Cannock title tilt suffers blow
Thursday 11th October 2007, 9:50AM BST.
Cannock’s title tilt suffered a blow as they were beaten for the first time this season at Beeston.
Penalty corners from Richard Stamp and Andrew Dixon helped the high-flying Yorkshire side to a win after Andrew Langlands had equalised for the title chasers.
It ended Cannock’s unbeaten run and saw them drop to fourth in the embryonic league table.
In National North Stourport had a mixed weekend – losing to table-topping Birmingham University before beating Barford Tigers in their double header.
Goals from James Carter and Nick Latham consigned Stourport to a 2-0 defeat in their Saturday game at the University.
But a quickfire double from Phil Lashford gave them a 4-3 win in a topsy turvy clash with Barford. Mandeep Johal gave visitors Barford the lead before Rob Allen and David Devey helped Stourport hit back.
Jasmeen Notay and Jereon Sibia appeared to have left Stourport reeling before Lashford scored two goals within a minute to clinch the win.
Meanwhile, in the Midlands Premier Division Bridgnorth’s disappointing start to the season continued with a 3-1 defeat against North Stafford.
A Bruno Mustone goal couldn’t stop them from crashing to their second defeat of the season. Walsall notched their first win of the season in Midlands One thanks to an Adam Thackray double.
He scored two to help Walsall beat Burton 4-2, with David Kinsey and Barry Guest also on the scoresheet.
In the West Midlands Premier Finchfield continued their strong start to the season by beating the University of Warwick 2-1in a tightly contested match.
Craig McGarry and Justin Wilday helped Finches recover from an early penalty stroke that had given the students the lead.
Kidderminster maintained their perfect start to the season with a 3-2 win over sloppy Wolverhampton.
Tom Schubert and Chris Jones had given Wolverhampton the lead but visitors Kidderminster mounted a strong comeback to snatch the points.
Old Wulfrunians were the biggest winners of the day as they crushed Wednesbury 5-1 to notch their first win of the season.
They made a perfect start with Neil Dillon and captain Tom Pickersgill netted two in three minutes to give them a boost.
Further goals from Pickersgill, Daryl Ablard and Matt Cartwright banished memories of last week, when they let a three goal lead slip.
In West Midlands One Old Halesonians made it two wins out of two with a 1-0 win over Old Sills. The win – courtesy of Andy Cole’s goal – was much more comprehensive than the scoreline suggested.
