New Cross strike ballot

hospital-3.jpgAngry nurses at Wolverhampton’s New Cross Hospital who are being forced to take a pay cut of up to £3,000 a year were being balloted on strike action today.

Around 250 staff in the intensive care unit at the Wednesfield site will vote on whether to walk out during a two-week ballot.

If backed, the action could begin by the end of the month.

Officials at the Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals Trust say they are moving some nurses to lower paid grades because they were paid too much in error.

But staff claim trust bosses are reducing the numbers of workers on higher pay grades and expecting people to carry out the same job on a lower wage.

Officials at the Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals Trust say they are moving some nurses to lower paid grades because they were paid too much in error.

But staff claim trust bosses are reducing the numbers of workers on higher pay grades and expecting people to carry out the same job on a lower wage. One experienced nurse, who asked not to be named, said today: “I have worked for the NHS for many years and have never wanted to do anything else.

“I still love my job today but at the moment I cannot see any likelihood of attitudes and the working environment returning to a time when it was a delight to go to work.

“I am not an advocate of industrial action but if we don’t do something, the nursing hierarchy and management will continue to ride roughshod over a very vulnerable group of staff whose morale is at a particularly low ebb.”

Other nurses have also come forward to say they feel they are being backed into a corner.

They say the Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs New Cross, has created a 29-bed critical care department, which is a ‘highly complex and difficult project’ and needs skilled nurses from higher pay bands.

The strike threat has been condemned by senior Tettenhall Tory councillor Barry Findlay, who described it as ‘gravely concerning’.

Hospital bosses have assured patients there will be an intensive care unit operating in the event of industrial action.

Chief executive David Loughton said a review had decided around 100 staff were in the wrong pay bracket.

Some staff on low grades got pay increases. Staff last week voted unanimously for a ballot to decide on strike action.

They say they are being told to learn completely new specialities while at the same time taking pay cuts.

Absolute disgusting!!!!!! those so called managers who have been put in charge of this hospital should start to become accountable for there total incompetence. They receive large pay awards anf fat bonuses year on year yet the hospital goes from one financial problem to another it’s these who should have their pay cut SO LEAVE THE NURSES ALONE.

Having spent numerous nights in this hospital with all of my familly suffering from a range of long diagnosed problem and some short visits – it is clear to me that Florence Nightgale would hae been appalled at the squaller on the wards. Patients not assisted to eat or drink the slop that is reluctatly ‘served’ to them. Basic cleaniness ignored “it’s not my job I’m a graduate. Nursing is about care, feeling and emphathy for those less fortunate than themselves.
Stop gossipping in the offices or around the tea pot and CARE about your bedbound cares. One day you might be there!!!!

Dear Dave zeb think long and hard about whose responsibility the jobs you highlighted really belongs to. Are you now wanting to add waitress, domestic and other roles to nurses??? You very clearly have no idea what nursing IS about. Nurses are in the firing line for these deficits because they are visible. How many letters of complaint did you send in to domestic supervisors, hotel services and ward hostess services in all the hours you were sat on your backside criticising nurses for not doing what they`re not supposed to do in the first place? I guess NONE!! Open your eyes and look at the bigger picture. If it`s so bad, there`s always the Nuffield. You could even complain about nurses round the teapot if you want – director of nursing is the person you want.if you can be bothered to pick a pen up.!

I am currently a patient at New Cross Hospital.I have Breast Cancer.
The nurses at the Deans Centre,Radiology,Radiotherapy and all other departments that are involved in my care are superb. They are their emotionally for me and care for me with the upmost dignity at a time in my life when i am feeling very low, sick, tired and if im honest id like to just disappear and not have to look at the disfigurement of my surgery.
To expect a wage drop of 3 grand is appalling, they have morgages, families, loans…who makes up the short fall. They will leave nursing and retrain or go to the private network of nurses and then the NHS will struggle to fill vacancies because no one will want to work for anyone who doesnt reward them for their dedication and loyalty.

    Hi Dave Zeb

Thanks for your out dated view of nurses who are highly professional peolpe. Ha wendy wolf said nurses are not employed to serve the food of clear the plates but however we are threr to help feed the patients. the cleaning and domestic servicing ia not a nurses responsilility it is that of hotel services and managment. BUT in dept to help keep the unit clean we do cleaqr away and also damp dust to keep bacteria dow and YES this not part of my job discription. I work in the ITU and eve4ry day isw stressful, tiribg and hard work. If your a graduate like you say then you obviously dont know the training and skills that we have.
I have given 20 years to the NHS for very little reward noe I am Facing A £3.000 pay cut. I am a very de4dicated Nurse whom I believe Floence Nightingale would indeed be proud of./

I am a GRADUATEM with RGN, Specialist Intensive Care and acute nursing, teaching and management qualifications. and I believe that we do deserve our employers respect and support. Would you as a Graduare Dave Zeb bve able to loose £3000 in your pay?
