Collapsed sewer chaos

roadworks.jpgRepairs on a public sewer which collapsed today are expected to cause traffic delays on busy Black Country roads over the weekend.

Diversions will be in place throughout Sunday as work takes place in Waterloo Street and at the Parkes’ Hall Road junction with Wrens Nest Road, Dudley.

The repairs follow the collapse of a length of public sewer in Waterloo Street today. At  Parkes’ Hall-Wrens Nest junction the carriageway has been damaged by recent stormy weather.

Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council transport spokesman Peter Vangeersdale said the aim was for both works to be completed during Sunday.

“Work will take place into the evening because we don’t want to disrupt people going to work or taking children to school on Monday morning,” he said.

“These are important roads and we have chosen to carry out the work on a Sunday because bus services are lighter then.

“We may have to continue overnight if necessary.”

Waterloo Street will be closed from 8am and traffic will be diverted using Holland Street, Swancote Road and Maughan Street.

Motorists are requested to approach Waterloo Street with extreme caution and not to park on Waterloo Street or Holland Street until all repairs have been completed.

The Parkes’ Hall-Wrens Nest junction will also be closed from 8am with temporary three-way traffic signals operating at the site.

“We have allowed ourselves until 7am the following morning, October 1, because we aren’t sure until we begin digging up the surface what we might find.

“The damage is in the sub-structure of the carriageway and a full reconstruction will be required.”

“Motorists are asked to approach the area with caution, and to bear in  mind that the successful completion of this work is necessary for the safety of all road users.”

He also warned that  Lawnswood Road, Wordsley, would be limited to one-way traffic the following Sunday, October 7, for resurfacing work to take place.
