Five injured in car smash

Five people were taken to hospital today, some with serious injuries, after two cars collided in Wolverhampton.

A Mercedes Coupe is believed to have skidded on the busy A41 Wergs Road near the Harvester pub as it travelled towards the city.

It hit a Volkswagen Passat carrying four Polish people on their way to work in the opposite direction at around 6.30am.

Four ambulances raced to the scene and an off-duty paramedic who was passing by also stopped to help.

Four ambulances raced to the scene and an off-duty paramedic who was passing by also stopped to help.Fire crews had to cut free some of the occupants of the Volkswagen.

Martin Eaton, incident support officer for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said one side of the Volkswagen had been smashed in, trapping the front seat passenger. He said: “He suffered head and serious chest injuries. Working with fire crews he was freed from the wreckage. The driver of the car, another man, also suffered a head injury.

“There were two women in the rear of the car. The one on the passenger side suffered a head injury and the fourth person had suspected glass in her eyes and a fractured wrist.”

They were all taken to New Cross Hospital along with the driver of the Mercedes and his male passenger. The road was sealed off for two hours.
