Wyrley 7 Willenhall Town 7
Monday 15th October 2007, 11:30AM BST.
West Midlands Regional Women’s League – Div. 1 North Wyrley Ladies 7 Willenhall Town Ladies 7.
With Willenhall being top of the league and Wyrley in second place this was always going to be a good contest, Wyrley opened the scoring when April Phillips crossed the ball into the box and a Willenhall defender put into her own net but it wasn’t long before they made it equal.
Jade Ward then passed to Stacey Arnold who superbly chipped the keeper and then some great work from April Philips out on the wing crossed for Arnold to score again but then Willenhall stepped up a gear and before Wyrley knew what had hit them scored three goals taking them into the lead for the first time in the match.
Just before the half time whistle went Phillips brought the score level when her shot hit the back of the net.
The second half saw Wyrley on top for the first half an hour, Phillips passed to Arnold and Claire McHugh slotted home then a corner taken by Ward was met by Arnold to head home, another corner from Ward was then met by Phillips whose shot was cleared off the line only to be met by McHugh who once again netted the ball but Willenhall were far from finished and the last quarter of an hour put Wyrley under pressure.
All through the game the two Willenhall forwards were ripping their defence apart with their pace and skill on the ball and they showed no mercy when they scored three goals to draw level.
It was disappointing to lose a two goal lead in the first half and then a three in the second, the young Wyrley defenders must learn from this, as we are sure they will but to be fair to them there are not many who could cope with the Willenhall forwards who are class players and take some stopping.
Well done to both sides as it could have gone either way, it was a good game of football and remained all through a fair one.
Player of the match was April Phillips Next game – home (Burntwood FC’s ground, Rugeley Road, Burntwood) against Stafford Ladies FC – 2 PM kick off.
