Prostitutes caught operating in some of Walsall’s most notorious red light districts are being warned they could risk an anti-social behaviour order.
Police have launched Operation Nominal to reduce the number of women soliciting the Caldmore, Palfrey, Alumwell and Pleck areas of the borough.
The crackdown follows complaints from residents about nuisance and distress caused by prostitutes congregating on the streets to tout for business.
Officers are issuing a leaflet to first time offenders which explains why they have been stopped, how they are affecting the community and the risks they are putting themselves at by soliciting.
If stopped again, they could be arrested and drug tested while police begin proceedings to obtain a civil injunction or an Asbo.
Sgt Gary Iliff, in charge of the operation, said the leaflet provides contact details of local organisations that vice girls can contact for help and support.
He added officers want to break the cycle of offending many girls find themselves in but would take measures such as civil injunctions and Asbos to stop them from re-offending.
Sgt Iliff said: “We are committed to reducing crime and making our communities feel safer and by working in conjunction with the local community and partner agencies we will combat this serious issue.”
People living near Tanners Court, Glebe Street, Caldmore, recently highlighted concerns about prostitutes operating in the area.

Too right as well.
In todays society with the free hand outs the local goverment give to people NO ONE has to be a prostitute.
They do by choice, there is no need to pity them.We all start out the same when life begins..what path you take is your chosen route.
Its a criminal offence..they dont deserve any special treatment.

Ummm…I disagree. With a £600 a night crack habit, just using benefit doesn’t really pay for much.
Last i looked, prostitution itself wasn’t illegal. Just the activities around it that were.
Maybe things have changed in the past couple of years.
Seriously, they are nice girls. Usually polite, pleasant, enjoy a cupp of coffee. Just they are more honest than most and charge more than most.
Oh, and wear more than some of the clubbers too. :)
Now what about the (usually guys) who use them?

It’s time to make this legal. Put them in government controlled brothels outside the towns and make them pay taxes like everyone else. It’s the 21st century for gods sake, grow up and get over it, if they want to be whores let ‘em just control it properly. We’ll never stop it so free up the police to do something useful!!

Well Martin you are obviously speaking from first hand experience so it’s difficult to argue with your in depth knowledge. However, our streets are dirty enough without putting more trash on them. Get them in doors where we don’t have to look at them I say, and make them pay tax like the rest of us.

3- Agree completely. Where there’s lust and greed (i.e. since the beginning of time), there’ll be prostitution.
Get them somewhere safe to do it, and make them declare their earnings.

Oh no, don’t let brothels be government controlled.
Government has no skill in running a business, and can’t help interfering.
Seriously, if people were serious about getting the prostitutes off the street then the government could do it. But there are so widely ranging ideas about that, there’s no common consensus.
Funny how few bother with prostitutes in pubs and clubs, only the expensive ones on the street corners……

Martin Davies said.,Now what about the guys who use them? Do you mean like the Yorkshire Ripper

Gaynor, you have onviously lived a very sheltered life or havent been researching… Some of these girls are underage, run away from home after being abused by their family, they are then taken in by ruthless, heartless pimps who act like they have their best interests at heart and then give them a free blow on crack, after they get them hooked they tell them to go out and earn the money for it!! – And no I dont knnow from first hand experience, I’ve worked in drug rehabilitation centres where ex-prostitutes have told me what happens. Some girls have even been exploited by their own parents!!.
This needs to be regulated and legalised, look at Scotland, its seems to be working fine there with “tolerance zones”. And like Martin said, prostitution is not illegal, but soliciting on the streets is. Gaynor, you need to get your facts right before you start casting aspertions on vulnerable folk.
If something so terrible had happened in your life, I wonder which path you would have taken?
