Cannock continued their perfect start to the season with back-to-back wins over the weekend – notching a first home victory and making progress in the Cup.
A thrilling 5-4 win over Havant continued Cannock’s 100 per cent record so far this season, with Simon Ramsden and Andy Brodgdon scoring to hand them a 2-1 half-time lead.
Cannock looked to have taken a decisive lead thanks to a Ramsden penalty corner, a strike from captain Michael Johnson and the second league goal in two games for Cannock new boy, Gareth Andrew.
But Havant – who mounted a great comeback against Beeston last week – scored three times in 14 minutes to give Cannock a late scare.
They capped a fine weekend when they defeated Leek 6-1 in the English Hockey Cup to progress to the third round.
Cannock made a good start thanks to a Ramsden penalty corner but found life tough against the hard-working National North side, who equalised thanks to a breakaway.
Another Ramsden penalty corner made it 2-1 at the break but Cannock were failing to get out of first gear against a very hard working Leek side.
New signing Stuart Pilgrim scored his first goal shortly after the break before Simon Ramsden completed a hat-trick of penalty corners four minutes later, the score line looked significantly better for the home side.
Paul Blake and Harry Jawanda scored goals to give the scoreline a healthy gloss.
Meanwhile, National North outfit Stourport crashed out of the Cup with a 5-1 defeat to Doncaster.
Wolverhampton made the perfect start to life in the West Midlands Premier by defeating Redditch 5-2.
Dogged Redditch made them work hard, but two goals each from Tom Schubert and man of the match Kaval Jabbal – along with a Chris Jones strike – saw them home.
Finchfield and Old Wulfs shared six goals in the same division with a 3-3 draw.
Old Wulfs were three up at half-time thanks to goals from Richard Saunders, Tom Pickersgill and Neil Dillon – but Finchfield mounted a fightback in the second half.
They had two goals from Luke Piper and a Darren Holyhead strike to thank for getting a draw.
There was last minute drama when goalkeeper John Ashworth gave away a penalty but then redeemed himself by saving it.
