Time to map out a plan for Villa's future

Wulfs crash out of Vase
Tuesday 2nd October 2007, 1:19PM BST.
Wulfs hopes of making progression in their first ever excursion in the FA Vase came to a shuddering halt after a dour first half display left them with too much to do.
Cadbury opened up much the better of the two teams and took a deserved lead as early as the 9th minute.
Simon Williams picked up the ball out wide on the right and committed defenders towards him before curling a cross to the far post where midfielder Leon Mooney had made a good late run into the area to plant a header past the helpless Danny Tipton in the Wulfs goal.
Things got worse for Wulfs in the 18th minute as Cadbury doubled their advantage.
Nicky Playdon produced some good play out on the right wing before drilling in a cross that had Adam Ainge arching backwards to divert a header across goal and in to the far corner of the net.
It could have got worse still in the 27th minute when Ainge was millimetres away from converting a Daniel Bulmer left wing cross.
Wulfs had failed to string two passes together for most of the half but were offered a glimmer of hope just before half time when Dave Hayhurst showed good pace down the left wing before crossing low into the area where Andy Mitchell launched himself at the ball but succeeded only in connecting with the goalkeepers face.
At least the wing play had identified a way they could get at their opponents. The second half brought a change in formation for Wulfs and a change in attitude as they battled to find a way back into the game.
Twice in the opening couple of minutes of the half they produced good crosses that just eluded their intended targets.
Cadbury went close to killing the game in the 49th minute when Craig Vale played a long ball forward for Simon Williams to nip in around the back of the Wulfs defence but his shot was weak and straight at Danny Tipton.
Wulfs were working up a head of steam now and were almost gifted a way back into the game when a Cadbury defender sliced Robbie Hubball’s cross just past his own post and then James Skedgel headed over from the resulting corner.
The pressure continued when in the 58th minute Robbie Hubball burst through the home defence before hitting a cross shot that just eluded the outstretched leg of Dave Hayhurst at the far post.
Disaster almost struck for Wulfs in the 62nd minute when Danny Tipton was forced to make a smart save from Adam Ainge’s angled drive but things did get decidedly more difficult one minute later when Oli Meanley was dismissed for dissent.
Remarkably, this only made Wulfs more determined and they pulled a goal back in the 65th minute when Simon Hardle delivered a left wing corner and Myles Fenn powered a header home from close range.
Wulfs were now starting to take control of the game although Cadbury did go close when Danny Tipton was forced to push Adam Ainge’s shot over the bar.
The equaliser Wulfs craved nearly came in the 78th minute when Mark Tipton delivered a long free kick forward and a defender glanced a header just past his own post for a corner kick.
A Mark Tipton high hanging free kick caused confusion again five minutes later but Andy Mitchell’s downward header from close range was clutched by a startled goalkeeper right in front of his face on the goal line.
In the end it wasn’t to be for Wulfs and deservedly so after their first half display.
