Wulfs ground The Flyers
Friday 12th October 2007, 10:54AM BST.
Wulfs, sponsored by Pegasus Planning Group, faced a team with a very unusual record when they played host to Lye Town for the first time ever.
The Flyers, as Lye are known, had lost every home game but were unbeaten on their travels during the start of the 2007/08 season.
After a slow start Lye began to show that they weren’t going to sit back and defend and were awarded a penalty as early as the 7th minute after Mark Tipton’s challenge.
Mark Whitehouse assumed the responsibility but Tim Tipton, making his first start of the season, was equal to his effort and saved easily.
Wulfs first effort at goal came in the 16th minute when Andy Mitchell picked up a loose ball thirty-five yards out and carried forward before hitting a stinging drive that was tipped over the bar by Lye keeper Mark Garvey Mitchell went close again in the 24th minute.
This time he rose unchallenged to meet a Liam Evans corner but his header was well pushed to safety by the Lye keeper.
Wulfs were failing to get anything going against a doggedly determined Lye side but managed to take the lead one minute before the break.
Tim Tipton produced a trademark long free kick for the forwards to run on to.
Ricky Anslow was quickest off the mark and he ran through to score at the second attempt after his first shot had been blocked by the keeper’s legs.
Wulfs then set out to double their advantage before the half time interval when Chip Southern drove in to the penalty area and seemed to be tripped.
The referee, however, saw it differently and booked Southern for diving.
After a lethargic first half Wulfs hoped to get out of the blocks quickly at the start of the second half but again they started sluggishly and it was Lye who went closest in the opening quarter of an hour when Mark Whitehouse cut inside and outside his man before driving a shot straight at goalkeeper Tim Tipton.
The same player went close in the 62nd minute when he picked up possession following a Wulfs corner and ran half the length of the field before hitting a dipping shot that Tim Tipton had to tip over the bar.
Tipton was called into action again shortly after when a mis-hit cross threatened to drop just under his crossbar but again he was on hand to tip over.
Steve Rich and Oli Meanley were introduced in to the proceedings in the 72nd minute and this perked Wulfs up to the extent that they scored a killer second goal eight minutes later.
Stewart Mason’s long ball forward seemed to be harmless but while the defender dallied, Ricky Anslow nipped in and chipped the keeper for his second.
Lye almost responded immediately as Jim Darby set up substitute Marvin Marius for a shot that skimmed the outside of the post.
Wulfs hit back again and Steve Rich’s enterprising play twice created chances in the last six minutes, first when his cross was volleyed wide by Chip Southern and another cross that was headed over by Ricky Anslow.
