Tividale 1 Wulfs 0
Tuesday 2nd October 2007, 10:14AM BST.
After two big victories in their last two games, Wulfs’ credentials were put to the test when they travelled to face a strong and well organised Tividale at The Beeches.
Wulfs started the game very brightly and should have taken the lead in the 3rd minute when a ball over the top of the defence had Steve Rich chasing through.
Tividale keeper Chris Gibson got to the ball first but his attempted clearance struck the Wulfs striker who then hit a snap shot wide with the goal at his mercy.
Tividale’s first attempt at goal came in the 11th minute when a ball into the area was headed clear to the edge where Nicky Dodds controlled before mis-hitting a weak shot to Danny Tipton in the Wulfs goal.
One minute later Wulfs went close again when Robbie Hubball’s right wing cross was met with a powerful Andy Mitchell header that went just over the angle of the goal.
Wulfs continued to have the better of the first half with Hubball and Chip Southern producing fine work down the flanks but the Tividale defence stood firm – as did the Wulfs defence when Tividale went forward.
The second half saw Wulfs getting the benefit of the slope and the slight breeze but again it was defences on top for the opening exchanges.
The breakthrough the game needed finally came in the 59th minute and came courtesy of a minor mistake and a moment of quality from the Tividale striker.
Wulfs lost possession just inside their own half and the ball was quickly shifted on to David Brown who searched for a bit of space across the edge of the penalty area before hitting a low shot into the bottom corner of the net.
Wulfs looked to hit straight back and went close in the 62nd minute when Andy Mitchell cut inside his man from the right before hitting a left foot shot that the keeper pushed to safety.
It looked as though Wulfs had found a way back into the game when Steve Rich flicked on a Chip Southern free kick and Andy Mitchell swept the ball home from close range but the big striker was just in an offside position.
Wulfs were giving their all to get back on level terms but were coming up against a very determined and well organised back line.
Chances were now limited and one of the few that came at the end of the game saw Mark Tipton foraging down the left wing before his cross was cleared to Liam Evans who hit a first time shot well over the bar.
Injury time bought a few comical moments as Wulfs keeper Danny Tipton thought he was Rene Higuita and made a couple of raids into opposition territory.
The first came after Luke Reynolds had been put through with a clear run at goal.
His attempted chip was intercepted easily by the keeper who then set off on a forty yard run up field before giving away possession.
The second came a minute later when he stormed forward for a free kick but it all came to nothing and Wulfs had lost the game.
