPCA’s Inspector Pamela O’Neill told magistrates in West Bromwich that she had visited their home on the Friar Park estate in March, and had been concerned by the state of four-year-old Naz and nine-year-old Tyler.

She said both animals were so emaciated that their ribs were clearly visible, and that they were suffering from protruding growths near their tails.

Miss O’Neill added that the back garden was littered with rubbish and dog faeces. The dogs were seized and inspected by a vet.

Mother-of-four Churchill told the court that she had been on antidepressants since the dogs were taken away. “I don’t think I caused them unnecessary suffering,” she said.

“I fed them, I loved them, they were my life.”

Magistrates banned Churchill and Flemings from keeping pets for three years and also fined them a joint total of £500, with £2,000 in total costs.

The RSPCA will rehome the dogs.

These people should be caged, but at least they have been fined and banned from keeping animals. But who will check that they don’t?

I agree with Jan, maybe they should have been treated in the same way as they kept their poor dog’s. Boxer’s are expensive dogs to buy & look after – i should know we’ve got one. How anyone could treat an animal in that way is awful.

A fine & ban is all good and well, but what punishment is it really? They’ll pay the fine off £1 a week for the next god know’s how many years & will they have regular checks to make sure they aren’t keeping any other pets????

I agree these people should be locked up and left like they leave their poor dogs. No dog is cheap to look after, especially a Boxer. If you do not have the money or time then don’t get them in the first place.
Another pathetic attempt at a status symbol.
    Throw away the key.

These people should have been sent to prison. We need to send out a clear message that animal abuse will not be tolerated!

Banned for 3 years? They are totally incapable of looking after animals for life!

These people should be locked in a kennel together and starved. I hope the dogs go to a good home and are treated with the love and care they deserve.
